My suggestion would be to remove them as they serve no practical purpose Heh... you're looking for practical purpose in emoticons? Frankly, I'd personally rather see the reverse of what you propose: removal of the generic emoticons in favor of ones that have been customized for our forums. Because, let's face it, there's very little difference if I end my train of thought with a as opposed to a in terms of spam or the overall effect on the forums. And if I'm the type who's going to spam a post with smilies, I can just as easily do it with the standard generic emoticons as I can with a Twilly emoticon or a frogzard head. Emoticons are meant to be fun and to allow a bit of expression in your posts. As long as they remain below the general three-per-post limit we enforce, they're relatively harmless. And if they truly bother you that much, you always have the option to select "Don't show Smiley Faces in posts" from the "Speed Options" section of your forum profile.
