I thought Shadows of War saga was hit-and-miss. Crazy Malgor is doing some stuff over here, and then next release he's doing some stuff over there. I think it would have helped if we learned little bits about Malgor throughout the whole saga, instead of learning basically everything during the fire plane war. The story and cutscenes in /ghostnexus were incredible. We're introduced to someone, and we learn about them and their struggles. It's just a simple character-driven narrative, and it works. The proof that it works is in the fire plane storyline too. In the middle of all the grand cosmic narratives, the most compelling part of the story is the humanity of Fiamme, Galanoth, and Elius. Although, I thought "Why Galanoth was chosen" would be a larger plot point, which would be the focus of its own cutscene with a great character moment for Galanoth. But instead, he just wonders about the question in multiple cutscenes, then says he may know the answer in another cutscene, and then explains the answer in a ! dialogue box. Dage & Nulgath could have been a big character moment too, but instead, it was another scene of "you know, i've been bad in the past, but I guess we should team up now, cause this Queen of Monsters Malgor dude is craaa-zaaay". A lot of the characters in the earlier parts of Shadows of War had no characterisation at all. Teja, the cat, Varga, Gar. The story even started poking fun at Gar for basically being an object, but that never went anywhere. Still waiting for his big redeeming character moment. & Varga just annoys me. Ontop of being a conceptual existence that has no characterisation, she has the power to just reach her hands into the story and do whatever she wants. But the story has never impacted her in any meaningful way. I feel like she could just kill Malgor by herself. I love the ultra fight as it is. It's basically a big boss with 2 adds that have progressive enrage timers; and the goal is to delay killing the fire orbs while you damage the boss as much as possible, and only kill each fire orb when their enrage is becoming too strong for the party to endure. This definitely requires a strategy, taunts, & consumables, and you should be forming parties with people in your guild discord groups to do it. Overall, I like what the story is setting up. The Avatars are more willing to interfere directly in Lore's affairs, but visiting Lore could destroy the planet, so they will probably recede their powers and take on a human form while in Lore. Having them as human characters that learn about Lore from the perspective of a human would be really great. I just wish that we learned who Malgor is at the start of this whole saga. Learning about a characters psychology before learning who they are is just a bit weird, and I don't think it really works. I think it just causes people to tune out.
