Discussion Link Here: "Flood in the Desert?!" Discussion

This is my first time writing fanfiction for AE, so I'd like all the criticism you can give me.

"Flood in the DESERT?!" was based off of my too-late entry for the release contest that just closed yesterday. I wanted to still give it some use and so I am turning it into this story, with my AQW character as the narrator, in first person. I have it in a separate Google Document, which I have no way of knowing if I am allowed to link to at this moment, so I shall play it safe and leave it as is for the time being.

I will, however, copy and paste my overview in the foreword of this thread as to get a summary of the story.

Overview

Sandsea, the wonderful desert region of Lore, has come across a problem that no one has ever expected would happen: A desert FLOOD?! The sea on the southeastern coast of Sandsea has experienced a strange monsoon season - and Zhoom suspects it's a sign of Chaos soon to come (the finale). With the monsoon roaring, the land off the coast is going through a massive flood, and you, the Hero, must stop it.

You will assist Zhoom in evacuating the flood area, retrieving resources to help the people, and fighting monsters out of the area, all while Zhoom and a group of Sandsea’s best construction workers build a dam to prevent the submerging of the island, Sandsea, and quite possibly the rest of Lore’s mainland.

After the dam’s swift construction, you will quest to find the source of the flood and defeat whatever or whomever comes your way. Only then will the tide be reversed and Sandsea’s peace is restored again.

Chapter updates and notes will be posted here.

C1- Posted. I'll be trying to get chapters in every other week until summer, when I'll have more time to write. It'll be weekly then. This chapter is short, but only because the story is sill in an introductory phase. Comedy was scarce and lame, I apologize. The events look better in my AQW cutscene-esque story imagination. I see my player from a third-person view, despite the first-person story. Feel free to discuss that in the DT (link will always be at the top).

Prologue

Silver Star the 3339th is Lore's Hero. And Lore's Hero is me. Right now, I should be doing something worthwhile but I'm sort of caught up with all our worlds' troubles already.

Yes, worlds. I've adventured and quested through more than just one world, but that's not really my point.

Since I'm all done with my heroic pursuits, I am positively and utterly BORED. I'm missing all my adventuring and questing. So, walking around Battleon with my head hanging in pure disappointment, I had stopped in the middle of my tracks and nearly fell into the town fountain. Good thing I didn't, because I hadn't worn my waterproof underwear that day. Bursts of inspiration had saved me then.

It was a near-Eureka moment. I should go exploring! I had thought, and pulled out my map of Lore that I always had on me. There was more uncharted land than there was found, so I had lots of random areas to choose from. I felt like I needed to really relax rather than stumble through Battleon mindlessly like I was doing earlier. But c'mon! That was so 2.7 seconds ago. Well, for a relaxing trip, the first thing the general public would think of is a nice, romantic getaway in the tropics, and that was exactly what I wanted!

Minus the romantic part.

So I squinted at all the coasts of every piece of land until I found something interesting, all while thinking that I really needed Batista here. He's always talking about exploration, along with self-espressos and Transformers and the like. I don't really remember everything he said because he told me to forget all my worries so I didn't worry much about what he said afterwards. He's a pretty fun guy.

I had been contemplating whether or not I should camp out at the isle south of Oaklore when I glanced over on the left and took a closer gander at Sandsea's southeastern coast, where the land off of it was actually slightly split off from the mainland. It was settled. That was where my mini-vacation would be.

On-location, the site was amazing. It was near the ocean, and therefore, more plantation was rooted in the island. It was incredible, but I had no idea what to mark it down as in my map, and that irritated me to no end.

Recalling that I needed to relax, I sat down at the base of one of the palm trees and pulled myself into a stupor.

Knowing ahead of time that I'd be close to water, at that moment I was wearing my waterproof underwear, so when the looming wave rolled onto the shore and over my head, I was prepared.

And that is where my real story begins.

Chapter One: Flood

The waves carried me only a little ways, as I was pulled from my palm tree at the shore and crashed into another one inland. My previous near-comatose state intensified upon knocking my head and I grew limp, the water dragging my dead-weight body.

Muffled anxious human voices alerted me to wake. Having lots of experience breathing underwater from exploring places like the Natatorium, I was not harmed from the ocean that had encased me earlier.

An elegant stream of water cascaded out of my mouth in pure stereotypical fashion. I stood up, wringing out a handkerchief that had been lying next to me.

Could be useful later on.

I took in my surroundings. The town was very humble, with buildings very much like the inn at the Sandsea oasis, only at a slightly smaller scale. Despite the modesty of the town, anyone could tell these villagers could pack in a party. Children's toys were all over the place, and the weapons and food displayed in stores looked very appealing. However, the thing that stood out the most was that people were huddled in tight groups, all with creased foreheads and frowning mouths that spoke in concerned tones, with others going around giving comforting shoulder pats and soothing words.

Let me just say, what on sand is going on?

As soon as the last drop of water was squeezed out of the handkerchief, someone with pointy ears and an intricate olive green bow came up to me, face set in an almost stern expression that showed everyone he was not one to be messed with.

It also made me want to tickle him to get a reaction. But...better not.

I recognized him as Zhoom, the master tracker and ranger of Sandsea. This half-elf and I have worked together before in the pursuit of taking down Chaos, and his skills and knowledge of Sandsea and its history went to very good use.

"Silver, you came at a good time."

"Thank the ocean for that," I replied.

Unfazed, he said, "I don't believe now is a proper time to give blessings to the ocean spirits. This village out on this island, fittingly named Sandshore, is having trouble because of it."

"How so?"

"Well, just take a closer look around."

Observing the town once again, I realized there were actually large pools of water on the ground, and since we were in a sandy area, that means there was enough water that had been built up to the surface, when it should have gone through the grains of sand. Glancing over my shoulder, I realized the wave that carried me here was only a one of many, slowly but surely approaching the town.

"You mean to say....the desert...is having a FLOOD?" I gasped. In a lower voice, "Who woulda thought?"

"Of course no one had been expecting this, so the town is not sufficiently prepped for it,"

I felt a new task coming, ready to take me out of my boredom.

"Will you help Sandshore?"

Yup. Thought so. A grin broke out on my face and I raised the handkerchief in agreement.

"I'm up for anything you throw at me, Zhoom!"

And indeed I was.
