Chapter 1: Awakened

HPP-F005 woke up in a daze. His vision was blurred, he was only able to see green. He blinked a few times to shake off the daze, and he was able to see everything around him. He looked around only to see a room full of strange contraptions, all of which were, of course, shaded green. Various flashing lights and screen and buttons were on the devices, all of which seemed extremely strange to HPP-F005. The boy moved an arm experimentally, but the limb moved slowly, as if it was dragging a weight along. He then realized he was floating, surrounded by a vivid, thick, green liquid, explaining the color of the entire room. Suddenly realizing he was unable to breathe, the impulse to panic came into his brain immediately. But he realized that he was not drowning, which confused him. His eyes caught the various wires attached to several places on his body. He saw people in the room, running around frantically, some pushing buttons and others pulling levers.

Suddenly, he heard a loud, blaring noise, and the liquid surrounded him seemed to be draining into the floor of the chamber. Soon, he could see everything in its true color, though the room did not have much color at all. The machines were silver, and the people were all wearing clean, white coats. But he noticed something, the faces he saw seemed to be changing, as if they were being squeezed through an hourglass. But he soon realized that the glass barrier was gone, and all the wires seemed to have fallen off. One person walked slowly towards him, and HPP-F005 heard him speak.

"Hello," he greeted, "Can you understand me?"

HPP-F005 took a moment to process the words. He answered, "Yes, I can understand you."

The group cheered, much to his surprise. "Why do you cheer? I only spoke five words."

But this made them cheer even more. The same man who greeted him spoke again.

"Follow me, I will answer any questions you may have. Though I don't expect you have many."

HPP-F005 followed the man out of the room into a hall. More people in the same white, pressed, lab coats were cheering. It seemed strange to the boy that so many people were this happy about a naked child waking up in a vat of green liquid. The man led him into a small room, with white walls and a bed. Sunlight was streaming through a single window on the wall in front of him. It was basically a white box with a bed and window. The man kneeled down and retrieved a bag of clothes from under the mattress. He gave it to HPP-F005. "Put this on," the man said. "You can't go around like that all the time."

The boy did as he was told, putting on the suit made for him. In a few minutes, he was wearing a white cotton shirt and white cotton pants. The man nodded, and started to speak, but HPP-F005 already started to ask his question.

"Who are you?" he asked quickly.

The man chuckled and said, "Well, you certainly took advantage of my offer. I am Professor Edward Duswin."

"Thank you, professor. Now, I have only two questions left. Where am I?"

"You are in a secret underground US laboratory. This is where the Human Protection Project takes place. As for location, you are in an isolated location in Nevada. Now your second question?"

"Who am I?"

The professor sighed, "Well, you are the Human Protection Program. Project Highborn, as it was called incognito."

"So I am a tool of the humans. Made from genes selected by the people here."

"Well, yes. A donor allowed their DNA to be used by the laboratory. We made you from that DNA. But the donor made a request, that you be named Adam when we finished the project."

"So, I am Adam," the newly dubbed HPP-F005 concluded.

"Yes," said the professor, "Now, you must be hungry. You see that button on the side of your bed?" He pointed to a small, red button on the side of the white bed. "Pressing that button will signal an attendant to your room. You can ask the attendant to bring you a meal." Professor Duswin got off the bed. "Now, I must be off. Tomorrow, I will give you a tour of the laboratory."

The professor exited the room, leaving Adam pressing a small, red button.

Chapter 2: John

Adam awoke from a deep sleep, his first "real" sleep. He had eaten, in his mind, all the meals he had missed during his twelve years of incubation. He silently slipped out of the covers and walked out of his room.

Professer Duswin said he would show me where I am, Adam thought, But where is he?

He started to wander around the corridors, seeing people dressed in the same white coats he had seen the so many times already. As he passed one room, he heard snarling and shouting.

"Let me out!" Adam heard, "I'll rip off you're faces! You made me into this! You made me into a freak!"

The boy walked into the room, only to see people walking casually about while a large, hairy creature cursed at them from a cage. A man glanced Adam's way, then doing a double take. The boy recognized him as he walked towards him.

