*utters something in phyrexian, then clears throat* If I am allowed to post here, I think science fiction woud be good, since there are few of those here, and it would be intresting to see what us, writters who focus so much on medieval fantasy, can accomplish on such an alien genre as science fiction

I echo Mort's sentiments. Since most write medieval, it would be an interesting change.

That said, i voted for Mystery, because they seem like a challenge somewhat to write, can fit any genre, and are generally fun to read. Not saying I could effectively write one but whatever...

I voted for fairytales. I would really want to see a fairytale contest going on. It's easy to write one, but hard to write one well, it's well known and universally loved, plus it draws a crowd.

 I would have to go with Modern Fantasy. Much as I like Medieval and sy-fi, I feel this gene is somewhat ignored because no one likes it- as the charm of olden days is no longer a crutch- and it would be interesting to see the results.

 Fairytales are stories that are told in the real world, with real world-ish situations, but include otherworldly details and characters. I fairytale MUST have certain things in it for it to be a fairytale.

They include:
Royalty as a prominent feature
Otherworldly characters
Magic
Defined good guy and bad guy
The happily ever after concept
Even if it is subtle, commentary on social norms
Animals that can interact with people, but not anthropomorphosised.
The setting, though is real world-ish, still has an aspect of the "In a land far far away"
There is always a quest or set of quests to be completed by the main character.

Another thing that defines a fairytale from legends, folklore, etc, is the appearance of sets of three. Fairytales must have these. Three quests, three sisters, three brothers, three kingdoms...


This is a fairytale. It matters not if it is Disneyfied or Grimm. Cultures have had fairytales long before Italy and Europe "published" them. As a matter of fact, Yeh-Shen was Cinderella, long before Cinderella existed.

Modern Fantasy...could I have a specific example? I'm not sure what's in my mind is accurate. The genre sounds fun though.

 Modern Fantasy is realistic fiction (real world stories, real world issues, made up characters) with a fantasy twist. Vampires and werewolves battling it out in Orlando, Florida in the night. The Television show Grimm. And, though I HATE to mention the series, Twilight. Psionic gifted people in the middle of Manhatten.

 I voted for documentary since I think it would be an extremely interesting concept, trying to WRITE a documentary? I mean really, I didn't even think that was a THING until this. So I had to vote for it, just to see what would happen.

I am thinking of closing this poll this weekend and then talk this over with my staff and set up some ground rules to the "face-off". So if you haven't voted yet, please do.

 My vote goes to sci-fi seeing as it can accomodate most plotholds. Also, there seems to be less of this genre in the world.

So, it would be interesting to see what the writers here can concoct up with so less examples around them.

So yeah, sci-fi.
