Bedtime Story I remember a bedtime story I read almost evey night The story of Snow White. Every night, I would settle back with a candle To enhance the magic My grandma would settle against my chipped table Her old bones creaking her face pulled up in a warm, loving smile She would always ask me the same question "Are we sitting comfortably?" Then she would begin; "Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl...." Her voice painted mesmerising patterns in the air A tale of enthralling attraction Of princes, poison oak, dwarves, dragons, kings and kisses And living happily ever after. Why doesn't life end like that? Loup-Garou The moon reveals herself to us Unreachable, perfect, beautiful Our mother. Skin rips and stretches Bones crunch and break Then reform, melting together Fur erupts in tufts Teeth sharpen, ivory knives Nails become claws, hidden weapons Complete, we drop to all fours. Perfect senses acute. Hunger chafing, tongue lolling, paws thundering To bring down prey. Warm blood Fast, failing heart Soft eyes vacant, glazed Matted pelt, open stomach Guts and bones exposed to the ravening pack. Seven days to the wolves Our changeling skin. Hiding by day, always in plain sight Hunting by night, always in dark shadows A dual nature, existence. We are Loup-Garou.
