The Many Trials of
Toric Valgard

Foreword

This is a story that has been in the works for many years. It is world that has been detailed, revised, reworked, and redone entirely. I day-dream about the characters, about the events, about the world and yet it's impossible for me to convey it in the way I'd like. Role plays, short stories, and encyclopedic entries have been written about the world but they've never materialized how I wanted. It is the story of Toric Valgard, a man who sacrifices everything to rescue his only daughter. It is a story about love, betrayal, loss, sacrifice, heartbreak, and finding a meaning to live. This is The Many Trials of Toric Valgard.

Setting

The story takes place in the fictional world of Duran. Duran has four main continents: Argnia, the Badlands, the Northlands, and Elaria. There are countless other lands, but they're not important for this story. These three continents were once connected and a race known as the Shaia inhabited it. The Shaia were near-immortal beings with divine powers. Corruption and a lust for power eventually drove the Shaia mad and many become evil and terrible beings. The Shaia fought for many centuries until only a few remained. They were eventually forced into exile when the First Elves rose to prominence. The Shaia became the 'Lords': divine beings often associated with religion throughout the world. The Icelord (Solicon) rules from his Crystal Spire in the Northlands; the Wraithlord's (Vercyx) exact location is not known; the Darklord (Sidonis) was banished before the First Elves arrived thanks to a cunning plot concocted by the Icelord and the Wraithlord; the Blightlord (Grol) rules a small kingdom in the Badlands.

The First Elves controlled much of Duran, most specifically Argnia, where great cities were built. Many individuals called their dominion the 'Elven Nation'. The Elven Nation would eventually collapse on itself as the Arcane Wars completely divided the Elven race. On one side was the High Elves, who despised dark magic; on the other side was the Dark Elves, who actively experimented with the dark arts. The chaos was only made worse when the Wraithlord unleashed his terrible armies throughout the world. The Wraithlord was defeated, but at a terrible cost. After both wars, the High Elves were forced to flee into the forested region of Elaria, seeking refuge from the Wood Elves. The Dark Elves underwent significant changes and lost their immortality, eventually migrating into a region just south of Elaria. These Dark Elves constructed a large city known as Volthurn, where only Dark Elves may enter.

With the Elven Nation weakened during the Arcane Wars, the race of man began to rise, and after many conflicts established the Reman Empire. The Reman Empire controlled much of Argnia but faced opposition by remnants of the Elven Nation. This Empire would lost for a thousand years before its eventual collapse due to raids by the Badlands and internal conflict. Out of this Empire arose four human kingdoms. Asgeir to the north was ruled by the Varan Kingdom; the kingdom of Westmarch was founded in the west; Sulture was founded in the south; the remnants of the Empire remained in Remes, where they developed an economical center for trade.

The Badlands had never been ruled. The Orcish tribes there have fought for as long as they have existed, attempting to keep a firm grasp over their people. Warchiefs rise, but warchiefs fall, and no single orc has ever united the land. Many other beast-races live in the Badlands, and it is perhaps the most dangerous region on Duran.
