It would seem as if no one really like sci-fi settings on other RPing boards. But considering some fans of AE like MechQuest, I decided "why not"?

I'm not going for mechs like in MechQuest. I mean mechs are cool and all, and they'd surely be in the RP, but I'm not planning on having them being the center of attention.

Ideas I have so far are:
We're a covert team made up of various individuals (soldiers, assassins, bounty hunters, mercenaries, etc) and our goal is... well I don't have a good story yet, but I'm working on it. Anyway, we have our own cruiser, and inside is a hanger with our own personal starfighters; these starfighters can 'transform' into mechs. But generally we're a specialized ground force. Expect a lot of squad-based infiltration and combat, some space battles, and mech-to-mech combat.

Ideas, suggestions, whatever, please shoot.

I actually was debating between Aurora or a RP I was going to call Apocalypse. It would've been Sci-Fi, but in a deteriorated, every-apocalypse-in-one kind of way.

But Aurora won over.

Also, haven't you already got a RP up and running? Shouldn't you be concentrating on that?

I do have a RP up, but not running. Assuming it gets more interest, I will host it, but at the moment it has seen little to no activity. This thread is more or less a planning phase for when I do want to host it, or if someone else wanted to.

Also I like your idea of a deteriorated universe. Dare I say that I was trying to come up with something similar (although not an apocalypse, just a universe that no longer has government, it's a free-for-all where criminal organizations run rampant).

What would it have been about?

EDIT: I was thinking of something along the lines of a massive galactic explosion that destroyed millions of planets, eradicated whole species, etc. If you divided the galaxy up into 4 quadrants, with quadrant 1 starting in the top-left, 2 in top-right, 3 in bottom-right, and 4 in bottom-left, the explosion occurred somewhere in quadrant 3. So the only remaining safe zones are quadrant's 1, and partially 2 and 4. Coincidentally, quadrant 1 was the least-stable in terms of governmental control, and now with the devastation government has completely been abolished. Mercenary groups now control the planets and space stations, and it's a free-for-all, wild-west type of era.

There would actually be 8 sections in an area like that, since you'd have to look at it from the side and the top as well for length and depth. Spaaaaaace. Not to mention most galaxies spin. And they're HUGE.

We'll imagine that teleportation is like an interplanetary plane travel on Earth and spaceship travel is like interplanetary car travel. You can get there by planet-hopping, but that is like walking and it takes a really long time. Then you have the traditional transportation on the planets themselves.

Sadly the scale of that is REALLY LARGE so we'll have to really cut down on what our characters can actually explore.

Nonsense, it's still doable. Mass Effect is huge, yet they all use the same interstellar currency, vehicles, and weapons. Although that's more out of reason than purpose (it's just not reasonable to create dozens of vehicles for each separate race).

Perhaps it could take place in a single solar system, with multiple habitable planets...?

I've actually been thinking of something else. Forget any sort of intergalactic armies, or commando squads, or anything like that.

I was thinking about the dark, criminal underworld of the galaxy. Like, a roleplay focusing on thugs, mercenaries, slavers, drugs, gangsters, assassins, and other criminals. Jabba the Hutt and his organization from Star Wars is a prime example of it, with Grido and Han Solo. Or Omega from Mass Effect, with Aria T'loak and her mercenary bands.

While playing as criminals is a cool sounding idea, I think the commando squad idea would be more fun and easier to condense to a more manageable scale. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like galactic criminals would be more spatially involved and have a much wider range of complications.

Either way, for any kind of space venture the spatial map problems can be solved. We could theorize a map of a certain section of space as a flat plane, and then add depth to it. For example: Star Trek Online's galactic map. The Star Trek map is not completely flat, when flying starships in the game at warp between star systems there is enough depth to the space to be consistent in a 3-demensional world. There is enough depth to randomly place systems on the 3 coordinates, but not enough as to become overwhelming. We can divide the space into your 4 quadrants and even further subdivide those. Or not, it could be however large you want to manage. Say that there's 3 or 4 solar systems within each quadrant, with each system containing at least 1 life-sustaining planet. That makes a maximum of 12 planets for populations to live on and major interactions to take place. We can limit our characters' missions and explorations to remain within already explored space, the four established quadrants. If we had anywhere between 4-12 life supporting planets established at the beginning of the RolePlay, then within the 4 quadrants there would still be limitless room for expansion and new creative ideas while condensing it in a relatively small area.

That is how I would build the world. And that blueprint is built upon Star Trek, which has little scientific backing. Although this plan has many holes and problems, I believe it would be an appropriate approximate for the purpose of fantastical Role-Playing. TJB, if you don't take a Sci-Fi Roleplay into fruition I will spend the next two months building a world to play in one. Your ideas always inspire me to get my act together on the boards here.

@Vanir: Glad to hear your input. The Commandos do seem pretty awesome, but I can't get away from the dark criminal underworld of galactic mercenaries and bounty hunters.

I've a lot of ideas; one is a superhero roleplay, but those never gain interest for me.

EDIT: But if ANYONE wants to do a superhero roleplay... please, do tell.

I had a good X-Men based superhero roleplay envisioned once. Superheroes haven't really ever taken off in here though.

One based on the Batman universe should be good with little place for godmodding.

Some plot where different Batmans come to one Earth due to some accident.

Oooo, I know! A dark criminal underworld of galactic mercenaries and bounty hunters with superpowers. Two for one!

O.o

Uh... Wait... What?

Galactic mercenaries with superpowers? That's like Anime plot+Sci-figames.

Sounds weird.

That's an odd way to say "Amazing and should be done right away."

It's sort of like biotics from Mass Effect, or the Force from Star Wars, nothing we can't handle. I say it is a good idea to start off.

So... mhm.
