Instead of nerfing strength skills to death, why not just implement a skill core that will take away their edge? Thus, if everyone chooses to be a str merc, then everyone ELSE can have a reliable way to stop them. Here's my idea:

Choke Chain:
Normal strike.* Effect applies regardless of if strike connects. Can only be used once per battle. This skill has no warmup. Deadly Aim is not affected by this core.** For your opponents next two moves, any skill dealing a % extra damage will have 50% (rounded up) of that damage bonus reflected back on them. This damage reflection can take their HP no lower than 1.

Example: If a mercenary used max berzerker with a +36 sword while choke chain is active, 17 of the 33 bonus damage would be subtracted directly from their HP, and the attack would only do +16 in bonus damage.

This would not completely ruin double strike, berz, mass, etc. It would just discourage builds that rely on a maxed offensive skill and nothing else. Berzerker is still perfectly useful, you just have to find a way to survive another 2 turns until you can use it. This would also encourage players to move away from these builds by taking away the attractive possibility of 2 or 3 turn kills. Additionally, even if the debuff is active the skills would still be helpful to finish off an opponent.

Any suggestion to tweak the effect to make it more balanced are welcome.

*Should this core be castable using a sidearm or aux?
**This isn't set in stone either. My reasoning is that because its a passive, and ALL mages rely on it, not just strength ones, it wouldn't really be reasonable for the debuff to apply to that.

What "debuff" do you mean?

Oh ok.

^Thats just a blatant misuse of terminology. Changed to "effect."

Does it work on Massacre?

I'm reluctant to say no, because then I will be specifically targeting a few skills in only 2 or 3 classes.

Also, I'm reluctant to say yes because it would make max-massacre builds pretty much unusable.

Hm...this will take some thought. Maybe the effect could split- 50% damage reflecting back and 50% added to their attack? Thus these skills would have their effect weakened but would still be useful against a somewhat-near-death player.

Thats probably better. Change included in original post.

Supported, But not enough OP Core to nerf the str builds like to hit maximum 3 with them :) well balanced nerf i mean.

I wouldn't call it a way to nerf strength builds since you HAVE to use this for the nerf. Really it's just a counter and an easy one to avoid at that. But I do like the concept.

It is a bit too situational for a skill core. I would use it a lot however, because it would be very effective against massacre. I think it will be interesting in battles.

Why can't skill cores be situational? If the game is going to have an OP build reign supreme for a couple weeks its worth 7000 credits to have a way to deal with that specifically. I've never liked the idea of using stat requirements to "nerf" a skill because that also limits creative and balanced uses of the skill. Adding a skill core more or less specifically targeting a rampantly abused build is a much neater way to deal with the problem.
