Zennistrad -> Should AQ have a player suggestion contest? (7/21/2021 22:19:02)

I've been fairly active in the suggestions subforum for a while now. I mostly post there because designing AQ equipment is a fun exercise in understanding the game's deeper mechanics and design principles, but one thing that's sort of struck me recently is that there hasn't been anything from there that's been implemented in a good while.

Now, I completely understand why that is — the devs are certainly very busy with weekly releases and the upcoming class revamps are no doubt taking up a huge portion of their time. But that said, I feel like there could be a way of re-introducing player suggestions back into the game in a way that's less intrusive to the schedule, and not far off from the "golden ticket" model that's currently used for player-designed items.

You've already read the thread title, so you probably know what it is: a player suggestions contest. This idea I believe was mentioned by The Hollow once during the announcement for the Devourer Saga quest revamps, and it's something that I would definitely like to see at some point: not just for the obvious reason that I'd love to see one of my own suggestions possibly make it in, but also because I'd love to see what other players can come up with on their own merits.

I'm wondering what anyone else would think of this: I personally think it'd be an excellent way of getting players to engage with the community outside of the usual wars and donation contests.

PD -> RE: Should AQ have a player suggestion contest? (7/21/2021 22:51:45)

I'd love for this to happen, time and budget within scope. Particularly I'd like updates that are purely for QoL, bugfixes, updates to older equips, and player suggestions that can fit within the time budget. Acknowledged that weekly updates are AQ's (and AE's in general) bread and butter, but maybe having 1 out of the 4 releases we get monthly being towards this end would be nice to have. I've been particularly vocal about gaping deficiencies in those areas. While not a "contest" in the purest sense, a small, focused, and dedicated update once a month towards those things can encourage players to pitch in on how to make the game better, and would be an easy way for the staff to incorporate player suggestions in the purest sense.

While we're on the clock for talking about the Staff's lack of time to do these things because of time and space, here's what our releases have been so far in 2021 (Going by Newsletters):

Anything that wasn't permanent content (AKA, no seasonal, no void rotation, Monthly GGB, contest, etc) is bolded. That leaves us with a total of 20/52. More than half of the releases this year have been dedicated towards things that aren't going to stay around. In particular it was dreadful that March and April this year saw NO PERMANENT CONTENT, two months straight of Seasonal + Rare Content.

And all 52 releases from last year:

Sep 28: Devourer Saga Update 11 & 12 + Mogloween 2020

October:
Oct 5: Paladin Finale

December:
Dec 7: Welcome Home
Dec 14: All Alone
Dec 21: Frostval 2020 Delivery War
Dec 28: New Years Rares

So about 24/52, or 46%. Seasonal Releases in 2020 accounted for 15 of the releases. GGB's 7. (Corrections are welcome as I could have very well skewed the statistics, or miscounted. Nonetheless I still think it paints a rather indicting picture of the state of AQ content releases this year and the previous one.) At this point of the year last year already had 14 releases of permanent content, versus 9 this year. Now I am aware the Summer Saga is still in continuation and continuing Necromancer Update are on their way, but as of right now this year is looking particularly bad.

Just for fun, I'll do 2019 as well:

January:
Jan 7: 250 Stat Upgrade

Aug 19: Burning Solstice IV - The Greatest Warrior II
Aug 26: Burning Solstice V - The Choice To Fall + Back To School Contest

Sept:
Sep 1: Burning Solstice VI - The Question
Sep 9: Rare Item Hunt
Sep 16: Talk like a Pirate Day 15th Anniversary
Sep 23: Burning Solstice - The Answer

24 / 52 releases were permanent content. If we exclude TerraZerker (because it's premium), then that number does down to 23 / 52 in 2019, or 44% of the releases.

EDIT: Adding onto this post to further track development in 2021.

Sapphire -> RE: Should AQ have a player suggestion contest? (8/2/2021 12:41:57)

PD's post is eye opening. I do think another sign is more and more the releases are after Thursday at 3pm more then not anymore.

The team might be smaller now, who knows. That also means if that's true, those who are there are working harder. So I think maybe some appreciation might be due, to be honest.

That said, I do feel as though if more content creation ideas came from the players, maybe the perception of releases by some who may view it as a downward trend may take a turn for the better.

I know many players have had, or have their own suggestion thread. I have one, too. While my ideas arn't likely taking a deep dive into making sure the ideas are balanced according to standards, I don't think it should rule the basic idea out, nor from others.

I do support some sort of player suggestion "event", or a few times per year the creation of ideas at least based on some of the suggestions. Maybe the player receives a free version, maybe it's a re-skin, or a MC bonus, or some other such "reward" for it being chosen.

I really think a player suggestion motivated release would be really fun, too.

I think that Golden Giftboxes might be the best way to do this.

While admittedly the idea of making player suggestion stuff premium content is something I'm a bit sour on, GGBs are already a guarunteed monthly release anyway and it seems to be where a large portion of the focus on new items is going, so working in stuff from the player suggestion subforum wouldn't necessarily take too much time away from what they're already doing.

Granted, this admittedly all depends on how far in advance they're planning monthly GGBs and I know nothing about how that works or what the development side of it involves

PD -> RE: Should AQ have a player suggestion contest? (8/13/2021 21:39:25)

In general, we do have the Cross-Game Extravaganza in Feburary that implements player suggested crossover items. That is usually the time of year when that kind of stuff is mostly implemented from the community. Also that maybe this year with the end of the Summer Contest we might have a chance to have community feedback on how the items may interact.

Also as a side note, I have updated my post from above about the state of the game. The track record of permanent content has not improved since I made that post originally. If anything the problem has gotten worse. However since that subject is not about this thread directly, I will go ahead and make my own thread about that subject on another day...
