The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) is the non-profit corporation which organizes the presidential debates today and was established in 1987 under the joint sponsorship of both the Democratic and Republican political parties in the United States. Prior to this the presidential debates were organized by the League of Women Voters (LWV).

From its inception it has been criticized for its hostility towards 3rd parties as expressed by the then Democratic and Republican national chairmen.

At the time the move was defended by Mr. Fahrenkopf, then Republican national chairman, by saying.

quote:

ORIGINAL: The New York Times Feb. 18, 1987

''The extremely competitive nature of the two parties will ensure that we will reach the best possible agreement for all concerned, most importantly for the voters of this nation.''

This thread is the discuss the Commission on Presidential Debates, its merits and whether it is better or worse than the system which it replaced.

Wow, so it was originally organized by Woman voters, thats interesting. Anyways I really do not know enough about the original Commision in order to pass judgement if this current organization is better or not. If the original Commision allowed third party participation I would automatically think it would be better, but I do not know if it did. I do not like the emphasis of the two party system in the US because it ultimately leads to a bad guy/good guy sense. I feel that if third parties were to be represented more in media it would lead to more discussion in what could be done in situations and more focus on information.

While I certainly do agree that this poses such problems towards 3rd Parties in the country, I feel that the real key issue here lies in the Electoral College system where it forces people to vote for two relevant candidates, while the rest stands zero chance.
