Battleon Sorceress

Hello all,

I have a very important question for you -- what is the most epic / memorable / your favorite battle in AQ3D? Though the game is still relatively young, there have already been some crazy awesome battles. It can be from any zone, any battle... but it must be mind-blowingly cool!

Please reply here with your answers, and I will check back over the course of the week.

Thank you, and Battle On!

Fixed the title. //D.U.M

Constructive & Helpful!

My favorite so far is the Epic Gourd'thulu (or just normal Gourd'thulu) from the Mogloween dungeons. The portal in the background was amazing and Gourd'thulu himself (itself?) was just big and scary looking in general, definitely not something you would want to meet on your stroll through Greenguard Forest.

@Metakirby stole my first choice, but my second favorite would be the Slime Lord in Yulgar's sinkhole. The first time I went down there, I really got a sense of "HOLY CRAP THAT'S A BIG SLIME". For the best boss design, I'm going with the GateWraith. The blue smoke/mist/whatever it is adds a really nice touch.

@dbukalski
You're thinking of the Void Waiting Hall

General Gathmor, since he's the boss that everyone needs help with when trying to finish the shadowskull bridge quests(but it feels great to solo him).

Tyrion the Tyrant for sure. I love how you kill the massive snowmen and then the final boss is a dwarf. Pretty cool Easter egg, and a pretty bad pun.

That's pretty much all of AE's games in a nutshell. XD

My favourite fight so far would still have to be Sargoth the Necroknight. Especially since Artix's NPC appears every now and then!

King Slime

Because it's the only freaking boss that has a unique combat mechanic

Everything else is bland bland blandity bland - oh you're low on health? Resup and keep spamming available keys

We need at least 5 bosses with the most mundane of combat mechanics because anything is better than nothing (unless its absurdly OP and impossible to counter)

Why is it called AQW3D?
I always thought it was going to be AQClassic but in 3D.

As for the actual topic in hand though, it's definitely the Dark Necrohencer.
Freaking 1% chance to spawn. I almost gave up on getting the Necrohen Hat.
But when I was farming for it for the 300th time some lower level party members asked me why I kept grinding. When I told them I was hunting for a chicken they doubted its existence but when we reached the boss room it actually showed up and my party became dumbfounded that it really does actually exist.

Sadly only 2 of us got the hat since one of them died just as the boss was about to be finished.

Don't worry, it's obviously a small mistake in the title.

Epic boss fights? the Pumpkin boss felt super epic because it just looked amazing.
But sadly no BATTLE was epic. There is currently no diversity or interesting mechanics to make battles any different. The last boss in the skulltower dungeon kinda did well even with the limited mechanics the game has: (Various Spells, spawning of enemies, multi-stage fight of some sort), but not enough to make it mega amazing. But still fun!
Melting the crystallized clawg was a pretty cool moment, too.

Beating the Crystal Queen Spider and the Crystallized Clawg have to be arguably the most refreshing battles in the game so far (imo) because they aren't just about engaging in combat, but also involve lots of map interaction. I hope to see more of these beasties in the future.

Unfortunately, AQ3D's combat so far is incredibly shallow which makes it difficult to bring variety to monsters. Because of this, the game is lacking in noteworthy battles for me. One of the main problems with AQ3D's combat for me is that it is too passive due to it recycling the combat from AQW.

However, I am aware that there have been attempts to bring varieties to monster battles. The Slime Lord and Necroknight are slightly amusing due to their AoE mechanics, though they either extend the battle or make them more open attacks instead of making them more challenging. And outside of AoE, those bosses aren't really engaging, much like most other bosses in the game. All these bosses may boast skillsets, but besides the casting AoE there's no real way to counter them which lessens the need of strategy. If classes were given skills to mitigate specific effects perhaps these battles may be more enticing.

In the end, this just calls for the need of gameplay development. Considering they have only 3 months left before official launch, I understand that this is a high-stress period for the development team. That said, I think time could have been managed better during earlier stages such as Alpha, which is why I hope the next 3 months are spent more productively. I also think it is time for them to focus less on content and more on gameplay. I know that the content team is separate from the gameplay team but releasing more content at this point of time would mean the game would be harder to rebalance, especially considering the gameplay changes on the way. I also believe that the content team can instead work with the gameplay team to improve existing parts of the game. What's more, a large chunk of gameplay is underdeveloped or primitive to otger games, namely combat, even for a Beta stage. This is why I believe that the focus on gameplay is paramount. But of course, content should not be entirely forgoed, but just less emphasized on in favor of larger priorities.

I'd say the third phase of the Battleon Invasion. Massive dragons attacking the town, knights rushing to fight them, the bodies of fallen allies (who weren't respawning yet) gives the event a realistic sense of a battlefield and of war.

I have to admit, I enjoyed the End of the World event (at end of Pre-Beta); it was the most epic battle. It was a short event for about a day when Artix would restart the servers and replace Drickens with waves of monsters; I enjoyed the difficulty of the monsters and farming the End of the World tokens even though the items weren't useful for anything. My favorite monster of the event would have to be the Destroy Dragon because it was the first dragon any player has ever seen.

When it comes to a boss being epic in simple way i would say General Gathmor takes the cake for me considering that i have had quite many moments when fighting him: needing multiple people to fight him at once to take him down, actually getting killed many times by his hand before getting him down, him having quite a lot of health/attack and also of course his stance when he is guarding the entrance to Skulltower him being like "face me you weaklings!".

Boss that is epic in more epic way than just being simply epic i would say Necroknight (i might be biased so sorry about that) is fitting: a little cutscene after taking him out (this was before we got actual cutscenes with Ashfall releases), Necroknight spawning skeletons of various types to aid him and of course him shapeshifting (what?) to one of his four forms meaning this boss fight was first to have phases even if it was quite simple one at that.

I might change my view when we will get to face Dragonlord Talyn in Ashfall part 3 and i hope i will get a chance to do so.

And in the future i really hope that we get more complex boss fights (and yes i know that game is on its early stages), so we can get that feeling of triumph after defeating the boss.

But seriously i want Dragonlord Talyn to be that step to more complex and epic fights with one or two more mechanics that are not what we already have seen and it doesn't have to be anything groundbreaking, just something that makes us consider where we should be standing (AoE spots that we have to avoid and no i am not talking about variations of magic shockwave that some bosses and normal enemies have) and such.

The best boss battle has to be between gorthor the warfiend and the abyss warfiend. Gorthor because starting out and it being the first boss you face actually looks intimidating, threatening, and powerful.. but returning at a higher level is just, ouch.. and the abyss warfiend has a nice bit of an intro to it, it's general area, the cutscene and the environment leaves you with a sense of wonder. Wondering how it got there, why it's there, what can the other circles and area of its world possibly look like. What I'm sure we can all agree about these two monsters is that their designs are A-1!
