Birth from Death

Deep in the heart of La Castillo Vida Negra, there is a fountain, the name of which has long since worn away. Some brave Nocturans call it The Dawn Fountain.

---

Around 500 years ago, a man named Drell walked Lore. He was the most powerful necromancer of the time, and using the power of black magic and an army of the dead, he erected a castle on the remote island of Paxia. This castle became known as La Castillo Vida Negra.

Drell existed here for many years, surrounded by his dark clan. His only friend was his familiar, Noctros, who now leads the clan in his Master’s absence. Despite his lonely existence, Drell seemed content.

However, after a time, Drell became restless. His clan fled from his haunted, emaciated form as he prowled the castle corridors with only his own company to keep. His screams of anguish were often heard echoing along the cold stone corridors, chilling the marrow of any clan member near enough to hear.

Drell… was lonely. No woman would have him, he was sure of that; his hideous appearance meant he had forever been denied the pleasures of flesh. So, instead, he beseeched the Dark Lord for children. He prayed for eight days and eight nights, denying himself both food and drink, spurred on only by the power of his unholy rites. At the end of it, when he was near dead with hunger, his wish was granted. As he bowed to the floor again, a single, dissonant note sounded throughout the chamber. In that note, new life was brought to La Castillo Vida Negra.

In a single shaft of moonlight, lay two babies. One was wrapped in black velvet and the other in black silk. She was as white and pure as the Glacian snow, except for her bloody red eyes and black lips. His yellow eyes glowed in the gloom of the Nocturan temple. Drell’s joy was clear to everyone in Nocturu; his black eyes glowed with love, for the first time in his life.

Drell named his daughter Selene, after the sound he had heard in the temple. He named his son Crepusculum, or Dusk, in the language of his dark books. However, people took to calling him just Dusk. As the children grew older, they became known across Paxia as The Keepers Of The Night.

The First Council

As the twins reached maturity, they took their places on the Nocturan High Council with their father, the Revenant.

Dawn took on the role of Scion of Art, having proven herself a master adept at every creative challenge Drell had presented her with. She could paint, dance, sing, sculpt and write with enviable skill. Her creations adorned every hall of the castle.

Dusk, on the other hand, became a fearsome warrior and became the Scion of War. His keen tactical mind eclipsed every other in the clan. It was rumoured he had been granted an amount of foresight by the Dark Lord; certainly, he dominated any battlefield with his astonishingly quick reflexes. People all across Paxia, especially the Illuminomancers of Lucian, whispered his name with terror, “Dusk, scourge of the Light.” The name pleased him.

The fourth and final member of the council was a mysterious, waiflike man known as Lydon. He was the Scion of Data, and rightly so, for his control of the dark spells and knowledge of their books rivalled even Drell’s. He guarded the archives of knowledge jealously, hoarding the most powerful spell books in a secret room that only the Council knew of. Lydon was not the most powerful spellcaster in Nocturu; however, he made up for his lack of strength with incredible mental agility. He made the most convincing trick and glamour spells; he had an unnerving skill for discovering a magic user’s weaknesses in a few seconds; he could worm into another’s mind in seconds and take control of their actions. In short, he was invaluable to Drell in battle.

Outside of the council room, however, Drell disliked Lydon. His naked desire for power unnerved Drell, as did his “overfamiliar” attitude to Dawn. He kept his feelings from his children and voiced them only to Noctros, his closest companion.
