Diark -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 9:54:59)

Here is a simple change in Dialoge of GEARS entrance exam.
quote:

[Starbuck]: Congratulations, that was very impressive, <character name>! Let me see according to the assessment info, your score is...

[Starbuck]: OMG! This is impossible.. there's no way you could score that high. There must be an error in the data...

[Starbuck]: Wait a minute, I'm receiving a message from Dean Warlic...

[Starbuck]: (Talking to the dean) Are you sure sir? There is n precedent for this... Well okay, i understand. Yes sir!

[Starbuck]: Well, <character name>, it looks like Warlic has something special in mind for your test. Prepare to fight me.

--------After you lose to Star Buck--------

[Nurse Helia]: Wow, i can't believe that procedure worked!.

[Nurse Helia]: Oh! Hello <character name>. You're as good as new!.Some of your part's were damaged so i replaced them with holographic cybernatic implants.

[Nurse Helia]:Don't worry they're temporary and they'll disappear as soon as your parts regenerate

[Nurse Helia]: You're so lucky!.No new newcomer has ever survived a fight against Starbuck.

[Nurse Helia]: He was never the same after he faced his Entrance exam.For some reason Zombie's don't want to bite him.......

[Nurse Helia]: Anyways, everyone is very impressed! You broke the old record by a huge margin. Even Dean Warlic is impressed!

[Nurse Helia]: hrmmph... and nothing ever impresses that guy...

[Nurse Helia]: Oh, you're still here? You're all clear! Have fun at the University!

Terosin -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 10:02:24)

Well - There is actually one thing that I miss: Drops.

Ya get most of your weapons in DF from quests. Atleast I do.
AQW always has some nice, hard-to-get items from monsters.

We only had few of them. The Ducky Dive items rewards and the Head on Zargon.

Such items are good to work for.

Diark -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 10:32:39)

@Tero-Yes but almost ALL Drop items in MQ are based on rolls,specially the Bat Head....................so frustrating.

Master Champ -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 15:47:57)

I have spent some time trying to catch up with MQ's story line so I could give better input. There is one thing I have noticed about this game, there is a lot of repeating the same quests over and over again. On the moon for example, you have to do one quest at least 11 times, almost definitely more. On Planet 51 you have to do two different quests over and over, 1 is hard but guarantees a rank up, the other is one enemy and you have to roll. In Westion you have to do the same quest repeatedly to get all these different train parts. Westion is as far as I have gotten so far, but there is no question in my mind that there is more. This gets repetitive, boring, and the battles seem longer than they really are. Now the quests that you don't have to do over an over again are fun, and funny usually. If there were more quests that need only be completed once, then the game would feel much more fun and easy going. I have played DF, AQW, AQ and WF a little bit (not enough to be sure), but MQ so far seems to be the worst at this. Granted the other games do have this problem (I am looking at you AQW and your Rep quests) but MQ feels like it has this happen in every area. The worst part is that you need to do this to progress in th game. This I feel is the biggest flaw in MQ. Perhaps if you do less of these things, or maybe tune it down a little, and add more actuall quests, then the game would definitely feel much less like GrindQuest, and more like MechQuest.

Diark -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 15:55:08)

@Master Champ-That is why im suggesting to improve the Game play,to enable the players to play through all those quest's again and again without getting bored.

stealthwings -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 16:07:24)

@maegwyn
If you do that, can you please look at the nubertron? (anniversary one) iirc, everyone had agreed it needed one, even blues, but then you got sick for a long time, and everyone forgot about it.

@diark
What are they based on in DF?

spoiler:

invisible rolls

They are the same, but invisible

Diark -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 16:13:58)

@stealthwings-You mean the Drops right?.

Problem is,in DF making the Rolls Invisible actually helps since the player can't see what he has rolled.

But in MQ lets say the roll requires 90 or more to pass and the player gets 89,It would REALLY be frustrating,....................Especially if it was a hard quest.

stealthwings -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 16:17:15)

@diark

If you had farmed enough for more than 2 doom weapons, and still not gotten a CCA (at CCL, I ended up getting one with DCs the second AExtras came out, btw, if you can't/are too lazy to do the math, I did that quest 280 times) you too, would want to see the roll for the drop.

Diark -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 16:22:17)

@stealthwings-Actually i got my CCA on the 70th time i did the 100 room Dungeons................

Let this topic not shift into a discussion of DF rolls!.

Fact remains that MQ rolls are still hard as our Stats contribute almost nothing to them.............

stealthwings -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 17:01:06)

@diark
how have you done that and yet still do not want to see the rolls?

In df, the invisible rolls do not care about stats either.

Anyway.

I do not miss drops.

Denolth -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 17:23:41)

Well, I have recently started a new account so I could continue a guide I'm writing. Leveling up is really hard at the moment, and the newbie interface could be improved. As some of you have already said here, sadly, the beginning of the game is what attracts people or not. That said, I think a thrilling new introduction containing tons of lasers, explosions and battles would show what MQ in fact is.

Take the Sys-Zero scene (that one where his starship crashes, accessible by talking to Warlic) as an example. Something like that at the beginning of the game would attract many, many players. Even though I think the MechQuest Introduction is pretty good as it is. It's very funny (take the ship crashing near GEARS University AND the GEARS Entrance Exam as examples), and addicting. Unfortunately, some people do not see it that way, and stop playing the game at the very beginning.

Jamesl64 -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 17:45:22)

@Stealthwing: I do, as long as they aren't any stronger than most weapons, it's useful because you don't have to buy every weapon.

