Note: I do not know if this feature is already available, please tell me if it is.
Another note: I know you can subscribe to boards but an RSS feed has a few more benefits.

The reason I think that we should have an RSS feed for certain boards is that there are online "readers" such as Google Reader, I would still be using it if I could get, for example, "The Gallery" as an RSS feed on it. It also has many other uses, such as desktop RSS feeds, which I've been using for some time now and are very useful, I can use them on other forums, just wondering if we could have one on here. Thank you for reading.

I'm going to go ahead and bump this. It's been 24 hours at least, and I've had no feedback. I wanna hear what the staff have to say. i.e. Is it possible and if so, will it happen?

Please do not double post, as there is no need to bump a thread if it is still in page 1. The staff will reply to this suggestion when they get time, so please wait them reply.

Wxo, maybe this will help:

quote:

RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically.

They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based.

A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URI or by clicking an RSS icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process.

The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.

@Wxo, the only possible con I could think of is work for the coders, but I'm not sure RSS feeds are even that hard. Might be kinda difficult for a forum, not sure.

I still don't understand what it, or how it's useful. I read the definition, but no direct usefulness was stated that I see fit here. By updates, does it mean a little pop up saying, 'Wxo has posted a response to your topic.' sorta like the pm system? Or is it like a more detail version of the subscribe function? I don't understand what exactly is the purpose. How does it make communication on this forum easier?

It is both a more detailed version of a "Subscribe" function and it could also make a pop-up come out with a message saying that a reply has been posted.

But yet, I have to disagree with this idea. As Wxo said, we already have the "Subscribe" function.

No it's not like the subscribe function, it doesn't work like that at all. For example, there are certain "readers" that follow all your RSS feeds for you. So I could have an RSS feed for say.... a thread, and it'd go on a reader and show me the reply. Or if you were to get an RSS feed for an entire board, it'd show you all the replys on the "reader".

Are you saying it's a function such as the status system on facebook or myspace, where everyone updates it while the others comment, or a blog like system?

No.... do you have any idea what an RSS feed is?

Seriously....

Right. It shows you on another website the new post on the thread you got an RSS feed for.... I'll show you a picture.

That's an RSS feed for a wallpaper website I've "subscribed" to. Replace that with a forum post. So it shows me the new post on the board/thread I've "subscribed" to.

I don't see a need for it, being that the threads are already bolded and marked yellow when posted in. There already is a subscribe feature in addition to that. If it showed a small popup, similar to that of the social networks, that was linked to your threads/posts saying that they've been replied live as they are posted, then I'd support it.

You clearly misunderstand the point of this. I don't want to have to open my browser to look at my sites. I have a desktop RSS feed. I want the forums on my desktop and I want them in my Google Reader, so I can look at my threads without actually going on the forum. I don't see how the subscribe feature does this. It has absolutely nothing to do with the forum. There's no point in it telling me live because if I'm on the forum to get the pop-up... I'll be looking anyway.
