Eukara Vox -> The Official Quotes Thread (3/10/2011 22:59:43)

Welcome to the OOC Official Quotes Thread!

Yes... you read that right. Seems that no matter what we do to you guys, you cannot stay away from these threads. I mean, all I have left is BURNING and, well, that would only affect my computer, not yours...

Anyway, because this topic seems popular enough, the OOC now has an official thread for it.

In this thread:

  • Discussion is not a must, but it is encouraged.
  • Discussion of what others post is also encouraged.
  • Quotes should not exceed 4 sentences.
  • Six (6) quotes per post maximum.
  • Two (2) posts per page maximum.
  • Quotes need to be original. If it is already in the thread, do not repost it.
  • All posting behaviour rules are in effect. Even if the quote source self-censors, you are not excused. You are responsible for everything you post.

Corvus Corax -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 3:10:08)

There's one little quote that I have taken vast amounts of comfort from over the years. It's quite well known, often quoted, and possibly considered trite. Still, these four little words can be something to hold onto even in the darkest of times. You've probably already guessed what they are, but they are in my opinion always worth repeating: This too shall pass.

Lord_Amaron -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 3:37:22)

Reposting..

This would be the best quote ever made :
quote:

[Meeting Aliens] Please don't eat me! I have a wife and kids. Eat them!
~ Homer Simpson

steel blade -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 4:05:33)

quote:

You may have the strength of a fighter, but does it have the same strength of your heart?

An original by me, I find it inspiring because, what is strength without the perseverance?
It's like you're doing nothing for nothing!

Brownie -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 4:22:31)

As posted in the old quotes thread by FaceBreaker36;
quote:

"Cigarettes are a lot like hamsters. Perfectly harmless, until you put one in your mouth and light it on fire."

I like this quote because when I saw it, it made me laugh and brightened up my day.

kpnut -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 6:47:03)

quote:

If it ain't broke don't fix it

One of the best quotes to live by, because if what you're doing is fine why change it?

Fish -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 7:34:22)

quote:

Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where the heck is the ceiling.

I like this quote...Don't know why.

Travis Touchdown -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 8:06:40)

quote:

Do not let sorrow break your spirit. Instead, use its cold, hard body to steel your resolve.

This is a quote from a novel I've been working on in my Creative Writing class.

quote:

To each his own.

Words to live by.

quote:

"Wait! Hurry, demolish your Trading Post! You do not want it to end like this, do you? Let us end this with a bang, not a whimper!"

~Napoleon Bonaparte, Age of Empires III, one minute remaining until he loses by Trade Monopoly. The tone with which he says this is hilarious, especially since he is depicted as being extremely pompous when you're fighting him.

quote:

"Hmm... the blood of your warriors will only keep the sun rising for a few more days. Send more."

~Cuauhtemoc, ruler of the Aztec, Age of Empires III, on your puny army.

Ah, Cuauhte, I love ya. An awesome and humourous friend or foe. Nearly every line of his is very quotable.

quote:

"Your forces are almost worthy of... well, me. Not good.

~Frederick the Great, Age of Empires III, on your substantial army.

Like Napoleon, Frederick is depicted as somewhat pompous in-game, which makes his complaints all the more fulfilling when you finally bring his to his knees.

quote:

"These are dark times. I regret the nessecity of annihilating you.

~ Queen Elizabeth, Age of Empires III.

Like in real life, Queen Elizabeth is rather mild-mannered, which makes it somewhat awkward when you're forced to fight her. Still, this makes some of her battle lines unsettling.

...Yes, I've been playing AoE3 a whole lot recently. It's a great game, what can I say?

