Arena at the Edge of Time: Never Apart

Hey there, heroes!

A new challenge board has appeared at the Inn at the Edge of Time! New challenges await in the Ties That Bind arena board!

For the first entry, we have an ancient DoomKnight and spirit...

[image]https://cms.battleon.com/DF/images/TIESTHATBIND1dn.png[/image]

Do you have what it takes to face Achilles, the Charnel, and Patroclus, the Stygian? Defeat both of them to earn a new helm and cosmetic cape! If you defeat the duo in a certain order, you'll even unlock a couple new DoomKnight customization pieces!

Head over to the Inn at the Edge of Time by clicking on the portal above Falconreach to test your skill!

Also this week, we have a pair of new Dragon Coin items available for sale!

First up, the Incandescent Fortune, a cosmetic weapon that shows its true colors when you enter battle!

Next, a new Catalyst for DoomKnight is available for 200 Dragon Coins!

This decidedly fleshy customization option was crafted by Darkon and Dracelix!

Also, some March seasonal items are returning, including Rainbow's Edge, Legion items, and the Thawsprout items!

Finally, some general update info!

  • The Lucky Day Storybook is now available to play through from the Book of Lore!
  • The Hero's Heart Day Storybook will be remaining until next week's release.
  • Fixed an issue where Valen's Cap did not have matching skin color on the ear.

More updates/bugfixes will be coming soon, once everything gets settled back down, including Bardpoch functionality!

And that's all for this week!

If AQW's month of evil is black and blue, DF's is blood red and black. Solos got a taste of doom on doom action, with variable degrees of winning. The man who became a Rider in a different universe doesn't really need too many out of box tactics, but the doom spirit can be a pain, especially if it possesses
    spoiler:

an AllRes-style Yalla barrier and a feature that was once a bug when simu-Uthuluc debuted, now turned into a lethal terror implement that you might need to snap the spooked out of their sleep.

EDIT: Perhaps Pat's AllRes barrier might be on the unreasonable side. Halving its efficacy to 10/hit instead of 20 should still provide some challenge without causing rotation shutdowns.

Have yet to thrash them in duo form, but that chibi is gnawing on my desires more than the helm. And finally, dmk receives two new looks, although I might not gun the duo-locked one depending on the demanded kill sequence.

It's not much right now, but is the tiny ball of fire at the distant sky on Falconreach's main room a cause for concern?

Oh god, don't tell me next story will involve a Meteor coming down on Lore?

I think that's called the sun. And don't worry, it's perfectly harmless as long as you don't count the droughts, heatstroke and skin cancer.

In all seriousness I'd be down for that. After all, having a Meteor blow up the continent succeeded in reviving/rebooting Final Fantasy 14. Though considering how often Falconreach gets destroyed and rebuilt I doubt most people would really notice a difference.

Dratomos -> RE: =DF= March 4th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: Never Apart (3/6/2022 5:52:10)

I wasn't a huge fan of the duo. Their difficulty is way too high for it to be manageable for other then Premium Classes.

I like the ideas. Meeting Ancient Doom Knights sounds great, and it seems this board will focus on the Doom Spirits we saw in Caitiff's flashbacks? So that is a great idea, Doom aesthetic has always been one of my favourites.

    spoiler:

But the difficulty. It's way too high, due to both monsters having way too many mechanics and a enrage mode after one is defeated. I get why the enrage mechanic is there and it fits with the duo. But maybe next time, there should be little less, as now they punish classes who:

    * use multi-hits
    * aren't capable of quickly defeating bosses
    * don't have access to amazing shields
    * rely on status effects

and Pat can even take out your pet. That is a great mechanic and I do wish to see it in the future.

Now I get that this mostly sounds like "Epoch -player complains that bosses hard", but I do try to use other classes as well, especially Non-SO's. Techno, Ranger, DeathKnight and DragonLord all have a lot of difficulty with this fight. And when the fights are too difficult, the enjoyment isn't really there anymore.

Allos -> RE: =DF= March 4th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: Never Apart (3/6/2022 6:22:18)

Ah, this Duo is so good! I'm usually not into Doomknight-y aesthethics but Achilles looks so good! Patroclus is such a cool design too! And they didn't have to be named after **THE** "roommates", but i'm so happy they were! Love getting lore like this, ah to be a Doom spirit in love with the angriest man to live...
Sadly i don't have access to Doomknight so i can't rock the new look, but big fan of it! Dracelix and Darkon are such a good duo.

As for the fight, Technomancer shines here with proper play, and i really liked doing the fight with techno! It kill Patroclus first too which is a nice flair. I feel like i'm not seeing people do Achilles first tho, and i think achilles first is supposed to be easier...? But it seems in practice that is not being the case. Something about Enraged Pat probably needs to change. (Also please let DeathKnight's Relic Barrier be an exception to Pat's Termination, kinda just kills the point of the class as is, and DK would be quite good here otherwise i hear)
Despite that i really did enjoy the fight, I like how Achilles works and Patroclus is pretty cool too enrage aside.
Really like the flair that these enrages add, wonder if thats gonna be a mainstay gimmick in this board? Honestly I dig that if so, I'm curious for next fights here.

AstralCodex -> RE: =DF= March 4th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: Never Apart (3/6/2022 23:17:37)

After doing it with a bunch of classes, I really liked the fight. I think it's definitely on the hard side and it has a lot of complexity, but it was quite enjoyable. Compared to last month's pre-nerf RnR, I think this fight is significantly better designed.

Techno is clearly the best non-premium class for this - the shield with Overclock lines up super well with everything the bosses are doing, while its high damage and low hitcount let you kill both before Achilles ramps too much. The key innovation here is to grind down Achilles to about half with your first rotation, then kill Patroclus, and then finally kill Achilles.

Also, the new Charnel custom looks amazing, and will be my default V2 look for a good while.

Vaalirus -> RE: =DF= March 4th Design Notes: Arena at the Edge of Time: Never Apart (3/11/2022 1:21:35)

Can't say I'm a fan of Deathknight's relic barrier being susceptible to Patroclus' termination mechanic especially in the duo fight, basically asking to be nuked regardless at the end of the spirit's rotation. Individually, this can be overcome to an extent by gear swapping (especially if you decided to burst him with on the edge at the start and heal your way back up when Patro's final attack is negated) just as the hit is about to come but oh boy does that get tossed out the window when Achilles enters the mix. Either way this was a deadly duo as they should be and I do like some of the other abilities displayed here.

Mechanics aside I like the lore implications to this one for a couple of reasons. For one, we now have confirmation that there were in fact other Doomknights beyond Sepulchure and while that may seem obvious given that it wouldn't have been far fetched for a doom spirit to have bounded themselves to some armor and then have some unfortunate soul wear that armor we haven't had any indication that there were more beings like Seppy out there in the Dragonfable's timeline (besides us non-canonically). Additionally, as anticipated in preview of this release, we now have apparently have witnessed another one of the more stronger doom spirits that were shown entering a portal in Caitiff's memories from the Madness quest (like The Whisper with Voyna). To clarify, Patroclus' form is most closest to the design of the Doom spirit that was between the mosquito head and the doom spirit that was closest to the portal. It has the three eyes to match, the horn atop it's head, the long hair, and of course the body cut up into rings at the end. Also, like the word play with them being titled the "Stygian" considering the Greek myth of Achilles had him be bathe the River Styx to gain his near invincible body and in a way you could say this Achilles bathed in darkness for strength as well. Furthermore, on the note Greek myth similarities, if we take their individual objective card completion texts at face value, as well as the origin of their namesakes, then it's good estimation that they're probably both been long dead at this point. A point of which I thought was strange at first considering we did eventually come across The Whisper and Voyna and they were just locked up somewhere by the Avatars. Of course I realized later that it's not out the question that when Kathool mentioned that the other doom spirits fell that it was using "fell" as an umbrella term for being defeated or at least failing to complete their plans which could mean either being imprisoned, killed, or forced to retreat.

Which begs the question: Who managed to put a stop to Patroclus and Achilles and furthermore what led to Achilles making a pact with Patroclus? Achilles' objective card states that he was torn by rage and grief before making the pact so we can assume that much like Voyna and Sepulchure he lost someone or multiple people close to him. One thing I did notice was that two of Achilles attacks are eerily similar to that of two attacks for the Dragonlord class. If these aren't simply reused animations then I wonder if this means he was at least once a dragon rider who lost his dragon companion.
