How strong is the new epoch? Is it worth getting?

The Epoch is fine for questing (in fact, it's the only Epoch which is at all decent for questing). For bosses, it can be thought of as a sidegrade to the base Epoch, sacrificing long term power and damage for frontloaded burst. It's not as good as UWE or EE for bosses though.
