Human Nature “This is reality, give in to your limits,” I hear it all the time, but I won’t let them win, it’s Demeaning to think the spirit’s not enough. It’s saved my ass from some nightmarish stuff. Accept what won’t change only after you’ve tried Or you’ll look back and wonder if you honestly lied To yourself ever since, about everything you’ve seen. With your eyes clamped shut, you won’t be so keen To take a look in the mirror, see what you are, But everyone says this will get you so far. They say we’re so broken we’d be shattered by truth. "We know that we’re worthless. We don’t need proof." The beers in your belly hide the feeling of death. They say ‘Kill your soul,’ but in the same breath-- They say humans are full of boundless ambition, Seeking only to advance their position At the top of the heap, astride fingers and toes, So many below that God only knows How they sleep every night without hearing the screams Of their sad little hill all night long in their dreams. The people they stepped on rise, fighting back; They should wake every night to a panic attack. But they sealed their heart to prevent such a risk; It’s cooler, less heat, and it moves more brisk. Type A personalities run you into the ground. We’re told that’s success, that it’s perfectly sound. Forget courtesy, camaraderie, compassion, close friends. Let go of your heart to reach your own ends. If that’s where Earth’s headed then Fly Me to the Moon, ‘Cause to be Frank, screw that, I won’t fall so soon. But if our will’s so great and we won’t hesitate, Why do people say that you can’t stop fate, That we’re animals in cages? To excuse their rages, And explain away behaviors we’ve defied for ages. They cite instinct when we can’t hunt tooth and nail, They speak of ‘human nature’ with theories so frail They forget all the variables, a layman’s mistake; Generalizations are all they can make. If we turn into machines to appease the mighty Green, If we turn into vultures and still call ourselves clean, If we can pack a pack animal into a colony, Then blaming Mother Nature holds no water, see You can whine about hormones, say you’re only a man, But you’re just a boy if that’s your master plan. Weakness is a lie we use to lock ourselves in. We’re stronger than we dreamed; let the games begin.
