I don't really see the purpose of such a system. The forums are not a popularity contest and whether or not a thread or a post is popular reveals nothing about the actual quality of said thread or post.

We actually had a system like that once... I think it's still possible to see some remnants of it if you find an old enough post. It basically added a series of stars to posts that were highly rated by users.

In the long run, it turned out to be a popularity contest, got abused ("I'll rate your thread if you rate mine!"), and was removed for being far more trouble than it was worth. I rather doubt it will return.

I think the main idea of the "Likes" is if someone can't get on to do a full post or if what they wanted to say has been said. Buy maybe like on Facebook: there are no stars/ranking/rating if you like it you just hit Like.

The problem with that is the nature of the forums. To me, the principle goal of this forum and its moderation staff is to foster full-length discussion as opposed to instant messaging. In the latter case, it's more of a back and forth type of deal while, in the case of the former, one can sit down in his or her spare time and contribute. Most of the time, a discussion topic is not going to pick itself up and run away so there is usually ample time. If everything has already been said, there is nothing wrong with a short post with one or two sentences echoing what has already been said. Everybody brings a unique perspective to the table, each post crafted through their own unique prism or so to speak. To this effect, I believe that there can always be something new to be said, even if one is simply qualifying an earlier point but with a unique perspective and worldview.