Xplayer -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 10:36:49)

After careful consideration, I've decided on six quotes to post.

quote:

“I don’t mind the regret, if I fail in an attempt to achieve my dreams. What I don’t wanna regret is not chasing those dreams.” ~Akito Takagi, Bakuman

quote:

“Dreams start by believing. If you don’t, even dreams that can be granted won’t be.” ~Haruhi Suzumiya, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

quote:

“No life is worth so little as to give up on it, to think ‘I don’t care when I die.’” ~Seishin Muroi, Shiki

Dreams are something that I believe that we should all have. Living a hopeless life is quite wasteful in my opinion. Haruhi's quote especially indicates that there is a difference between dreams that can be achieved and dreams that cannot, but one often does not know the difference until one tries.
quote:

“I’m always an idiot. I always have to lose my way once or I can’t reach my own answer” ~Kyoko Honda, Fruits Basket

quote:

"A painless lesson is one without any meaning. One who does not sacrifice anything cannot achieve anything either." ~Edward Elric, Full Metal Alchemist

Of course, one does not achieve dreams immediately. There are usually several painful failures between the dream and the realization of that dream. That is not a reason to lose hope as long as the dream is worth fighting for.
quote:

“If it’s something that you decide for yourself, you’ll never truly regret it.” ~Bakuman

This was said a couple of times in Bakuman. In the end, the result is only part of the journey towards success. Often even in failure one gains something valuable. Therefore, it is best to try to chase your dreams to the best of your abilities, but make sure that they're your dreams and no one else's.

raylas -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 16:25:27)

I have some:

quote:

The night is always darkest just before the dawn.~unkown

It's just such a beautiful quote, and it applies to me as well.

quote:

Radix malorum est cupiditas ~Geoffry Chuancer, The Canterbury Tales

Latin, translates as "Greed is the root of all evil" Truer words were never spoken.

quote:

Getting what you want is not nearly as important as giving what you have.~Tom Krause.

I LIVE by this quote, Self Sacrifice is the noblest of all virtues.

Superemo -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 16:58:09)

quote:

"If you have a dream, don't wait. Act. One of life's little rules. Got it memorized?"

Axel, Kingdom Hearts II.

Tdub -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 17:10:40)

quote:

A person's a person, no matter how small.
Dr. Suess, "Horton Hears a Who"

Dragonnightwolf -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/11/2011 17:13:12)

quote:

There is no knowledge that is not power.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Artezza Trigger -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/13/2011 10:31:31)

quote:

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Don't try, and you'll never make progress.
quote:

Knowledge is worthless without the wisdom to use it.

This guy can explain it better than I can:
"knowledge comes from studying what others have done before us. wisdom comes with age and experiencing ones own mistakes and faults. my answer is yes.

Knowledge is an archive of facts about reality that you have memorized, and hence, can assert whenever you want. It doesn't not amount to true understanding of such facts, and it certainly says nothing about the harmony between your attitudes and behaviors and those learnt facts of reality.

True understanding comes when your behaviors in your day to day life are according to what you know. When you practice what you preach, and what you preach is in accordance to reality, you are said to be wise. This implies being able to use your knowledge in a way that makes a difference to your concrete problems and relationships and really furthers your life. This is wisdom."
quote:

I may be drunk, madam, but in the morning I'll be sober and you will still be ugly.

Winston Churchill. Hilarious.
quote:

Atoms have mass. I didn't know they were catholic.

Forget where its from, but its a funny joke all the same.

Hallie Slidepath -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/13/2011 11:23:36)

quote:

With a hammer of your hand, every problem with resemble a nail.

One of my favourite quotes ever. You can apply it to almost anything, and it's easy to understand.
I have a whole collection of quotes I like, but decided to post this one first. More may come laterz ^-^

quote:

"Cigarettes are a lot like hamsters. Perfectly harmless, until you put one in your mouth and light it on fire."

This one made me laugh so much. I'll definitely quote this the next time I get into a discussion about smoking.

Shirefolk -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/13/2011 18:20:31)

quote:

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear ... "

~1 John 4:18~

quote:

"You are working at a toy store, yes? Does that not make you a hypocrite?
"What? How does that even--?
"Money equals POWER. Power equals CAMEL. Camel equals FIVE CELERY STICKS. Five. Quid Pro Quo."

