It took you an hour to get here. But from what you heard, it sounds worth it. A place to sit and discuss the ins and outs of the art community.

Upon arrival to the front do to the cafe, you notice a quaint sign with some rules:

1. Flaming/Swearing/and Spam is not allowed. No matter how small it is.
2. Topics will last one week (Start Saturday, Ends Saturday), unless the topic is dead (no replays in 24 hours). First person to post on that day can decide the topic of the week.
3. Do not add your signature to your post. Your post will be deleted.
4. Read the manual for anything else missed ( Gallery Rules, Universal AQ Rules)
.

After observing the sign, do decide to enter the cafe. Coffee and smoke hangs in the air, and you can hear soft music playing, but can't quite make it out. Paintings and photos dot the walls with tables and sofas under them. You can see people are in heated conversations, you try to read their lips, but the low lighting makes it difficult.

"This is my kind of place." you think to yourself. So you walk up the man behind a counter in the middle of the cafe.
"Welcome to the Black Rose Cafe. I'm Grafh. Have a cup and take a seat, and enjoy."

After taking the man's advice, you take a seat next to a small crowd in discussion.

Credit goes to Nicky (who started a thread like this), Loki (for the cafe idea), Randor the Red for the banner, and the Black Dog Cafe in Saint Paul, MN (one of my fav cafes).

New thread.

As per suggested, this is now a General Purpose Thread. Topics can be art related or anything else, so long as the topic does not break any rules of the Gallery or the AE Forums.

Yay 3rd post!

Which is better:

Composition or effects?

Edit: Can I change the topic? If so, any suggestions?

Ah, this will be so awesome! Thank you so much, Grafh! So, I'm going to start updating my thread again... I've been doing a couple moglin things today, so I'll show those. By the way, I won't be doing many big projects anymore. I can't really handle them with my time. So this brings me to a topic that some of you may want to reply to... (THIS IS AN OPTIONAL TOPIC; YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANSWER!)

How much time do you usually take in a day to hang around the Gallery and the whole Creative Arts forum?

On weekdays, I usually take up about 3 hours of my day, which is part of my art-making time, too. On weekends, it is indefinite and always all around the day.

lol tread you marched right over mustafa's topic. Ill answer both. I think effects is more important because to me compo is more advanced but getting your effects down as a beginning artist is more important than composition.

During the week i dont spend alot of time unless im off or something. On weekends I pop in periodically and browse. Probably 2-3 hours depending on how many requests/personal projects I have going on

Oh, I'm sorry about that; I had no idea. D:

I'll keep my topic optional. ;D

Anyways, topics don't really matter. We can pretty much discuss anything within the rules.

Now, with Externia back on it's feet, usually around 2+ Hours, mainly to comment on questions and such.

Personaly, i think Effects are better, mainly because effects usually stand out more.

Now for a question of me:
What system do you usually use to make a game? (Can be flash, RMXP, ect.)

feral__john, I don't really make games so I can't answer that.

Treadlight it's fine, as for your question:

Depends, on average an hour a day.

effects cant be "better" than composition, and vice versa.

Yeah! This will be great.

@Composition or effects - I like how something looks most. It can be the most novice piece ever, but if it looks the part i'd vote that over a pro piece. If effects can add to the overall composition, then even better.

@How much time - I'm here all the time. I'm always browsing even if i'm not commenting. My internet is going on a downgrade at the place i'm moving to, so i'll be here even more then (no internet games XD)

Also, i'm curious. Do you guys have a kind of 'art music playlist' that you listen to when drawing or whatever? Or different music for each piece you do? Or do you prefer to work in silence?

Personally, I just have all my music on shuffle all the time. It doesn't matter what I'm doing (well, unless i'm watching a movie or something =D)

Also, GO THREAD GO!

i'm on like althorne usually.

And for the art music thing, I find that it's more distracting to listen to music while making art, though it's awesome to have this really meaningful song in the background and then you show your best tag ever :P (Sounds corny I know)

For althorne's question:

For my gfx tags, I sometimes play music as it kinda inspires me.

Mustafa: Composition.... Knowing which things go together is important ^_^

Tread: Browsing always :D

Althorne: Magic Key- One T
I listen to it over and over and then mix it with some other different things(varies)
Though I sometimes pick out a certain track that fits what I'm doing and replace "magic key" with it xD

@Al: Okay, here are some things that I have been listening to, lately, when I make art:
  1. Kenny Phoenix (If you don't know this guy yet, he is an awesome musician who makes awesome metal and techno music. Wait, you guys already know him? D:)
  2. Mushroomhead
  3. 216
  4. Meshuggah
  5. Metallica
  6. Pantera
  7. Tool
Yeah, that's my list. I usually listen to [nu] metal, with Kenny as the only exception.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sure what Grafh had in mind, but I'm going to say that you can pretty much lay down any kind of conversation or anything. I wouldn't object to you having a link to your gallery or shop at the bottom of your post either to maybe get a few people so intrigued by your post they want to check out your gallery! :D. So yeah, try to give everyone's questions or discussions a fair go and make this thread work out ^_^.

Althorne: When I make stuff I usually just turn on the radio and listen to whatever's playing at the time. Popular songs sometimes get played so much while I'm doing something that I can relate it to what I was doing at the time, every time I hear it o_o.

I generally work in silence. Unless something is on the radio. I like hip hop/ R&B. I can get with jazz too.

Nicky, we can talk about whatever as long as we don't SPAM, flame etc. It's like the OOC in a thread. Or so I think.

Also, interesting. Have any of you done the whole painting to music thing. Such as, paint what the music means to you? I've always found this quite pointless...

tried, yes, succeded, no
I always get confused halfways through.... But this just shows that songs have loads of meanings depending on who listens to them....

I always find it pointless... It is never really what I actually want to draw/paint/animate, it is just an annoying obstacle. Meaning really isn't as strong as feeling is.

We had to do that in Art Althorne, and I being the prat I am chose Still Alive which lead to some amusing remarks from peers.

Yes, so long as it remains spam free and civilized.

I'm expecting everyone to behave themselves while posting here. This right can be removed just as quickly has it appeared.

Everything I listen to is dark and morbid, but not its goth or emo music. I draw inspiration from songs that are considered so evil, so demonic sounding, your parents will call an exorcist . The cursed atmosphere, the droning guitar riffs muddled with thick, heavy distortion, the agonized growls of a man possessed. What the average person would think is so hideous, I find tragically beautiful... What I hear, I try to give it embodiment in my work...
most of the time atleast =/

lol, I'm so over dramatic D:

Juno Reactor equals some pretty crazy spacescapes.

Usually I'll listen to something like Tool or Coheed and Cambria.

Cool sounding, but not too heavy.

I save that for the parties, lol.

.Fullmetal_Tmd, I kinda do what you do as well. Except I don't listen to dark and morbid stuff.
Music like Daft Punk, Kanye West, Linkin Park and Red Hot Chili Peppers is good.
