AdventureFriends 2: Edelia

Hey there, heroes!

At long last, it's that time of year again... Time to return to... AdventureFriends!

You've been accepted into the prestigious and honorable Edelia School of Weaving, and your first day of classes begins today!

Do you have what it takes to learn weaving, and maybe find... friends? Or will you be lost in a mysterious legend of the past?

Meet your classmates, forge bonds, and solve the mystery of AdventureFriends 2: Edelia!

This week's release has the first day of your time at Edelia. Unfortunately, like we often do, we ended up biting off a lot more than we could chew! While we had scripts written for the first three days of Edelia, we only had time to finish one. (This day 1's script was longer than three of the first AdventureFriend's days combined, for reference, and days 2 and 3 were also rather... lengthy).

But that's just our reasoning for why we have one day released this week (And even that was delayed!).

We entirely intend to release the full story this month, even if it means taking up three weeks worth of releases.

And while we know AdventureFriends isn't everyone's jam, (and that's fine!) we hope you'll try it out, and enjoy the story and the characters, even if you're not a fan of the format compared to traditional DragonFable quests.

Finally, a couple quick adjustments to the Tomix fight in the Tenets of the Devoted Inn challenge board.

  • Tomix's Avoidance shields have been changed to Defense.
  • Tomix's Full Synch shield amount has been reduced to 200, from 210.
  • Damage on some of Tomix's moves have been reduced.

And that's all for now! We'll have more AdventureFriends for you next week, and coming later this month, special Edelia themed customization options for the Student armor! As always, we look forward to reading your feedback!

Have yet to do solo Tomix, since I earned the max helm prior to the MPM>DBP transition (although I don't really celebrate it. Some... weirdness happened in the fight against Drakonnan then that might've eschewed the fight too much into my favor), but the defense change should make him more reasonable (using previously applicable strats, WDL and Techno no longer need to stack their sniping skills with 200 AST dragon) while requiring to still be cautious of the pace.

As for the latest dating sim for this year...
    spoiler:

Seems that I'm moving into the Fae route after I decided Prof. Secundus calls the shot to which group to join. Since I did defeat Tomix solo last week, couldn't jokingly say, "Yeah, I may or may not have rekt him hard." Who could be the antagonist this time. The glow is reminiscent of the Unraveler, but then the mothman thingy doesn't have four eyes.

    spoiler:

I enter the Academy and the first thing I see is Secundus in glasses and tie. That rather sets the tone for sheer absurdism.
The story is good, the art is amazing, the characters are memorable - though I don't actually know who Tek and Valen are, so I may be missing some of the humor.

And wow, I totally forgot about Fae!

You might want to review your AQW (Doomwood II, for a hint) or DF's Tea for Three if you don't know who Valen is. Tek is an NPC of MQ, supposedly quite a tech nerd if my memory is right.

    spoiler:

Hmm a mysterious four eyed figure cloaked in a blinding light whose reaching out to us in dreams. I don't think they could be the Unraveler, at least not at the moment, not because it doesn't have four eyes but because while the legend it comes from says it appears in dreams, which this unknown entity has done to us twice so far, that prophesizes looming death or the arrival of new life the four eyed entity has only asked us for aid so far.

I suppose it could be in some way be Secundus like an alter-ego of sorts though that frankly seems unlikely. Another possibility could be Tomix himself since he has been named dropped and thus he's asking us to help him either from beyond the grave or he's trapped somewhere and is contacting us while we sleep. That doesn't explain the four eyes though unless he's appearing to us in spirit form potentially as Elpis but that form didn't have four distinct eyes only two (though did have multiple eyes around it's body so who knows). I suppose one possibility is that within Elpis two eyes they have four pupils but we just couldn't see them until they got up close sort of like a Shiraoi situation but I doubt that's the case.

I'm also curious as to what determines Secundus choosing which classmates you join because he sent me to join Wolf with Valen and Maz on way playthrough but then sent me to Hawk with Fae and Alex. I assume it has to do with the amount of points you have in favor for a character.

On that note I'm slightly suspicious of Fae and Alex but I wonder if their behavior towards you is just a red herring till then I'll be watching them Or perhaps suspecting any of the students is a trick and this time it's one of the Professors or heck maybe we are the threat this time around.

Furthermore, I like how much more variety goes into the dynamic of the dialogue options in determining what vibe we give off to other characters.