"Adam?" Professer Duswin asked, "Why are you here? It's six in the morning."

"I am looking for you," he answered, "You said you would show me where I am."

"Ahh, yes. I nearly forgot. Let me just finish a few observation on John."

"John? Do you refer to that large, angry creature?"

"Hey! Duswin!" the creature yelled, "Questions, who just said that, and why is a kid in a maximum security U.S. labratory?

The professer started to answer, but Adam beat him to it. "I had said that and I am not a "kid". I am HPP-F005, Adam is my name. I am part of the U.S. Human Protection Project. You are John, are you not?"

The creature blinked, not expecting such a thorough answer. "Uhh, yeah. I'm John, or HPP-A001, as you might want to call me. So, they made another freak? What do you do, fly? Shoot lasers? Super strength?"

John laughed cruelly, but Adam was confused at these questions.

"What do you mean, 'What do you do?'" he questioned, "I do not do anything except basic functions. Breathing, walking, etc."

John sneered, "Don't be stupid, you have to do something. These scientist wouldn't have made you just so you could breath and walk and scratch yourself. You're one of us, one of the Highborn."

The young boy was puzzled, "I am Highborn? Professer, what does he mean, Highborn?"

"Well," Duswin said, "You are not the only part of the Human Protection Project. There are four others, including John, that were created to do the same purpose as you: protect mankind."

"Yeah, right," growled John, "You call this something that would protect people?"

He pointed to his face, causing Adam to take a closer look at the creature.

John was covered with thick, brown fur. He had large, grey eyes and pointed ears like a dog. He had a long snout, and a mouth full of menacing sharp, yellow fangs. The creature had a huge torso, and stood with a slouch. His hands and feet were paws, all of which had terrifying yellow claws. He stood on his hind legs, both very similar to a dog's leg, and a tail that hung limp on his back. To Adam, he resembled a huge, humanoid wolf.

"So, kid," John growled, "I don't look like a protecter, right?"

"No," Adam said.

"Well I'm not. I would kill these people rather than defend them. They made me into this, a beast."

"Okay, John," Duswin interrupted, "That's enough. I'll be back later for the usual tests."

John walked away from him, sitting in a corner of the cage.

"Well, Adam," Duswin said, "Let's go look around, shall we?"

"Yes," he answered absentminded, "Let us go."

As they began to leave, a scientist ran up to Professer Duswin and whispered in his ear. He bagan to look worried, and engaged in a whispered converstion with the other scientist. Adam could hear both clearly.

"Is she stable?" the professer asked.

"She may not be for long," the other answered, "The readings are beginning to be a bit shaky, we need your help immediately."

The professer turned to Adam. "I am afraid that my help is needed, Adam. The tour will have to be postponed."

"Yes, professer," the boy said. But John spoke as both began to leave.

"I can show him around," he said, "I won't maul the scientists. Or, try not to."

"John, remember why we put you in there," Duswin warned, "If you show Adam the lab, you cannot interfere with the work. So, no raiding the fridge again."

John looked disappointed. "Fine. But you better get me some better food when I come back. The gruel you feed me gets really unsavory when you eat it sixteen years straight."

Chapter 3: Louise

John led Adam down the corridor, telling the story of his life rather than showing the boy around.

"Hrmp, damn the people here," he cursed, "turning DNA into soldiers bred to do their bidding."

"But if they did not make us," he objected, "we would not be here."

John sneered, though it sounded much more like a growl. "You know nothing, kid. We're all clones of a person, we would exist if we weren't made."

"We would not think as we do now. We would not be individual organisms."

And so, they argued over if they would exist without the project. John snarled angrily as he spoke, sore about the topic, putting down any reason before Adam could justify it. Adam kept using the logic genetically implanted in his brain to keep from losing the argument. But eventually, John tired and ended the conversation with a, "Yeah, yeah." His young acquaintance would have kept talking, but they seemed to have reached where they were going.

"We're here," the larger boy said. They entered a room full of bars, though Adam could only see the outlines of the rods through the dimly lit place. and sacks made to look like people. The floor seemed to be made of cotton and the remains of the dummies. In the center of the room, a figure dress in black with gleaming, red glasses. He was sparring with one of the sacks, the stuffing flying with each hit. He stopped and gasped as he saw John and Adam.

