Installing GIMP for Windows



Okay so Vader Has his overview but I wanted to get alittle more in depth, so I made my own tut for all you future GIMPers out there.

First, you'll want to go to this link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gtk%2B-2.6.9-setup.zip? So you can download the mirror. Try to pick the one closest to your area

After downloading the mirror you will want to click on it to install it. Your screen will probably look like this so far:









Now click next on the GTK window and you will be prompted with this:








Now after succesfully finishing the installation of the GTK package you'll want to go to this link and download the actual GIMP itself:



Again, choose the mirror that you chose for the GTK package, to be on the safe side. Now double click on the GIMP icon on your desktop to begin the download.




If you failed to download the mirror you will get this ugly message:









But if all is well your screen will look something like this:








After going through the setup, which most likely you won't have to change anything, you can click finish and launch GIMP. Congrats.

:S I followed this tut and when I tried to open GIMP it just sorta flashed and it didn't open >.> How do I fix this?

 I think I know what your problem is, are you running windows 98 or ME? If so you have to use a seperate mirror

either this one: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html#gtk

or this one: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gtk%2B-2.4.14-setup.zip?download

Then you should run the GIMP installer again. Let me know if this helps, so I can edit the tut.

 actually usually a lot of people complain about how gimp is really hard to install, so this tutorial should come in handy

I'm running Windows XP Professional >.> And I'll try that.

 So you can download the mirror and GIMP itself fine right? Try downloading a newer version from the site. I don't know what to tell you.

Gimp is a free program...its a good one to start out with, too...

how the heck do u use it where do u use the tools like how do u draw stuff there is no screen to draw on

*looks around*...*looks around again*i guess i'll answer this one if he don't mind...
its easy to do something with gimp...just go to file>new, and then choose the size of a document u want...and to draw, you can use the line tool, or press K on the keyboard...that gives u the pen tool...

How do you use shiny effects o metallic effects?
In short wheres the effects button/menu thing?

...ok, u opened up a new document, right? after u do so, go to the top, and look for the word 'Filters'...i thinks that what you're asking for...

l2: It could be that or "Script Fu" that your looking for. You will find it right of Filters on the top bar.