Oh boy, this gonna be GOOD! Seeing some of these ancient AE characters after so many years produces a unique nostalgic effect on the oldschool playerbase that other younger RPGs/MMOs simply cannot achieve. On that note, does anyone have a video of that old "Tek's mechs" Ballyhoo ad that used to play all the time back in the day? This release is really taking me back, hah.

I really hoped that adventure friends will become a tradition, and I was soooo happy to see we get another crazy-school story!
Right from the beginning, the art of the students and the background was perfect. And then...
    6 options. Wow.
I deliberately picked Fae's rout and well, her character and personality are clear enough hence you can be sure you don't make mistake.
    Can't wait for day 2 and 3.

    AdventureFriends!! Yes!!!

... So that's the first thought that ran through my head when I saw this release, but I had a few more thoughts following that. I think it's really fun, but the design notes and the game itself agree that it was rushed. It feels like the devs were super passionate about making this and really excited, but they felt like they had to get it out for the weekly release and didn't have time to add everything they wanted to add.

That's not to say the release was bad! But I think it suffers from time crunch, and it really cant reach its full potential of what the devs had envisioned. They could only push out Day 1 today, and this might go for 2-3 weeks total, so they don't even have the whole thing finished yet. I don't know how hard the devs are crunching this, but it's not easy to make a dating sim, and it sounds practically impossible to make even a small one in the span of just 3 weeks. I don't think the devs want to compromise on quality, and sure, I'd rather have some content than no content at all, but releasing this on time literally requires some sacrifices on quality. I think even if you loved the release, you probably agree with me when I say it's obvious the devs wanted to spend more time on dialogue and branches.

It also honestly feels unfair to people who don't like AdventureFriends, which is a totally fine stance to have. There's no battles or conventional DragonFable style gameplay, so this entire month is basically just going to be an inn battle and a dating sim that you might not like. Normally, DF has 4 completely different releases that have a lot of variety, so even if you skip 1 release, there's 3 other weeks that might appeal to you. If you're not an endgame player, imagine this: the developers spend 3 weeks of a month designing an inn challenge. For people who love it, they're talking about how complex and well developed and unique it is, but if you just don't like the inn? That's a month you have to skip on releases, when usually DF serves up all different kinds of options. So yeah, even though I personally had fun, I can definitely sympathize with people who aren't interested in a dating sim, and it honestly feels unfair to shove that all aside for a minor holiday.

I think in an ideal world, AdventureFriends would be a full spinoff, where the devs could make it on their own time and be able to add everything they wanted to instead of just developing it in week-long chunks. I can feel for the devs wanting to make this as a passion project, but I think it's fair to say that the release hasn't reached its full potential and it sucks for people who don't like the genre to miss a month of releases.

Oh I can already tell this one's gonna be a doozy.

    spoiler:

It seems there's a lot more setup for when things will get weird this time. Just the mere mention of Tomix's name seems a like recipe for all sorts of craziness, not to mention Secundus and Vaal being in the same room (don't think I didn't notice Vaal's look!) and Tek being there too. The names Jarmila and Percivaal are rather curious as well. Could be unique quirks of these versions of the characters, but still.

I also noticed that a piece of Secundus' dialogue changes after he splits the class into three groups. It changes from:
"Which leaves Dragon. <Character> and... Ah. That's right. Tomix refused to grace our classroom with his presence today." to
"Which leaves Dragon. <Character> and... Ah. That's right. Tomix refused to show up."

...I really can't say if the wording choice is a hint, or something meaninglessly synonymous, or just something thrown in to mess with our heads (if so it's working >:((((() or perhaps all three at once. I thought it was worthy of sharing nonetheless!

Excited to see parts two and three!

I had fun with AF1 and I'm looking forward to the remainder of AF2 as well.

That being said, I do echo Shrike's sentiments above. AF2 is truly an ambitious release that no doubt used/will use a ton of dev time over three weeks, and it feels pretty unfair to people who don't enjoy dating sims, who are looking forward to new classes like Bardcore or Fleshweaver, or who play DF for the main story.

AF1 was fine and all and it was an interesting idea the first time but spending the next 3 weeks on a side event that will available only once a year is a horrible use of the limited time devs have. The pacing of the mainstory is already hellishly slow and the to-do list of things said to be "coming soon" is so incredibly long. As a thought, if the time were to be spent on actually finishing fleshweaver people could play the class and it would see much more use than just a one off seasonal event. Obviously it's not as simple as "just finish fleshweaver" but the time could at least be used for progress or something considering it was announced nearly a decade ago. Frankly I'm just disappointed overall with the decision to burn 3 weeks on AF2 and believe its a poor use of time.