"John!" he announced joyfully while walking towards the two, "How have you been?"

"How do you think I've been after almost fifteen years in a cage?" he growled.

The other boy looked hurt, then laughed heartily.

"You always have been a joker," he chuckled, patting John on the back. They shared a guffaw while talking with each other, like a two old friends seeing each other for the first time in a long while. That is probably the case, Adam thought.

The boy in the black suit took notice of the staring child. "Who is this?"

"Adam, the newest Highborn," the largest Highborn said with scorn.

The black-suited boy looked outraged, screaming something not appropriate to repeat here. "Another?" he yelled, "Four is enough! They have to ruin another life?"

John snarled in agreement. "Yeah. Don't know what he does, but he's part of the Final section of Project Highborn."

The outraged Highborn seemed to calm down a bit. "So, what do you do?"

Adam was about to give the same answer he gave John, but the beast beat him to it.

"I don't know, and I don't think he does either," he answered, "Let's hope he's another Loki, minus the 'Loki'."

The other nodded in agreement. He introduced himself to Adam.

"I am Louise," he said with a French accent Adam hadn't noticed before, "HPP-R002. Part of the Reconnaissance section of Project Highborn."

"I am Adam," the boy responded, "HPP-F005. Why do you feel so much resentment against the people here?"

Louise shook his head. "I don't hate the people much, Professor Duswin is a good man. But what we have been molded into, that is what the Highborn hate."

Adam look at the Louise, noting his features. He had brown hair, which looked neat despite the fact that he had just been sparring with a dummy. Adam could make out a blue behind the red-tinted glasses. They must be a stunning blue to come out through colored classes, he thought. Louise also had extremely pale skin, nearly transparent. His face was kind, though his eerie features halved the effect. He was wearing a sleek, black jumpsuit, covering all of his body except for his head. As Adam studied him, John interrupted.

"Hey Lou, we gotta go," he said, "Promised Duswin to show him around."

"Ahh, then I bid you adieu," Louise said, bowing politely.

The two left, leaving Louise beating a sack senseless.

Chapter 4: Loki and Einstein

John led Adam into a large chamber, completely white and empty. Opposite of the two, there was a door. It seemed to be made of metal, for it was grey and lustrous. Platinum, Adam concluded, with a diamond coating. Extremely strong, but why is it here?

"Stay here," John told the boy. He walked cautiously to the nearly invulnerable gate that was a door. Suddenly, several muffled explosions were heard, and the room shook violently. John growled, his ears folded back and his teeth baring. Whatever was behind that door was dangerous. Or incredible stupid, Adam thought.

The boy walked casually towards the platinum door. He turned a knob made out of diamond and slowly opened the metal block. Suddenly, a burst of fire bellowed out of the room. Adam rolled out of the way just in time.

"I'm gonna kill you, Loki!" John screamed, running into the room on all fours. Adam followed, only to see him chasing a soot covered figure around the room.

"It wasn't my fault!" the figure objected. "You opened the door when I was experimenting!"

"How did you even get explosives? Did you sneak into the storage room and steal the nuclear batteries again?"

"I did not! I stole the fuel cells. Gimme a break, at least there's no radioactive waste!"

Adam grabbed John, who thrashed around, trying to get out of the young boy’s grip.

"Let me get the little brat! I'll kill him!"

"John," Adam said, "calm down. Nothing was damaged. Except this room, perhaps."

John eventually calmed down, and his young companion walked over to the black figure, who was on top of a large shelf. "Is he okay now?" it asked.

"Yes, he will not rip your head off and throw your carcass into the desert for the vulture to feast on."

"Gee, that's reassuring."

The figure held out his hand. "I'm Loki, HPP-F004, if you want to call me that. I'm also known as Trikz."

The gesture was polite, but Adam sensed deception in the other boy's voice. Instead of shaking hands, Adam took the hand and shoved it between Loki's legs,(he had been aiming for the stomach.) The deceiver shook violently, blue sparks dancing around his body. He fell over, smoking. John keeled over, hysterical.

