@Cray: Well, when AQC was first conceived, many of the enemies had defeat animations that looked lethal, such as the Zard Master or the Drakel Destroyer disintegrating. Nowadays, those same enemies, less so. There were also other things that were toned down, but I was informed in the past that those aren't... forum-appropriate to talk about.

Individual animations of random encounters, particularly rare ones that are no longer applicable, do not in any way create a current narrative standard nor reflect on character development. Even if, for the sake of a thought exercise, they remained canonical, they would at best be an exception to a rule and not represent a failing in any respect other than not meeting an arbitrary standard.

You are of course still invited to reframe your point, though. As I said, constructive criticism is more than welcome.
