Spent some time brainstorming, came up with this.
A young girl who had been born with fox ears and a tail. Her parents abandoned her, she was raised in an orphanage. She was always teased by her fellow orphans, bullied by some. She was a quiet, peaceful one, until one day the mean ones stole a knife from the kitchen and threatened to cut off her tail. Of course, they were children, so they had no idea about what they were doing. The girl completely freaked out and struggled, but they held her down and she watched the knife get closer to her tail. Then, with sudden strength, she wrenched her arm free, twisting the arm of the one who held her, and instinctively punched the one with the knife hard, in the throat, crushing his windpipe and dooming him to a slow and painful death. In addition, her tail slips out and scythes around her, breaking the legs of some of the kids. She was horrified at what she had done, and ran away from the orphanage.
She spent most of her childhood on the streets after that, scrounging for food and barely managing to sustain herself, almost starving sometimes. Every night, she had nightmares of the day she killed that boy, and crippled several others. She felt miserable, and oftentimes considered just releasing her hold on life, dismal as it was. One day, she was on the street looking for the meal for that day, when she noticed a man being beaten and mugged in an alleyway. She ran over to him, and with a punch to the armpit, killed him. Suddenly realizing what she had done, she ran away again, without even noticing the man she had saved.
Then the day the portal was opened and closed, a leigon of Nulgath's minions stormed through the streets. It was pure chaos, as the void knights, led by a Void reaper, laid waste to most of the town. The local garrison could barely hold on, and nearly crumbled until a large contingent of knights bolstered their ranks, but it was still a grim battle. The girl, not completely understanding what was happening, only knew that danger was afoot. She watched fearfully, in hiding, as the Void Reaper gave the orders to destroy the town, then, not entirely knowing what she was doing, took two knives from a fallen soldier's belt, and deftly threw them. One pierced the gem mounted on his scythe; the other pierced his face, instantly killing him. This completely demoralized Nulgath's forces, having lost their commander, and the minions had no cohesion, which allowed the knights to take back the city and exterminate the rest of them.
Nobody ever clearly saw how the Void Reaper had died, and it was eventually dedicated to a miracle. Several days later, however, the girl was approached by a man representing an elite force specifically created to combat the Dark Lord's forces. The man explained that she had the ability to identify lethal points on any monster or human being, and if she was determined or scared enough, could drudge up the power necessary to deal a lethal blow. He had no explanation for her tail and ears, however. She was offered membership and accepted, though mainly due to the reason that she had nowhere else to go anyways.