But Adam heard something over his friend’s laughter. A faint, steady rhythm. It slowly grew swifter as the moments passed. He recognized the sound immediately. It was a heartbeat.

"There is another person in this room," he confirmed.

He rushed to the closest corner of the room, ripping a cloth out that hadn't been seen before, revealing a scrawny, pale boy.

"Hello," the small child greeted, getting up from the floor. "It seems I have been discovered. I do believe introduction is in order. I am Einstein, Albert Einstein. HPP-I003, product of the Intelligence sect of Project Highborn. You found me a bit sooner than I expected."

Adam took a close look at the person claiming to be Albert Einstein. He was thin, with skin nearly as white as Louise's. His eyes were a deep brown, and he was shaved bald. There wasn't much to how he looked, but there seemed to be much going on in his mind.

Albert's arm twitched simultaneously with his eye. John rushed over to him, catching him as he fell.

"Einstein, what are you doing helping Loki?" he asked. "What was the deal? Did he go into Vegas again?"

Einstein nodded. "But, he didn't steal it, he won the money in a casino."

"Okay, at least he didn't caught." John laid him down on a bed, ripping the burnt plastic cover off of it. "Get some rest, you don't want to overload again."

He nodded. The boy's eyes closed, and his body went limp. He seemed to have simply shut down, Adam thought.

"Hey, you better go back to your room," John suggested, picking up a blue rod with a tesla coil in it. "I'm really hungry, and you don't want to be next to me while I have this."

Adam wisely took his advice, hopping over Loki's body and walking out of the room.

Chapter 5: Training

Adam sat on his bed, awaiting Professor Duswin’s arrival. He listened to the yelling and panic, a result of a certain Highborn in the cafeteria. The door creaked open, and the professor entered the room.

"Ahh, Adam," he greeted. "I trust John did his job of showing you the laboratory."

"Somewhat," the boy answered. "He introduced me to the other Highborn."

"Yes, and I believe that you wish to learn more about each of them, including John."

"Yes."

The professor sat on Adam's bed, remembering the history of each Highborn. "I do believe I'll start with John."

"John was the first Highborn made, when the project started, one hundred years ago. He was the Animalia sect of the project, along with others."

"Where are the others?" Adam inquired.

"They did not survive," Professor Duswin answered. "There were many others, human DNA mixed with animal DNA. Bear, eagle, tiger, crocodile, and of course, wolf. John was the last one, and he took ninety-three years to complete. Unfortunately, his personality is mixed with his wolf instinct, and he has a hatred for most humans."

"Yes. It explains his rather impulsive behavior. What about Louise?"

"Louise. He was a joint project with the U.S. and France. After World War II, both countries decided to create the perfect reconnaissance soldier. Thus, Louise was created. Took forty-nine years to create. He works solely at night, extremely flexible, and has much better night vision than humans But somehow, he had mutated in his chamber. His body creates a substitute for vitamin D, but instead of sunlight, his body uses moonlight to create the substitute. This made sunlight completely intolerable to him, and his body crates a burning sensation when it is exposed to it. He also doesn't take in iron as well as humans, so he needs to drink blood at least once every few months to survive. Amazing, really."

"Interesting," Adam commented. "What about Loki and Albert?"

"Albert was created from the DNA of Albert Einstein. He has an I.Q. of well over three hundred. He was created to be a tactical military mind. However, we thought that we could accelerate his growth. As a result, his mind tends to overload, much like a computer, and shut down his body. As for Loki, he was a failure. He is average in every mental and physical way. Well, perhaps not all mental ways. He is extremely mischievous, constantly taking one of our cars and causing havoc in Las Vegas."

"Thank you, Professor Duswin. I do believe I must sleep now."

"Very well," Duswin said. " Good night, Adam."

* * *

Adam woke up the next day, sunlight streaming into the room from the single window. He threw off his sheets and walked into the hall. He walked down the corridor, looking for the professor.