I do like to point out that AF isn't just dating system.
The writing is hilarious and brilliant, so you can treat it like some side quest. Especially if the setting will be utilized for dive more into the weaving magics (which in my opinion, are one of the coolest things in the game).

Anyway, I guess it's too late for there year, but maybe we could get a different ending from "big daddy was messing with our minds to treat some love-ish thing". AF obviously happen only in dreams, but- there are many interesting characters who play with this theme: Kathool, Remthalas, the Unreveler, Ska'ar... Maybe each AF we'll deal with one nightmare being, as the background plot for the dating system.

^Fae was the girl that was holding onto the nature half of the Earth Orb, which caused her to swap in out of her human form and cat form as well as other animals, in the Earth Orb Saga

I had a hiatus right after Sinnocence first appeared / choose between the Rose / Vind / Golden Hand, and started replaying again around October last year.
Has anything been said about the long term plan of how long is Book 3 supposed to be?

If we consider 1 year = 52 weeks = 52 releases, holidays have traditionally taken up at least a month since the very beginning (Heroes Hearts Day, Thankstaking, Mogloween, Frostval)

When did Reimagined Quests for Book 3 become a thing? I appreciate the effort for that, but it seems like something that could be done after Book 3 finale. What's next, Reimagined Espina Rosa quests?
If other opportunities are to be considered, early Book 1 storyline seem to be the better targets for Reimaginings.

A Hero is Bored (released Oct 6th 2006) till Book One Epilogue (Sept 16th 2011), about 5 years.
A Hero is Thawed (released Sept 7th 2012) till now...we are fast approaching 10 years into Book 3.
At the current pacing, one can't really estimate when Book 3 will reach its finale, like, definitely more than 2 years from now? Book 1 seems to have ended on a nice pacing.
I have no complaints about Book 3 main story / sub-sagas themselves so far, just a curiosity on the staggered pacing of it.

^At this point, still no specifics on how soon Book 3 will end, but the pace is reaching a climax now that the major players are doing their stuff while the Hero's group is busy closing portals. While there are validities on your views that the early Book 3 reimaginings which began on 12-27-2019 when A Hero is Thawed and Loremaster Maya got updated, it would've conflicted with Hard Mode (the only old stuff that is backburned far longer than Stoneheart Fall is going Hiatus x Hiatus) and the eventual reimagining of Book 1 once Three's curtains close. Looking at it on the bigger picture, including potentially severe -as how some insurance legal terms state- "acts of God", this is the better choice as at least Book 3's existing story flow is as coherent as possible as opposed to the "in a vacuum" nature of each of Book 1's sagas. Be glad that Seilah will go bye-bye, or else we're in for another re-war in the Sulen'Eska arc. And before any potential pent-up concerns on the release patterns, that pattern does exist to keep the small, two full-time dev team sane at the least (I know how exactly mind-melting Inn weeks can get for the playerbase).

Even if the main story progression is rather slow, I don't understand why some people seem to have an issue with spending 3 weeks on AdventureFriends. Some say it is a "dating sim" which isn't everyone's cup of tea...but AF is literally a PARODY of a dating sim - it's as much of dating sim as Doki Doki Literature Club is. Just look at it as a side story or a peek into a parallel universe or whatever (that vision the hero had on the first day implies even deeper story involvement this time).

Overall, I think AdventureFriends is one of the most creative ideas Dove and Verly have had in years. The only other event in recent memory that comes even close in terms of breaking out of the traditional DF bounds was the Archive E-189-L war, which was a great experience as well. I bet if Dove makes a poll on his Twitter account about people's thoughts on AF, an overwhelming majority of players will say they would like to see more of it. The huge number of likes on the announcement tweet for AF2 is a pretty strong sign too.

It was decided so that the story that Book 3 is going forward makes more sense, because previously, none of it was build upon in the early parts of Sulen'Eska. And the other reason was that they were the worst part of Book 3.

Well, Book 1 had a different development. It had a bigger dev team and back then we got multiple quests on friday, continuations to different storylines at the same time.

So currently the dev team's approach is quality over quantity and I like that more. Sure Book 1 had better pacing, but it wasn't nearly as good as Book 3 is currently.
