Greetings to you, ladies, gentlemen, and assorted others! I am here to inform you of a useful communication tool that you may wish to take advantage of! There is this thing, you see, called IRC, which stands for Internet Relay Chat, which allows multiple people to enter a single chatroom and talk with each other in real time! It's been around since forever, and is still widely used by quite a few internet denizens. The advantage is that you can have a single location that you join, and therefore need not do such annoyingly specific things as trading IM contact information to twenty different people in hopes of being able to maybe talk to one or two of them once in a blue moon. I, and the rest of the RP staff, highly recommend that you make use of this system to speed communication amongst your fellow RPers and also with us! So let's get you started. Step 1: Acquire an IRC Client The first thing you need in order to access IRC is an IRC client of some sort. You can find one simply and easily by googling "IRC Client." To make things simpler, however, I will provide you links to a few popular ones. The simplest and quickest ways to get going are browser-based clients such as mibbit and the Caelestia.net Webchat. They do, however, run in your browser, and thus are limited in power and also utility. It's also really easy to accidentally close the page. On the other hand, because they run in your browser, they can usually bypass firewalls that might block a dedicated client. mIRC is a powerful and popular dedicated client with a robust scripting language and fairly large userbase. It also has a rather confusing interface and can be difficult to make work properly, and occasionally wants you to register it. Ryu Viranesh uses mIRC. IceChat is another dedicated IRC Client with some robust features and a rather simple to use interface. This is what TormentedDragon and superjars use. XChat: XChat is yet another medium for using IRC. It has an easy interface with some customizable options for fonts and colours and highlights. Step 2: Set up your client to access our network and channel. Once you have a client, you need to set it up so that it will log into the Caelestia network and go to the channel of your choice. This process is generally similar across all clients, with small differences in implementation here and there. The network used by AE is caelestia.net. For those of you more familiar with IRC, the round-robin access is irc.caelestia.net, which will connect to one of the three servers. If you want to connect to a specific server, use midgard.caelestia.net, darkstar.caelestia.net, or worldpool.caelestia.net. The official channel for the RP boards is #RPBoards. Client specific instructions follow: Cael-Webchat: This is likely the easiest way to access the network, although the interface itself is somewhat clunky. Simply navigate to Caelestia.net and then select "Webchat" from the sidebar to the left. Click the "Webchat" button located to the right of the screen and it will pop-out in another window. Simply enter your desired Nickname and then type #RPBoards into the Autojoin tab. Click "Chat Now" and you will be connected to Caelestia! Mibbit: The Mibbit website has instructions on how to use its client. While not necessary to use the service, you will want to set up an account with mibbit, during which you can set up auto-connection options. This will make future connections as simple as logging into mibbit. For the server field, use irc.caelestia.net, and for the channel use #RPBoards. If you connect to mibbit chat without autoconnection options set up, you will want to click the "server" link next to the drop-down menu in the second frame, then type in "irc.caelestia.net" in the field that comes up. Pick a nick, and for channel use #RPBoards mIRC: Upon opening mIRC, you will greeted by a small window that will welcome you to the client. After a moment click "Continue" and proceed to the next small window, which will tell you how many days you've been using the client and recommend that you Register it. Ryu has done so, but you may ignore this and continue on, regardless of how many days you've been using it. Next, the Server window will pop up. Enter your desired Nickname, an Alternative Nickname, a Name (can literally be anything) and an Email. Then click the Server tab on the left and then select "Add", entering one of the server address enumerated above. Leave everything else alone and click "Ok" (This will save if it is the only server that you use). Now click "Connect" and you should connect to Caelestia. Then type "/join #RPBoards", without the quotes obviously, and you will be in our channel. IceChat: On opening IceChat, you will not be connected to any server. IceChat comes with many IRC servers already configured, but caelestia is not one of them. Look to the bottom left of the IceChat window, and you will find a button that says "Add." Click this to add a new server. In the dialog box that pops up, type in irc.caelestia.net in Server Name field, and pick a nick name to use. Under the "Extra Settings" tab, you can tick the option to Connect on Startup, in which case Icechat will autoconnect to caelestia when you open it. If you do not tick this, you will need to select the server from the list on the left, and then click the "connect" button whenever you wish to connect to caelestia. Under the Autojoin tab, you can set the server up to automatically join channels on connection. Type in #RPBoards in the channel field, then click "add" to add it to the autojoin list. XChat: You will first give your Nickname and alternative nicknames in case yours is already taken. Also give your username and other info at your own discretion. Then press "+ ADD" which should create a new network. Select this network and press EDIT, which is located 2 buttons under "+ADD". In the window that this opens, press "+ADD" there to add the new server. Select this new server, press edit, and type in: irc.caelestia.net There are a few options under there that you can set up as you wish. Finally, type the channels you wish to join when you join the server. For the RP channel, type in #RPBoards. You can set up more than one channel if you wish by putting a comma and space between channels. Each client has multiple other features that you can discover through their websites, asking other users, and experimentation. I hope this has been helpful, and hope to see you in #RPBoards!