"Well, I do believe I must go wake him," Adam heard Professor Duswin say. The voice seemed to have come from the room on the boy's right. He entered the room, only to find a man charging at him with a wooden pole. Adam sidestepped, grabbing the pole and quickly throwing it, and his assailant, flying across the room.

"Well, he seems to be very alert," Professor Duswin said. "Don't you think?"

The man sitting half conscious on the floor moaned.

"Well, I do believe explanation is in order. We are beginning your training today, Adam. That attack was a test to see how you would react to the sudden charge. You did quite well, if I do say so myself."

"Well," Adam said. "I will start training."

But after three sessions of sparring, his trainer had become unconscious, with two broken ribs, a broken arm and leg, and a minor concussion.

"Good job, Adam," Duswin praised. "But you didn't have to be so...rough.”

"I did what was necessary to defeat my opponent," Adam answered.

"Yes, but next time, try not to send your trainer to the infirmary."

Chapter 6: Activated

Professor Duswin lead Adam down another hall to his next exercise.

"Now, Adam," he said. "We will now begin your speed and endurance training. We will see how fast you can run, and how long."

"Yes, professor," Adam answered.

They entered an enormous room, filled with weights and an Olympic-sized track. Other devices that caught Adam's eye were the components for a tazer, a generator, and several stun guns.

"Alright, we will now begin your training," the professor announced. "The first exercise is simple: run the mile-long course as fast as you can."

"Yes, professor," Adam said, right before sprinting off onto the track, running so fast that he would put a cheetah to shame. He kept low, and his feet seemed to almost fly, never touching the ground for more than a second. The professor watched, holding a timer he had started just in time. The runner finished shortly, slightly tired.

"Well done, Adam," Duswin congratulated. "Five minutes and twenty-six seconds. Now, we will move onto your endurance exercise."

The professor walked over to the nearby pile of equipment, dragging two metal braces out.

"We will, use these to see how you perform." Professor Duswin dropped both braces, clutching his back. "They really should have assistants do this. I'm too old for heavy lifting."

Adam picked up both braces, which seemed to go on his arms. He strapped both on, adjusting to the added weight. "I believe that you want me to run the course as long as I can while keeping these braces up, am I correct?"

Duswin nodded, plopping down against the wall. "Keep the same pace for as long as you can. Do not speed up, and, go."

He pressed a button on the timer. Adam ran back onto the track, keeping both arms in the air. It was as if he was pretending to be an airplane, which was humorous to the professor. But unlike the children that pretended to be planes, Adam kept running, and running. If any child could run around as long as him, they would make their mother collapse from exhaustion, Duswin thought, chuckling at the idea. The boy ran for almost an hour before stopping. He removed the braces, drenched in sweat. He was panting hard, which he shouldn't have been.

"Well," the professor said, getting up from the floor, "it seems that not all your programming has been activated. You could have gone much faster and much longer. Now follow me, we will activate the rest of your mind."

He walked out of the room, Adam following. Duswin walked down the corridor, leading his young accomplice into a section of the laboratory he had never even seen. No one else seemed to be around, and there was only one door, at the end of the hall. They reached it shortly, a chrome colored door that shone bright from the lights. The professor placed his hand on a pad and spoke clearly into a microphone.

"Edward Duswin," he stated. The door approved his identification, sliding into the side. Inside, however, was a large group of men wearing bulletproof suits and wielding machine guns, pistols, samurai swords, and grenade launchers. There were even anti-air missiles and about five mounted turrets.

"Identification, sir," one man asked. The professor complied, showing an I.D. to the man. "Very well, this way."

The man lead the professor and Adam across the room, the soldiers parting to create a clear path. He led them to another chrome door, this time with a camera and a speaker.

"Authorization, please," a feminine voice asked.

"You," the man said, pointing at Adam, "You have to answer."

Adam stepped up to the door. "I am HPP-F005, product of the Final section of the Human Protection Project. Adam, as other call me."

The door whirred, opening to reveal a small, nearly empty room. It was dimly lit, with only three lamps dangling from the ceiling. The only things inside of it were a metal chair and a metal helmet with various wires attached to it.

"Adam," the professor said, "You must go in alone now. Only the Highborn are permitted to enter this room. The others will be waiting for you.”

