Go to the top of the page. Click on the link that says "profile".
That will take you to a page that looks like this.

Look down the page until you see a section that looks like this.
Click the link circled here.
That will bring you to this page.
Pick an avvy from the choices offered, click on it, and then click "OK" when you see this. (speedykat is just an example)
Go back to the window where you have your Profile page displayed. Make sure that the " Display Avatar" circle is ticked.
Lastly, go down to the very bottom of the page, and click " apply".
You should now have an avatar.
