Book 3: Amityvale - Red Queen's Gambit (Part 1)
Hey there, heroes!

This week, we're returning to Book 3 Amityvale with a 2 part story written by Lorekeeper!

[image]https://cms.battleon.com/DF/images/2025-08-08-RedQueen1DN.png[/image]

Though a tentative peace has been negotiated between The Rose and the denizens of Doomwood, there are those for whom peace is not enough. A group of ex-Rose hunters threaten to reignite the conflict, and Magus Neron requests your aid to help quell the uprising.

Queen Safiria, too, is unwilling to let these hunters gain traction with their movement...

Head over to Book 3 Amityvale and speak to Thursday to play this week's quest: Red Queen's Gambit (Part 1)! Note: This quest requires completion of Book 3's main storyline.

Also this week, we have a new cosmetic weapon available for sale!

The fierce Dreadpiercer of Doom transforms its blade into a jagged piercer when clicked! You can obtain it from the DC Cosmetics shop for 400 Dragon Coins.

We also have a collection game balance changes and adjustments!
  • All DragonLords: Bite/Claw combo no longer resets if another skill is used in between.
  • Bulwark DragonLord:
    • eWings now increases the Patience passive by 5 stacks up from 3.
    • eIce changed to -70 Boost, from -50 Boost + amount based on missing HP%.
    • eDarkness duration changed to 15 turns, from 10 turn + amount based on Patience.
    • eEnergy effect duration increased to 4 turns, up from 3.
  • Wrath DragonLord:
    • Claw/Rampage Boost effect duration increased to 7 turns, up from 5.
    • Rampage animation changed to only play once, but with extra hits. (Animation change only)
    • eWings changed to 4 turns of -100 Avd/Def, requires the attack to hit to apply.
    • eWind changed to 3 turns of +50 Health from -180 Avd, requires the attack to hit to apply.
    • Wind changed to 15% heal, 9 CD, from 20% with 12 CD.
    • eLight effect duration increased to 7 turns up from 5.
    • Ice effect for Wrath (not Rage), increased to -70 Boost, up from -50.
    • eIce changed to +200% base damage if any DoT is purged, from +100% base damage per DoT purged.
  • Pirate's Cursed Treasure now adds +3 Plunder, up from +1, and cooldown has been reduced to 21, down from 24.
  • Ranger:
    • Attack damage reduced to 1x80%, down from 1x100%.
    • Viper's Arrow damage reduced to 1x25%, down from 1x50%.
    • Sky Assault damage reduced to 2x75%, down from 2x90%.
    • Recover now costs 80 MP.
    • Focus now increases crit damage by 20% per stack, down from 25%.
    • While these nerfs may not feel great at first impression, Ranger's strengths lay in its sustainability and quick, strong burst phases. Rather than change the mechanical aspect that is in a great place, these changes aim to make it more
    • challenging to sustain and burst while maintaining its gameplay style.
  • Ninja:
    • Blur CD up to 9, effect reduced to 90.
    • Furious Assault's cooldown now changes to 7, down from 14, when it transforms into Basilisk Venom under the effect of Catalytic Flow. (Cooldown returns to 14 when Catalytic Flow wears off)
    • Viper Venom now only goes on cooldown if the attack lands.

And that's all for this week!

I'll let the others be the judge for the revisions done to the non-BDL classes, but the additional modification to Pirate's Cursed Treasure is a minor but welcome one. I have already submitted a bug report on it, but it seems that BDL's eWings and eEnergy are still doing their old thing instead of the new hotness.

Paw printed, and tagged! ~Gingkage

Verlyrus -> RE: Friday, August 8th Design Notes: Book 3: Amityvale - Red Queen's Gambit (Part 1) (8/8/2025 20:05:46)

Note: for Bulwark DragonLord, the changes:

eWings now increases the Patience passive by 5 stacks up from 3.
eEnergy effect duration increased to 4 turns, up from 3.

were cut before release, sorry about the confusion!

Laeon val Observis -> RE: Friday, August 8th Design Notes: Book 3: Amityvale - Red Queen's Gambit (Part 1) (8/8/2025 20:16:18)

Interesting. At the least the retained updates for BDL are pretty logical. Updated the DNs thread by slashing the omitted updates instead of deletion.

BTW, didn't include it in the report, but the Book 3 Amityvale routing button in the Book of Lore is routing to Book 3 Falconreach instead. Either it is a routing fault, or Ash should've been provided something that is pertinent to the story update that he didn't receive.

EDIT: Routing fault already fixed.

Vaalirus -> RE: Friday, August 8th Design Notes: Book 3: Amityvale - Red Queen's Gambit (Part 1) (8/8/2025 21:52:41)

spoiler:

Suppose it shouldn't be a surprise that there are more vampires, even Safiria herself, who think the idea of us becoming a vampire ourselves is somewhat of a good one especially given how effective we've proven to be time and time again. But as pointed out by Safiria, this proposition would in all likelihood just end in disaster for their little regrowing kingdom, if not soon after we were turned then definitely sometime in the future after the fact. I'm also not even remotely surprised to hear that yet another rouge faction within the Rose is causing trouble for the innocent.

Flabagast -> RE: Friday, August 8th Design Notes: Book 3: Amityvale - Red Queen's Gambit (Part 1) (8/10/2025 7:51:30)

spoiler:

It makes sense that splinter factions within the Rose would start popping up now that Jaania and Akanthus are out of the picture. It wouldn't surprise me if these "Moonbane Hunters" aren't the only Rose members who are unhappy in the very recent change in leadership and ideals.

And I can't help but find it a little amusing how much more seriously the idea of the Hero becoming a vampire is taken in the context of the story, compared to how it works in Mechquest or Adventurequest. Mind you, unlike in AQ vampirism has no known cure, and in MQ it's only really an aesthetic thing, so it's nice to see the idea being considered in relation to Dragonfable's unique world-building.