MasterX3 -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/24/2010 17:55:16)

In my opinion, the updates don't have a huge effect. As previously stated, the staff is small and only Korin and Warlic (Well that's what it seems like right now) are working on it

Edit:I'm not saying the games bad, but it can be improved! For example, the weapons. I've caught up to almost everything and I just don't see what to do next. I've tried catching up with planet Yokai but my Mechas arent right. There's a ton of variety of Mechas and weapons, the problem is, most of those Mechs are designed for specific quest chains, and most weapons are weaker than (For example, House Mechs) the default weapons.

Schwarzbart -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 2:23:28)

I also would say that MQ is hard to come back after a longer break because of the big powercreep it haved (still have?).
I think the first thing a returning player do is thrying the newest release at last it was so for me and with old equipment and not used to need special equipment/mechs the chances are big that this player is lost.
Also one souldent expect the player to go to the forum whats somehow is a big flaw point of the battleon games I play because as fare I can see its expected that the player get important infos from the forum.

Diark -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 12:55:00)

@stealthwings-Patience is more than just a word ya know....................Besides i got it like 8 months ago.................
Coming to think of it,We never had an intro in MQ..............Perhaps us graduating at Mecha Lecka High?..............

Here is a basic suggestion
quote:

*Graduation Day*

The player is in a Podium with a broken robot head and arm at 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Principal:Congratulations <You>!,You just passed the Wreck'O'Mech Class 101 with Flying colours.

<You>:Thanks Principal,I couldn't have done it without my "How to pilot a Mech with both Hands tied" guide written by someone named Worsh.

Principal:As the result of your Academic Performence,the Kingadent has given you permission to take the Entrance exam to GEARS university in Soluna.

Principal:You will arive there by a Drop Ship which is coming to pick you up shortly.

<You>:Great!.So when will the Drop Ship come here?

Principal:Oh the Drop Ship isn't coming here <You>.

Principal:As a bonus to your graduation we have given you the exclusive right to test out an Experiment device manufactured by a company named Ebil Corp.

<You>:So what does this Device do?

Principal:This thing is supposed to transport goods from one place to another by Molecular Reconstruction.

Principal:By the report EC gave me,basic test's on this Device showed that some molecules didn't show up.

<You>:*Gulp*.This isn't dangerous is it?

Principal:Dont worry <You>.This Device is approved to be tested out by the Kingadent himself.

Principal:Initialting process in 3 Seconds.

Principal:2.......

<You>:On second thought ,i can manually get on the ship right?

Principal:1.......EC FDB Teleporter load complete.Initiating Teleport.

Yellow light falls in and the player ends up in the Drop Ship

Yup , no RPG can work that successful quest wise with no drops , the drops in MQ are very very few (Neglecting the collectible's here)

EinhanderX01 -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 15:03:03)

I actually hate drops; it's already bad enough that I have to grind for Credits and Exp, so grinding for more equipment will become a pain. Esp. when I wanted to collect the high level versions of the Sniper arms on Lagos.

I wouldn't mind MQ having drops, aka "Salvaging", if there was a decent mech on occasion, instead of just tossing out randomly powerful or at least decent weapons. Bonus if Salvage can be sold for a small profit like with some of DF's equipment drops.

Personally, I'd prefer if the drops/salvage is kept to a minimum.

Orion The Hunter -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 15:17:32)

A great turnoff, (as probably stated before), are the stat. rolls. Frustrating, and best to be avoided if you ask me.

I know, especially if you have to grind a quest with rolls. -_-

Lord Zombie -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 19:36:28)

I have to agree about the updating the intro, maybe it might be of help to make it a bit more interactive? say maybe add and connect some cutscenes(like Dudu Master mentioned above)from the dropship with battles since it seems that your left on your own in trying to figure what to do, sure you have the tutorial but it's something you have to look for yourself. And maybe not on the dropship but possibly in gears university have a way to temporarily introduce a bit of the modern mechas to show/give experience to the newish players as to what they can aspire to obtaining later on in the game, and how different the battles will become from those early stages, and get them excited for the game(thinking something along the lines of a limited temporary test of what's to come, like the arthurian wolf If I recall that had that quest to temporarily pilot the mech around). Also maybe try to have a stronger presence in continuing the re-balancing and revivals to the earlier parts of the games as many enemies still are not up to the standards of the more recent mechas available that have multiple specials and better accuracy with those said specials..

forumlogin -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 20:14:55)

And if a person isn't turned off by the intro, they're going to stop at the mid-levels, when almost no content is directed at them, save for some power-creep killed mechs. :(

@Lord Zombie
That's a bad idea.
Are you using a rare mecha?
Because with non-rares, the world of Lore suddenly becomes so much harder.

Lord Zombie -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/25/2010 23:26:21)

Well the idea would be to start from the intro and continue from there into those mid-levels eventually to span the whole game, but yes rares do tend to make things easier..but most people have a chance to obtain some of them, and there are some good non-rares around too you just need to be open to the idea that they might not be as easy to use or possibly OP as some rares may be. Which would be a good reason to see the re-balancing and revivals to possibly resume again..

Small Profit? Are you kidding me? The average drop item sells for 100-180 gold, and it would take like three runthroughs of the quest to get that much off of monsters alone. Selling items is pretty much the only way to get money in DF.

Glais -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/26/2010 0:14:59)

And Titan Battles, but that's only if you're a DA holder...

Master Champ -> RE: MQ's Low Popularity (5/26/2010 0:26:27)

I like the idea of drops, but that would only add, guess what, more grinding to the game...