“Others?” the boy questioned. “Who are the others?”

“It’s us,” a gruff voice said. “All four Highborn are here.”

The voice was John’s, and he wasn’t alone. Three more Highborn stepped out of the shadows. Louise, Einstein, even Loki, who didn’t seem to have washed himself off since yesterday’s events. But he had his hair combed back, and Adam could see small bits of tan on his face. “Adam, if you would,” Louise said in his French accent.

Adam walked slowly into the room, towards the chair and the helmet sitting on it. The door closed behind him, and he reached where he was going. He stood in front of the glistening seat and the wired contraption. He looked back at the other four, unsure what to do.

“Put on the helmet,” John answered. “It’ll fully activate your programming.”

“But this is a very big decision,” Louise added. “You put on that helmet, you will eventually leave the laboratory.”

“The helmet will stimulate different sections of your mind,” Einstein explained. “There will be three phases of this operation, and when completed, you will be vigorously trained for military service. You may remove the helmet any time after the first phase. Removing the helmet before the completion of the first phase could result in major brain damage and possibly insanity.”

“Alright, Einstein,” Loki said. “Don’t go showing off that head of yours, it could burn out. Listen, Adam, you put on that helmet and complete the process, you probably won’t see anyone of us, Highborn or scientist, ever again. None of us have ever completed the process, that’s why none of us have left yet. So, what’ll it be?”

Adam looked at the others. These were others who were made for the same reason he was. They were, in a way, his family. He turned his gazed to the shining device sitting on the chair. It would change his life, for better or worse. The Highborn placed the helmet on his head and sat in the chair, awaiting activation.

The others looked downcast. They were losing a Highborn, something that hasn’t happened in any of their lives.

“Program activation process initiated,” said the same female voice at the door.

Chapter 7: Preparing

"First phase initiated." the AI said.

The helmet hummed in Adam's ears. He felt energy pulsing into his brain. He felt himself gaining strength, his exhaustion from running drained away. But his body remained the same, showing no sign of the increase of power. But the feeling of energy pulsing into his body gradually left Adam. He was strong now, but he was not yet fully active.

"Programming thirty-five percent activated. Second phase initiated."

Now the device unlocked knowledge in Adam's brain. The wisdom broke free from it's prison, filling his head with logic and facts. The Earth's atmosphere is roughly seventy-eight percent nitrogen, a fact mentally spouted, randomly popping up in Adam's head. The knowledge that had emerged in his brain was almost enough to rival Einstein's. Almost.

"Programming seventy-two percent active. Final phase initiated."

The final phase of the process began. Every one of his five sense began to enhance. His sight was first, he saw every detail in the room(which wasn't very helpful since most of it wasn't lit.) His smell was next. Every scent in the room drifted into his sinuses, including the soot Loki was covered in. Adam resisted the urge to cough. Last was his hearing. The faint buzzing emitting from the helmet grew in volume. He even heard the breathing and heartbeat of the others, though some were doing more than simply breathing.

“We lost Adam,” John said with a whimper in his throat.

“Ahh, do not be so sad, my friend,” Louise soothed. “It had to happen to one of us. After all, he is the fifth, the ‘perfected’ version.”

“Yeah, you’re right. But he’s the only kid here that doesn’t blow things up on a regular basis.”

“Programming fully activated,” the computer announced.

Adam removed the helmet, a changed person.

***

The intensive military training Einstein mentioned began shortly after his activation. He was taught five different martial arts and how to use hundreds of different weapons. Fortunately, the knowledge on how to use every weapon and perform every fighting style was already implanted in his brain, so he had no trouble learning. After three short months, he had excelled in every aspect of his person, physically and mentally. He looked no different as he did before his training started, but he was stronger, faster, and smarter than he ever was before. But he barely saw any of the other Highborn. So, after training, he simply sat in his room. He wouldn’t come out for days on end. Not because he was sad, he felt no emotion, but because there was nothing more to do. The silence was finally broken one day, when Professor Duswin received a letter, from the director of Project Highborn. It read:

Dear Professor Duswin,

I have been notarized that HPP-F005 has completed training. He is to be immediately transferred to the secret military base in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I also have authorization to transfer the other four Human Protection Program units to the base. I suggest you come too. We’ve found it, and we need all the help we can get. There's trouble in the Garden of the Gods.

