A Brief Yet, Introductory Review of the Hokey Poke
By Clyde

Put your right hand in and put your right hand out and then you shake it all about. Oh...not that type of Poke? You meant to say Pokemon? Well then *coughs* I guess I should get on with the report, no? ((Man this Squirtle Costume is itchy))

Alright then. Created by Satoshi Tajiri around 1995, Pokemon is a large media franchise owned mainly by Nintendo*. The name "Pokemon" comes from Pocket Monsters, which in Japanese translates to Poketto Monsuta. Those two words pretty much form "Pokemon" if you look at them just right. When it was released for the Gameboy it became one of the greatest games Nintendo had to offer. Though it was second to Mario in popularity, the ability to trade Pokemon with friends via cable set it apart. With over 300 different creatures to train, grow, feed, love immensely, evolve, and maybe even trade, Pokemon became a hit in both Japan and in the United States. Its immense popularity led to a Manga, Anime, and Trading card game, thus becoming a full blown franchise.

These "Pokemon" or "pocket monsters" are basically wild animals that can be captured by Trainers using Pokeballs**. Before beginning your journey, you are given the opportunity to choose on of three beginning pokemon. Depending on which series you are playing, you would most likely get a variant generation of a Grass, Water, or Fire type pokemon (First generation always wins). Whereas, in Pokemon Yellow, you start out with a tiny yellow mouse named Pikachu. To capture a wild pokemon, a trainer would have to weaken any wild pokemon to the point where it could not fight back and use their pokeball. Though many questions seem to arise at this point in the game. Questions like "How does a six foot, three hundred pound dragon fit into this hand sized ball?" and "How exactly can this twelve inch electrical mouse defeat that monster dragon?" are just examples of what a player might ask themselves.

As you proceed, you start to learn a few tricks like battling. It seems your opponent is a childhood rival who never seems to just quit making fun of you and attacking you at the most inconvenient times. Though, battling is the most effective way for you and your Pokemon to gain Experience points and level up to learn more and useful techniques. All the while, you quest to find the Holy Grai- I mean to, become the PokeMaster. To make things better, you must carry a cold heartless Pokemon Index named Dex who gives out some either really obvious information or nothing at all. Along with Dex, six different pokemon, each with special needs, are your companions.

The rest of your Pokemon are stored within a Computer.*** So while they live it up in there, you spend a few hours circling around in the grass in hopes to evolve your Pokemon. Evolving in Pokemon is like sending them through a metamorphosis. They "evolve" and turn out to have different characteristics and specific features. They keep a somewhat similar appearance to them and also come jam packed with a new arsenal of techniques and abilities. Evolving your pokemon has its pros and cons, but over-all it comes down to personal choice.

If you aren't the type that likes to dance around high grass or swim in the sea for Random encounters with Pokemon, then might I suggest collecting shiny pieces of metal that hold some sort of significance in this game? Did I mention they determine whether or not you can use specific moves necessary for advancing in the game****? If you need to cut down that single skinny bush to get to the next town then you aren't going to make it without Cut. To earn Gym Badges of interesting shininess you must defeat Gym Leaders. These are apparently the uber strong guys who run the place without having to fight the hench(wo)men.

After earning eight shiny doohickeys you gain permission to commence the dance. Afterwards you may show off your badges to earn a chance to test your skills against the Elite Four. Now the one ultimate secret you must know when it comes to playing Pokemon is to- Whoops looks like Team Rocket is trying to steal my pokemon again so I have to go.

*If you don't know who or what Nintendo is, then I think you should stop what you're doing and pick up a GameBoy or a DS.
**If that isn't some type of slavery, I don't know what is.
***Technology is amazing. Though, what if the computer was down that day? *insert doom music*
****For Example HM15: Mark Territory - Prevents other Pokemon from stealing ur base.

I liked this article very much, it explained the ancient art of the Pokémanz to the people who aren't very familiar with it.
I also like how it ties in with the fact that a lot of AKs and forumites are taking the guise of Pokémon, including myself.
vv Points to Sig vv

Nice article, Uncle Glyde.

Anyone who never played a pokemon game must do it NAO. At least one. It's quite FUN, even if the story is the same in most games.

Aye. That it is. Though I might have accidentally erased data on half of my games (:/), I've still mastered Blue, Red, and Yellow. (I hear green is only in Japan--so my Blue used a Bulbasaur instead of a Squirtle. I think I also used a Squirtle instead of a Charmander in Red. Hard to remember what you accidentally wiped.) Lovely games, even if the merchandise has become something to avoid like the plague. I have other Pokemon games as well, but nothing quite beat the originals. ;)
