I think that what yall are talking about is fair and that we should do it...start a post here in the Gallery or in the battle area, so that AA's can get a rating.....we would have to have a form for it though. >.>

doesn't matter to me :P

quote from mustafa

I've been in the game long enough to know that ratings are mostly fuel for one's ego and they vary greatly depending on who rates you.
Part of the whole term that we use as art is there to help us get a better understanding at it. If you care about ratings in that sense, then you have a long long way to go but then again, don't we all.

Ok, I have a topic to talk about. Something which has really been bugging me.

It seems like the more technically better I get, the less the amount of people with no real experience like it. So I've been wondering, if the people with no experience don't really care about the technical values, then what is the point of utilizing them? Why should a person use depth, flow, good colours, composition etc to their fullest if it isn't going to effect anyone's opinion of it anyway?

This stems from a conversation on IRC. We were posting old tags and I posted one of my old SOTW pieces from awhile ago. Alpha Atom said it was "brilliant", but earlier he had said that the tag I made yesterday was "not that good". Technically speaking, the old SOTW piece was awful. Huge focal, bad text, monochromatic, but it didn't seem to bother atom. The one which he said he didn't like had all the boxes ticked and technically, it was one of my best tags. It's actually getting me down that I've been trying to get these things right and people have been seeing my work as getting worse and worse, even if technically I've gone from a novice to intermediate by battleon ratings.

No, I said that particular tag wasn't very good, which in my opinion it wasn't. I didn't like the smudging and the render was bad I also didn't like the text. It wasn't one of you're best. You're other tags are better. I liked that other one because it looked like an old poster, which I liked. Also as a side note I'd rather you didn't directly target me.

I just used yours as an example. Yours isn't the only comment which has led me to the belief stated in the original post.

If someone doesn't appreciate the technical values, they ought to. If they don't then their opinion isn't worth much. I personally think I do, but the only one I don't fully understand is composition. But yeah, if someone doesn't understand the technical values, then their opinion isn't really worth bothering about.

i disagree razackie, art is made to be seen by an audience,so if the audience doesn't like the result, that matters more than whether the audience knows the technical details.

The technical values are too impress other artists :P,I think technical stuff generally helps and such it's just people try to full fill technical parts without thinking about appeal and such, that's when it hinders the piece....

Yeah but Dr@gon, with aesthetic values, whatever I think is good, other people seem to dislike. Whatever I don't like, other people think is amazing. I want to make the best art I can, and I'm pretty stuck on what I'm supposed to do right now. I might just go ahead and make the worst tag I can think of and see how people react.

Not every person's opinion matters
My personal creed all these years is to make art for yourself, and it will be liked by the public if they want to.
Once you start makig for an audience, ou have sold your soul.
And without a soul, how can you call yourself and artist?

Zen, this is a problem facing most artists. What you see as beautiful and a masterpiece might just be mediocre in another's eyes.

The point of art should not be to make something that looks amazing to someone else, it should just look good to you. I'm sure when you started making sigs, you loved every bit of every sig, even though looking back on it now you wonder how you posted it without being embarrassed beyond all hell. That's all you should be trying to do now. Yes, now that you know about technical aspects of tags, not using them would never make you happy. But just make what looks good to you, whether or not others will like it.

I'm more happy now :). I'll make art for myself from now on.

I was depressed before :S. At least it shows I care :D.

I've always made art to satisfy myself. If I think a piece of art is good. Great, an awesome morale booster. If other people like it, even better. If someone doesn't like it, just take it in the chin and move on. Thats what a hobby is about. Pleasing yourself.

But the fact that we are all sharing the same hobby means we also have the privelage to be around people who will like it, and sometimes it's good to be pleasing others instead, we're all out for the same thing. I don't make my art for myself, I make it for everyone and anyone because that's what pleases me

i think you are misinterpreting what i meant. if you make art for the sole purpose of having an audience or fan-base then i agree. but the audience i was talking about are the people you share your work with simply for the purpose of expressing yourself, or learning to be better.

Exactly, just because I didn't like it, doesn't mean its a bad tag. And just because I liked the look of the other one, it doesn't mean that was a good tag.

Why were you even affected by the comments of people with no experience?

For those of you who don't check the Dragonfable forums, there's a design-a-banner art contest going on over there that ends on the 7th of December.

I'm sorry if this doesn't belong here, but I decided to post in this thread for lack of a better place. Maybe a stickied 'what contests are currently being held' thread would be a good idea?

Ok well leading on from that a new topic could be:

Imporvements for the Gallery"

and after the weeks end, we could vote on the suggestions, and maybe the top two or something could be implemetned.

Is there really much more to add?
I mean all I could think of was a gallery register, but I don't see the point in it.

I wish people posted in your gallery because of your work, not your popularity.

Well, you may wish that, but how can you solve it? I don't think you can.

EDIT: People get popular when they're work gets better.
