Primate Murder -> The Lore of Darkovia (10/3/2023 0:37:09)

Darkovia has long been an established and accepted presence in AQ. A subrace - or a lack of one - is a major choice for any player, and even casual players would recognize names like Vampire Hunter E, Nightwing, or Safiria. Recently, Lorekeeper has been sharing some very interesting lore on Darkovia on unofficial AQ Discord, and I wanted to gather it all in one place so that the knowledge is not lost among its fathomless depths. A centralized hub that players could refer to for lore and role-playing. These are the posts that captured my attention:quote:
There's no large scale farming in Darkovia. Smaller scale horticulture and nocturnal plants of a magical nature is the best that neighboring communities can do, causing a dependence on risky trade routes and all but creating a food desert. quote:
This was one of the more problematic aspects of the incorporation of Erebus into Darkovia and establishing the war as having started a millenium ago. Darkovia went from mysterious and dangerous to logistically unfeasible. These things were simply not considered, and no notes were left due to the lack of a lore or story guide. There hasn't been an opportunity to show this in game to a satisfactory extent, but the way I'm tackling this begins with the retcon of the thousand year war into a periodically reigniting conflict with stretches of recovery and mustering. Safiria's clan already had the infrastructure to support themselves, as it was an established fiefdom. She has recently hinted at a more peaceful vampire society of old which had a more favorable relationship with mortals. Patronage and protection paid in willingly given blood. This knowledge is in game already, but the extent to which this situation remains is not featured yet. However, it has clearly degraded. Some of her forces have gone as far as feeding upon any trespassers, and she doesn't hold them back. The werewolves were originally a proxy army of Drageth Slugwrath and Erebus, giving them some initial logistical support. They had resources and forward operating bases from what was once (And eventually regained the name of) the Drakath dynasty. Their current entrenched positions are dependent on what remains of these resources and holding on to territory with border access for sustainable expansion. quote:
Darkovia is also very much not a dead land. While large scale agriculture is dead, the event that plunged it into eternal night was an attempt at an elemental collapse and planar meld on a smaller scale. Although Erebus was thwarted, there was a change beyond simple environmental consequences. The dried vegetation is predominant in the borders between faction territories, closest to where the incident took place, but Darkovia is teeming with life and magic that can't be found elsewhere on Lore. Unfortunately, I'm not a dedicated used of Discord, so I wanted to ask the other players for help. What tidbits of Darkovian lore were shared that you'd like to preserve? Things that you found fascinating, that changed your perception of the land and its peoples? Please place your favorite segments here and share your love for the fallen realm!
