This is a long-standing known issue that unfortunately, has proven very difficult to figure out and solve. The only advice i can give right now is to make sure to unequip all house items before changing house styles, and to manually unequip before equipping house items.
As far as I can tell, this indicates there are no immediate plans to rework the homeowners' UI, and simpler fixes have been attempted to no avail.