Insane Troll Logic FTW [:D]

Tapeworm Shoelace -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/14/2011 1:49:30)

quote:

soon as Adam’s eyes met those of the younger girl, who stood nearest to him, some sort of electricity flashed—that divine spark which begins by recognition, and ends in obedience. Men call it “Love.”

From "The Lair of the White Worm" by Bram Stoker.

1412. -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/14/2011 3:41:08)

quote:

"i'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees"

Its origin is unknown, although this means that one would rather die an honorable death fighting for what is right.
Rather than live a humiliating life, a servant, if you will.

quote:

I'd rather be in the Moonlight than in the Starlight.

An Original by yours truly, this means that one would rather be hidden than the center of attention.
Those who would rather be hidden.

quote:

One Truth will Always Prevail~ Jimmy Kudo

This means that there are several lies, that have truth in them. But one of those Truths
is the right truth, that will expose all of the other lies.

Kidatrea -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/14/2011 4:10:42)

quote:

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own and you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.

Dr. Seuss

quote:

The more that you read, The more things you will know. The more that you learn, The more places you’ll go.

Dr. Seuss again

ultimatenoob -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/17/2011 12:05:47)

quote:

Nothing big or small is beyond me here. …what you think you know… could change tomorrow… try not to cry when it happens.

Miltonius

@wildroses Guess some people just do not listen

Static Wolf -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/17/2011 12:31:01)

quote:

"For every dark night, there is a brighter day."

- Tupac Shakur, AKA 2Pac.

I heard it recently and thought it is a really inspiring quote. For me it means to keep going, through whatever life throws at you. Love it.

Wildroses -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/17/2011 23:40:22)

@ultimatenoob: What always surprises me about that quote is that even though Miltonius is always saying that, people still get really upset when he changes his requirements and wares. I guess no one listens to Miltonius.

I was watching random Dragon Age Origins and came across this exchange which made me laugh:
quote:

Alistair: Just so you know if the king ever asks me to put on a dress and dance the Rimgold, I'm drawing the line.
Warden: I'd like to see that.
Alistair: For you, maybe. But it has to be a pretty dress.

If you find the YouTube video you also get to watch Duncan sighing and clearly wondering if he ought to resign as a Grey Warden recruiter.

I found this one on Lolcats which also made me laugh:
quote:

You can give a cat a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Or, you can teach a cat to fish, and he'll sit in his boat pouting all day because nobody gave him another fish.

I liked it because it was a new twist on an old saying I wasn't expecting, and accurately describes feline behaviour and thinking.

xDanix -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/22/2011 2:29:25)

quote:

Sometimes - history needs a push.

~Vladimir Lenin

Lately, this has basically become my catch phrase. I mean, just the awesome truth of it. Plus it's by Lenin, and that, to me, is cool all by itself.

quote:

Can a nation be free if it oppresses other nations? It cannot.

~Vladimir Lenin

Another truth.

As a history buff, who is pretty obsessed with the 20th century as a whole, this next quote is one of my favorites, though, and again this is just my opinion, the guy was somewhat of a massive ball of fascist jerk.

quote:

"The man who has no sense of history, is like a man who has no ears or eyes"

~Adolf Hitler

Trash Talker -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/22/2011 2:51:06)

quote:

If you can't join 'em, beat 'em

That's one said by Adam Sandler, but I don't understand that one completely.

nield -> RE: The Official Quotes Thread (3/22/2011 3:50:29)

Quotes, eh? Way to hit me in the weak spot.

What to choose? Hmm... let's go with...

quote:

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth
~Sherlock Holmes.
quote:

What then, that we are? If not that what we wish as was as is would be?
~Something I came up with that distrubed me very deeply later on.
quote:

Who takes the pinnacle of success? He who wishes to live comfortably. Who goes beyond? He who is a fool.
~Again, myself.
quote:

I reject your reality and substitute my own!
~Adam Savage.
quote:

'Who knows what manner of unutterable evil and unspeakable despair awaits us there!' 'I do. Here, let me tell you about some of it...'
~Yep. Me again. I come up with some strange stuff.
