Photography versus Photo-manipulation

Which do you like to look at more? Which has the potential to be the best, in your opinion?

I like looking at photographs if they are made right. Photo-manips have more potential though. I see that it depends on the photo and the skill of the artist.

Like i've said, it just depends on the photo.
Like this one, i prefer my edited version, because i drew the focal point to her eyes.

@Lama: do you mean Sepia or B&W?

yh, i agree with mo photo manips have loads of potential but lets not rule out the ffact of some outstanding scenes/scenery that is waiting to be phtographed.

they both equally appeal to me.

To be honest, I'm a little on the fence about this. There is so much you can do with photo-manipulation these days that it rarely impresses me anymore. Don't get me wrong, there are some very great manipulations out there, but very few really capture my interest. To me, photo-manipulation is just a shortcut or excuse not to put lots of effort into a great photo with well planned lighting, props, costumes or clothing, makeup, and background. A photograph with all these elements in most cases is more impressive to me. On the other hand, there are so many cliche and overused methods used for photography that just get boring and cheesy after a while.

In our day and age anybody can take a photograph and just as many people can apply basic Photoshop filters or effects to those images. Very few people can actually achieve artistry with their images though, but when they do, whether it is through manipulation or careful planning, it is much more impressive and captivating.

Though this may not exactly fall under the technical definition of photo-manipulation, I think that mixed traditional media added to photography is most interesting to me. Paper + scissors + tape/glue + pencils/paint + photographs = epic.

well to me, photo manipulation is much more than throwing a few filters and adjustments on a raw photo
that is photo enhancement
photo manips, in my opinion, are the combination or otherwise changing the actual properties of an image
i love both forms and have seen great things done with each
but manipulations have the edge for me, due to the absolutely endless possibilities.

What do you think makes an artist truly great? Could it be innovation, execution, ideas, methods or something else? Explain your answer if possible.

Please don't just say 'creativity', because any true artist is creative. What makes that artist unique or creative through your eyes, is what I'm interested in.

Adorable!

For me, there are some stuff:
-Unique style. Everyone with some experience can use a tutorial to make something and call it "mine" (I'm not saying you can't use tutorials, but add a touch of our own, and don't follow a word by word, just use the tricks you learn from it.) but to make a new tutorial or a special piece of art is much better.
-Innovation. It is really cool to see someone trying to do something new and if somebody else is trying to do something just a little different, a new style can be made.
-Well, there are a lot of things, you mentioned some of them, but a little from everything is important. So, I wrote up just two of them, and I guess this can be continued
to something, so keep writing about this.

for me, what I see as a good artist is someone who puts effort into their work.
also style, idea, creativeness, and is fair and gives good criticism all count.

for example:

  • Effort - If you don't put effort into your work, almost no one will like it.
  • Style - You have to keep a style going, like if you shade half of your art, but don't the other, that just doesn't give you a specific personality
  • Idea - this is pretty bold. lots of ideas = lots of art, small amount of ideas = small amount of art.
  • Creativeness - this doesn't mean throwing random paint splatters at it, it means do something unexpected and making it still look decent.
  • Fair - Self explanatory, this basically means don't rip or you won't be respected.
  • CnC - if you give good CC and put effort into it instead of just posting before everyone else, people will come to you with artwork. this also falls into the resect category.

Gotta be concept that sets apart good artist from great ones as artists we are communicators taking the images and or messages in our head and bringing them to the canvas, anyone can say i wanna make this piece about anger and frustration and make the piece to be dark, grungy and red with near perfect execution were the message is clear people get it and appreciate it but it's the ones who's concept is more complex more meaningful even if not technically executed well will visually and mentally engage people take their minds on a trip let them search for your message and meaning as they come up with their own those are the pieces that stand out and will always be remembered along with the artist that created them

the big one for me has to be vision
knowing what a piece will look like
taking the time to mentally plan pre-canvas
and properly executing that vision

when i can see that present in one's work
i am truly awestruck

i think patience is a big factor, if something your making isn't going right then if you have the patience to fix it and make it just right then your gonna do well.
also the ability to take critisism, because i know a few artists that will through it in your face.
umm, modesty aswell, if your boastful your not going anywhere. But i'm not saying don't be proud.
perseverance s another key factor, again if you don't persever your not gonna get anywhere.

If you could change one thing about popular (read: NSL) rating systems, what would you change? Would you change everything, scrap it, or keep it just the way it is?

Well, although I've never been involved in any of them, from what I've heard I would scrap it. From what I hear, the people are very critical and don't make it an enjoyable situation. Being told your horrible by "expert judges" and being judged in that way is just overall horrible. You will never learn at all, let alone improve, in those circumstances IMO. I think one of the best ways to learn is from your mistakes but when they say your always making mistakes, that isn't the best thing either.

Well I kinda disagree Jokester, if you go the to be ratedn then you have to put up with the harshness, if you can't put up with it then i don't think you coud put up with the rating.

Also when you get rated i don't feel that it is supposed to help you, more just tell you how it is. CC is to help you improve and it is CC that i think needs to be a little more polite.

An add on to the question I just asked:
If you could pick the AKs/Mods here (myself, Ts1, and Nicky, for instance), would you enjoy those ratings? Do you think those would be more fair than any other site?

Teswan, simply because he's more active in the GFX scene and well, I know him and his opinions on GFX better than what your thoughts are. If they're fair, most likely, though there are probably a type or two of work he wouldn't know how to rate

Not asking you to pick one, I mean what if we were the rating team for this forum. ~iChar

Oh, well then, I guess it would be fair but I think it would limit people more. I think if there was a more difficult raters test then it would help

Ratings in general are subjective. Even in conventional art, there are some big names that were never considered true "masters" until after their deaths. If I could change anything about ratings, it would be the names of the levels. Instead of being "Mod" or "Pro" or "Novice", one could be "NSL Novice" or "iChar Semi" or "GimpTalk Mod"... Something to show that there is indeed different standards.

And as for having a rating team, those are three of the best names for the job. And methinks you guys are planning something with that.
ts1: just maybe O:
