The Coldness of War

Prologue

It's Frostval in Lore. And the usual war is going on. The heroes fight against hordes of corpsicles and frost wraiths that surround the town of BattleOn. The townspeople are hiding indoors as a few of the frosty undead reach the town, but they are easily disposed of by Yulgar, Blackhawke, and the guardians.

"Doesn't the army seem a lot bigger than usual?" Yulgar asked Blackhawke after destroying a corpsicle with his hammer.

Snow started falling and the temperature lowered.

"I can't tell," Blackhawke answered, "but it's colder than usual."

Then, they saw a figure walking into town. The figure wore a knight's armor and helmet. But, it was icy blue.

"Is that...?" a guardian said.

"I believe so," another replied.

Everything around Lord Arrgthas in a wide radius started freezing as he walked to the center of town. A guardian ran toward him, blade raised, but he froze before he even got ten feet near Arrgthas.

Lord Arrgthas held a peculiar blade but Yulgar recognized it immediately, for he had forged it.

"He's got the Ice Claymore!" Yulgar yelled.

"Indeed!" Lord Arrgthas said to him. He had a cold voice that chilled anybody who heard it. It was a strong voice despite sounding as if he was hundreds of years old; a deep, raspy voice. "But I not only have the Ice Claymore. I hold within my power, the Cryonomicon(eggnoginomicon), and the Elemental Orb of Ice!"

"What?! How?!"

"Enough talk! I have frozen your "heroes". Though, I wouldn't call them heroes if they were frozen so easily... Now! You shall freeze."

He summoned the orb and held it up. A very strong gust of icy cold wind blew through the town, freezing everything.

A cloud of shadows appear in front of him.

"Nicely done, Arrgthas," said a voice that came from the shadows.

"Thank you, my lord," Arrgthas bowed to the shadows and they faded away. He turned and walked out of the town, passing the frozen heroes. "To the Northlands!"

Here's the bio of my character, Tora Rast. Just scroll down until you find Tora Rast.

And also the bio for a character in the story that's introduced in this chapter. Tim Wiley. Just scroll down to find Legendium's Tim Wiley.

I just don't want to have to describe how they look or their personalities.

Chapter One

Tora sat on the edge of the Tree of Kings. A phoenix perched next to him on a small, stray branch.

"What's new in the world of Lore, phoenix?" Tora asked it.

"The town of BattleOn and its inhabitants have been frozen by Lord Arrgthas."

"What?!" He jumped up to his feet.

"Not only that, he also wields the Ice Claymore. And he holds the power of the Cryonomicon and the Elemental Orb of Ice."

"What?! Why didn't you tell me before?!"

"You didn't ask."

"Yeah, but that's very important information that you should have told me before I had to ask! I've got to tell the Nameless King!"

He ran into the castle with the phoenix flying behind him. He ran through the castle looking into every room, looking for the Nameless King. He stopped and leaned against the wall, exhausted and panting.

"Why don't you check the throne room?" the phoenix suggested.

"Ah," Tora panted, "Dang it. Why didn't I think of that first?"

"I don't know. I can't read your mind."

Tora looked at the phoenix.

"What?"

Tora continued to run to the throne room, where he saw large flames around the throne.

"Nameless... King!" Tora said between breaths.

"What is it?!" the Nameless King asked as the flames died down.

Tora caught his breath and continued, "Lord Arrgthas has frozen the town of BattleOn! He also has the Ice Claymore, Cryonomicon, and the Elemental Orb of Ice."

"WHAT?!?!" the flames burst out as he yelled. "That damned lich king. Though, I wouldn't call him a 'king' at all. He is but a serf compared to my power."

"Weeeell," Tora said, shrugging, "with the Ice Claymore, Cryonomicon, and Elemental Orb of Ice, your more like a knight compared to him.

"You take that back!" The Nameless King stood and pointed his fiery blade at Tora.

"Okay okay," Tora held up his hands, "I take it back."

The Nameless King sat back down and continued to talk, "I'll get Geldar to fly you and Tim Wiley to BattleOn to survey the situation."

"Yes, my king." Tora bowed and left the room.

Weapon in hand, Tora jumped down from Geldar's back onto the ice that now covered the town of BattleOn. Falling behind him was Tim Wiley, the fiery summoner. Tora looked around at the frozen, cold town. The place was also covered in snow. He lifted his blade and stabbed the ground as strong as he could, but nothing happened; no cracks, chips, scrapes, or dents.

"This is some weird ice," Tora said to Tim over his shoulder, "I can't break it."

Tim pointed his staff as one of the buildings. There was a small explosion of fire where he was pointing. When the smoke cleared, they could see that it did nothing.

"So it is," Tim said, lowering his staff, "this must be the power of the Ice Orb and the Cryonomicon."

Geldar flew away as they heard the sound of rushing hooves on the ice. They turned toward the south of town as a group of Guardian Horsemen came rushing toward them. They surrounded the two with drawn swords.

"Who are you?!" one of the guardians demanded.

"Sir Tora Rast and Sir Tim Wiley!" Tora answered, "We are knights under the Nameless King of the Tree of Kings in Alnaphar!"

"What are you doing here?!"

"The Nameless King sent us here to survey the situation."

"You should come with us to Swordhaven then. King Alteon's lords will fill you in on the situation."

Chapter Two

Tora and Tim rode on extra horses the guardians had on there way to SwordHaven. Everything they passed and even the ground was frozen. An extent of Lord Arrgthas' power. Multiple times, Tora would jump down from his horse to use Sanctum Strike on a few trees; nothing happened to the trees.

"Damn!" Tora would yell, "Everything is frozen with that magic ice!"

It was close to midnight when they had to stop for the night. They set up camp off to the side of the road. Tim made a fire and they started cooking some food while Tora went into the woods to explore. Everything was frozen, no matter how deep he went.

After a while of walking, he came upon a large, frozen lake. He saw a faint light in the middle of the lake. He started to walk toward it. As he got closer, he could see it was a fire. When he reached it he found that there was a girl around his age (so he thinks now) lying by the fire. She wore a red tunic dress with a sleeveless right arm and a long sleeved left arm. She also wore different colored, skinny boots. Her long, wavy, white hair was put up in a ponytail. Then, he noticed her icy blue skin and pointed ears. An Ice Elf, he thought. He noticed and was really interested in the strange, orange-glowing marks of her right bicep.

Then he noticed she had something in her arms. He decided he would see what it was. He crouched beside her and admired her beautiful, flawless face; her cute cheekbones. He then carefully pinched what was in her arms and slowly pulled it out. She didn't budge; didn't make a sound. Tora was holding his breath.

He finally pulled it out of her arms and was able to examine it in the fire's light. It was a red book with a gold frame and an orange circle in the middle of the cover. The circle was outlined with the same gold. He opened it to the first page to find it was written in a different language, though a language he was quite fluent in: Fire Elf. He place his sword down beside him and started reading it.

He didn't stop reading it. As he read further, he found that it wasn't only written in Fire Elf, but in other languages like: Fire Mantiks, Magman, Djinn, and Draconic. All of which he was also quite fluent in, for all of those races related to fire.

The book was filled with the history of Pyromancy and fire. It also had powerful fire spells and incantations in it. He began to have suspicions about this strange book. He thought he knew what book it was, but he shook it off. How could a book like that be in the hands of a simple Ice Elf girl? There was no way.

He read on, too absorbed in the book to notice that hours passed and the sun was starting to come up. He was also too absorbed in it that he didn't notice the Ice Elf girl awaken and see him reading the book.

"My Pyronomicon!" she yelled.

"What?" Tora looked up from the book.

The girl tackled him over and was now on top of him. He looked into her fiery orange eyes. "What?"

She hopped off of him and grabbed back the book. "This is mine!"

"The Pyronomicon is no one's!"

"No! It's mine!"

"Okay okay! Just calm down. Who are you?"

"My name is Akara."

Tora stood up and picked up his blade. "What are you doing with it though?"

"I found it in a cave," Akara said, looking up at him, "I was somehow able to read it even though I never learned those languages."

"Hm." Then he noticed the fire. He realized it never went out. And there was no fire wood for it to burn on. "Did you make that fire?"

"Yeah," Akara said, smiling, "It's a magical fire. I made it."

"Remarkable," Tora said. He crouched down in front of her and looked into her eyes again. Partially because he wanted her attention, but mostly just to look at them. "For an Ice Elf to understand fire-related languages and to be able to learn and use fire magic."

She started blushing, staring at him. Tora thought that was cute.

"I must say," he continued, "you are very beautiful."

She turned away as her face reddened even more. Tora smiled.

He stood and looked around.

"Where are you headed to, Akara?"

"I was heading to Swordhaven," she replied.

Tora looked at her, "Me too. You can come with me. It's dangerous to be traveling alone, what with this whole ice thing happening. Even if you do have the Pyronomicon."

"Okay." Tora helped her up and they started for the camp site. When they arrived, they found the area empty and the horses gone.

"What?!" Tora yelled, running to the road and looking down it, "They left me! Did they not realize I was gone?! I'm gonna kill Tim!"

He returned to Akara, "I guess we're gonna have to walk."

"I don't mind," Akara said.

They started their walk to Swordhaven with an unknown follower hiding behind the trees and bushes.

Chapter Three

Lord Arrgthas approached the castle of Aisha the ice drake. He laughed at the size of it. It wasn't nearly as large as his. And the guards were weak. He easily took them out with no more than one strike each. He entered the castle and was immediately met by a small group of ice elves.

"Queen Aisha has been waiting for your arrival," the head of the group said.

"Good," Arrgthas said, "she should be."

The group of ice elves escorted Lord Arrgthas to Aisha's throne room.

"Lord Arrgthas," Queen Aisha said, standing from her throne, "it's good to see you again. After so many years."

"I'm not here for a social visit, Aisha," Lord Arrgthas said, "I wish to form an alliance with you and your ice elves and dragons. If you refuse I will destroy your castle."

"That's Queen Aisha to you! And I wanted to form an alliance with you."

"Very good. One of my spies has told me that one of your ice elves has the Pyronomicon. And she's befriended Tora Rast. I believe her name is Akara."

"WHAT?! That traitor!"

"I'm hoping you can deal with her. And maybe Rast while you're at it as well."

"Don't worry... I will."

Chapter Four

"It's getting colder," Tora said as they walked.

"Really?" Akara asked, "I can't tell."

"Of course you can't. You're an Ice Elf."

Tora felt a sudden surge of energy from the Kathedral Blade: his sword he found in an abandoned cathedral. It was a straight-edge, long, broadsword with faintly glowing runes on the sides of the blades that only he could read. He lifted the blade and saw the runes glowing brighter. He stopped.

"What is it?" Akara asked.

"Something's here. Something... cold and... unholy," Tora said frighteningly.

Akara moved away from the trees to the center of the road. Tora looked around, blade raised.

"Frost Wraith!" he yelled as one dashed out from behind the trees in front of him. It slashed its claws at him but he deflected it with his sword.

The air became extremely cold. Around the Frost Wraith, ice shards appeared. They flew toward Tora. He quickly blasted fire and melted the ice shards. When the fire cleared he found the wraith rushing toward him. It slashed him across his chest. Tora grunted and lifted his blade above his head with it pointed at the wraith. He rushed the wraith and stabbed it in the eye. Except for some icicles on the ground which had covered it, it completely faded away from the world of the living.

"Through the eye: That's the only way to re-kill a Frost Wraith. Ah," Tora grunted, looking down at his wound, "It ruined my long-coat." Tora wore a white, long-sleeve long-coat with a flipped up collar and red lining.

"You're hurt!" Akara said, running to him, "We need to get to Swordhaven fast. You need medical attention!"

"No I don't" He placed his free hand over his wound and light shined from under his hand. Akara watched in awe. The light faded away and he moved his hand. The cuts were gone.

"Wow! How did you do that?!"

"The Kathedral Blade," he said lifting his sword. The runes were back to their faint glowing. "It gave me my healing ability."

"Awesome!" She jumped. "Let's hurry and get to Swordhaven."

They continued to walk down the road.

"So, you're a Pyromancer Paladin? A Pyroladin!"

Tora looked at her, "That's brilliant."

Chapter Five

"Finally!" Tora said as he and Akara approached the wall around Swordhaven. The wall around Swordhaven was the first unfrozen thing they had seen for days. The water in the moat was frozen though, so Tora was able to walk across it to the closed drawbridge.

They had traveled two more days by foot after the frost wraith incident. They were exhausted. Tora banged on the drawbridge with the butt of his sword's handle.

"Open up!"

"Who goes there?!" Tora backed up to see a guard at the guard's post at the top of the wall above the drawbridge.

"Sir Tora Rast, knight under the Nameless King of the Tree of Kings in Alnaphar!"

"Who's the girl?!"

"Akara, an escaped Ice Elf of Queen Aisha!"

"Of what importance are you here?!"

"Hand me the Pyronomicon," Tora said to Akara. She pulled it out and handed it to him and he held it up, "To help!"

The guard saw the book and was shocked, "Is that the...?!"

"Yes! The Pyronomicon!"

"Lower the drawbridge!"

Tora and Akara stepped aside as the drawbridge slowly lowered. Behind the drawbridge was Tim Wiley, the fiery summoner that accompanied Tora to BattleOn.

"What took you so long?!" Tim asked, arms crossed.

"You jack wad!" Tora yelled, running toward Tim, "Why did you leave me?!"

Tora swung his blade at Tim but Tim swiftly moved out of the way.

"Stop acting rash," Tim said.

"You left me! I could have freeze to death!”

"Well, you didn't."

"It's the principle I'm angry about: You just leaving me!"

"That's behind us now. We need to see the king." Tim turned around and began to walk toward the castle.

"Come on, Akara." Tora began after Tim and Akara ran to catch up to Tora.

"Who's that?" she asked.

"Tim Wiley. He's a fellow knight of mine under the Nameless King at Alnaphar."

"Ah, I see. Do I have to give the Pyronomicon to the king?"

"Most likely. I'm so glad Swordhaven isn't frozen."

As they approached the castle, the draw-bridge lowered. Inside, they were escorted by three knights to the door of the throne room. They entered.

"Ah, it's so good to see you again, Jexorin Rast."

Chapter Six

"Um, Queen Brittany?" Tim said, a bit confused, "This is Tora Rast. Not Jexorin."

"Jexorin Rast is my father," Tora said.

"Oh? I'm sorry," Queen Brittany said, "You just look so much like him."

"Oh I do? I wouldn't know."

"That's right. I heard of his death years ago. A great hero he was."

"Yeah, I've heard stories. Like his defeating of Sepulchure."

"Yes, that was a great battle."

She stood form her throne and walked to her right.

"Come see."

Tora, Tim, and Akara walked to where she was. They stood in front of a mural of two people on a dark hill. It was of Sepulchure the DoomKnight lying on the ground. The other was standing over him with a sword pointed at Sepulchure's throat. That person was Jexorin, Tora's father. He had long, pale turquoise hair, just like Tora. He wore no armor. Only simple cloth and a long-coat that matched Tora's.

"Wow!" Akara said in awe.

"That long-coat," Queen Brittany said to Tora, "is the very same one that you wear now."

"Tora," Tim said, "That sword your father has in the mural. It's the Kathedral Blade."

"What?!" Tora looked closely at the sword in the mural. It was the Kathedral Blade. He lifted his blade up to the one in the mural.

"Ah yes," Queen Brittany said, remembering, "The Kathedral Blade was the only blade that could vanquish Sepulcher. Other than his own sword."

They admired it longer until Brittany spoke again.

"Oh that's right," she said, "you three came to deliver something?"

"Oh yeah," Tora said.

"Here," Akara said. She pulled out the Pyronomicon and handed it to the queen.

"I don't believe this!" Brittany said, "I thought this was destroyed by Warlic years ago!"

"That's right," Tim confirmed, "It would have had to be recreated somehow. But I highly doubt anyone or anything could have the power to recreate it other than the original creator or creators."

"I didn't destroy it!"

They spun around to see Warlic in the doorway. He wore his blue robes like always. He had a longish beard. He still carried his staff and orb.

"Warlic!"

"What did you do with it then?" Brittany asked.

"I teleported it to a random location on Lore. It's far too powerful to be destroyed. Apparently I teleported it to the cave this beautiful ice elf found it in."

Akara giggled and blushed.

"Well, it's a good thing that she found it," Tim said, "And it's also a good thing that Tora found her."

"Now we have a very powerful asset to our army," Queen Brittany said, "Now we just need a warrior to keep it for battle. Tora, will you?"

"I will," Tora said, "but it won't be enough when we face Lord Arrgthas himself. Remember: he not only has the Cryonomicon, he also has the Ice Claymore and the Elemental Orb of Ice."

"Well," Akara said, "you have the Kathedral Blade. That might do it for countering the Ice Claymore."

"Now all we need is something to counter the orb," Tim said, "That would be the Elemental Orb of Fire."

It was Warlic that spoke next.

"I know where that is."

Chapter Seven

Lord Arrgthas' throne room was large and completely made of ice. The walls were rough, jagged, and dented. Except for the wall behind the throne which was smooth and flat and shiny. There was a large pillar in the center that went from the floor to the ceiling. The throne was carved into the pillar facing the back wall.

Now, Lord Arrgthas sat in his throne watching the what was on the wall. It was Tora, Akara, Tim, Warlic, and Queen Brittany riding on a fire dragon to Drakonnan's frozen lair. He laughed.

"Time to get rid of them once and for all."

Tora, Akara, Tim, Warlic, and Queen Brittany stood at the edge of the entrance to Drakonnan's lair. Even here, a volcano, was frozen completely and covered in snow.

"So the Elemental Orb of Fire is in there?" Tora asked.

"I'm certain of it," Warlic replied, "There's no better place to keep it; guarded by Drakonnan."

"Drakonnan is in there?!" Tim sputtered.

"Yes. But he had a change of heart when he had to fight alongside Jexorin to defeat me."

"You fought against my father?" Tora questioned.

Warlic sighed, "Yes. But that was when a part of me revealed itself that I don't ever want to happen again. You can read more about it in some of the queen's tomes."

"Yes," Queen Brittany said, "that was also a great battle."

"Well," Tora said, looking into the darkness of the lair, "I guess I'm going in."

"I'm going with you," Akara said, standing beside him.

"As am I," Tim added, standing on the other side of him.

The queen and Warlic watched as the darkness engulfed the trio as they entered the lair.

"Can we really trust Drakonnan to give the orb to them?" Queen Brittany asked Warlic.

"Of course not," Warlic scoffed, "He was driven too mad as Xan's apprentice. You can go, my queen. But I'm not going to leave them with that madman."

"With the three of them together, they can handle it."

"Very well."

In silence, the trio walked through the icy cave that was Drakonnan's lair. They checked every room they came upon, slowly getting closer to the most possible place the orb could be: the throne room.

"Drakonnan and the orb are most likely in the throne room," Tim said

"Yes," Tora said, "but we should check every other room to be sure."

"I expected fiery minions," Akara said.

"Me too," Tora and Tim said at the same time.

It took a while, but they finally reached the door to the throne room. They stood, staring at the door for a while.

"Well," Tim said, stepping back, "Heroes first."

Tora gripped his sword tighter as it surged with energy. It could sense the evil behind the door. Tora lifted his blade and looked at the bright-glowing runes.

Tora stepped forward, lifted his foot and kicked the door open. The room was the only place unfrozen due to the power of the Fire Orb. It was large, red a cavernous; and empty. To the right was a cliff that dropped down to a river of lava.

Tora stepped in and the door swung shut behind him. He spun around. He could hear Tim and Akara yelling from the other side. He heard laughing echoing around the room. He slowly turned around but still saw no one.

"SHOW YOURSELF!!!!!" Tora yelled.

A blast of lave came from the lake and started after Tora. And aura came from the Kathedral Blade as Tora lifted it to deflect the lava. The aura was like a force field to better deflect the lava.

The lave stopped and appeared Drakonnan with his mask on.

"You are," Drakonnan said, disdainfully, "Jexorin Rast's son."

"That's right," Tora replied.

"That was a statement, not a question. I shall kill you."

"No you won't."

"WE'LL SEE ABOUT THAT!!!!!!" Drakonnan blasted fire at Tora. Tora just deflected the fire with his long-coat.

"Fire won't do the job," Tora laughed.

Drakonnan looked up. Tora did too to see large, pointed rocks above him falling fast. He dove to the side. Drakonnan grabbed his neck and lifted him up.

"You shall die like your father did," Drakonnan growled.

"You killed him?"