-The Director of Project Highborn.

Chapter 8:The Others

The long trip from the lab to Connecticut was not a pleasant one. John wasn't very used to flying, so he spent most of the trip in the bathroom, vomiting. Louise didn't like being above the clouds, so he closed more than half of the plane's windows and forced the pilot to turn off all the lights.

This was also the first time Adam had seen Loki without being covered with soot. He had very dark skin, and short black hair. His eyes were green, a feature that did not seem to match the rest of him.

Loki went the first five minutes of the trip unrestrained, which was before he was caught with a spare fuel rod. He then was tied up and gagged by John, and Louise, and two security guards that were onboard. The professor didn't want Einstein to have a meltdown if they experienced turbulance, so he had him shut down. Adam sat patiently in his seat the entire trip.

Finally, three hours later, they touched down in a secluded area, near the Garden Of The Gods.

“Well, that went better than expected,” Duswin speculated, wiping the contents of John’s stomach off his shoe with a rag.

The others came off the plane in rather…different ways than the professor. John had to be dragged out of the bathroom, which took three men to do. Louis complained that his skin hurt from the lights. Loki was still tied up when he got off, and immediately surrounded by six armed security guards.

The last two off were Adam and Einstein. As they came off the plane, a man in a general’s uniform walked out to greet them.

“Hello, Professor Duswin,” he said. “And company.”

“Hello, general,” the professor said. “So, why have you called us here?”

“Follow me, and you will find out.”

The general walked back into the base, with Duswin and the others following. They entered a hallway, bustling with armed soldiers. Every Highborn, except Adam, was extremely nervous. Regular humans would be very unsettled at the sight of John, and Louise, and they had no doubt heard of what each of them could do. The general lead them into a small room, furnished with only a large table and several seat surrounding it. In three of the seats, furthest from the group, were more soldiers, probably of a high rank, all around their sixties.

“There’s no time for small talk,” one of them immediately said. “Take a seat.”

They did as they were instructed. Another one of the old soldiers spoke.

“Let’s cut to the chase. We’ve found something, something big, in the Garden Of The Gods.”

“Obviously,” the professor retorted. “Why else would we be in Colorado Springs, vacationing?”

The commander ignored the professor’s comment. “Surveillance shows activity in the Garden Of The Gods. It’s more than normal, we believe there were people there.”

“'Were?'”

“'Were' as in, before we saw what came out. Take a look.”

The officer dropped a vanilla folder on the table. Pictures of what appeared to be humans were shown, yet the creatures had some non-human features. Duswin examined the photos closely.

“Strange, these seem to be humans, but their ears are pointed. And this one’s hair is an unusually bright shade of grey, but it seems to be at an adolescent age, perhaps only fifteen.”

“So, you see the problem here. We’ve been studying these creatures for over five months, and we have no indication of whether they are hostile. If we don’t have any reason not to attack them, we’ll have a war on our hands.”

“And how, general, would you attack them?” inquired the professor

“Reports show that these creatures have no weapons,” the commander continued. “But we have been unable to determine where the main force is. However, we’ve recently found evidence of some cloaking technology, much more advanced than human tech.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.” There was an awkward silence, followed by a sneer from the general.

“The Highborn, of course.” he answered.

The professor sighed. He had been afraid that the commander would say that.

Almost instantly, armed soldiers rushed into the room. Every Highborn sprang from their seats, facing their captors. All except Adam, who patiently waited in his chair. The soldiers surrounded them, every one holding an AA-12.

“Automatic shotguns?” Loki asked in disbelief. “Wow, they must really not like us.”

“Keep your mouth shut,” John snapped. He snarled at the soldiers, some backing away a few steps.

The professor glared the commander. “They’ll never help you. Even if you kill one, the rest would rather die than follow your orders.

“Oh, I know that,” the old man said casually. He pulled a Glock from its holster and aimed it at the professor.

“Now they’ll help me.”
