The purpose of special titles on these forums is, as you said, a reward for helpful, constructive, and friendly behavior and perks are awarded accordingly. As for "ranks" among members, there are several issues with that concept. First of all, a ranking system in and of itself is superfluous since the way a member is judged is not based on how many posts he has or how long he has been on the forums. Quality of posts and good conduct is held in high esteem and, once again, those who deserve such titles will inevitably receive a title along with custom avatar privileges. With that being said, a forum member who has regularly posted for seven years, let's say, is not in any shape or form better than a member who has just joined in the past year. This eliminates the need for a "ranking" system.
