TJByrum -> A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/10/2015 20:30:34)

Has anyone realized Rise of Domrius was posted last August? That's nearly a year ago. It remains as one of the longest-running (and still standing) RP's on the new RP boards. The Hallows Inn is around 9 months old, going on a year. Both RP's, however, are slow moving. Looking back, what other RP's caught your attention, but didn't quite make it? Are you happy with the current RP's, and what do you think would make the community better? Anything you'd like to add?

I for one am glad to see names like Afina, TormentedDragon, Krey, and even Eukara Vox pop up. While I never knew them a whole lot, I recognize them as 'senior' members of the RP boards. I feel like, with their return, the RP boards could improve (and I am very glad Afina has made a RP to boot).

I was really looking forward to Ryu's Felicity, Legendium's Aurora, Tdub's The Hunt, and Dethhollow's Tennotochi. I think if I could revive any one of them, it would be The Hunt though; I think it had a really interesting basis, and I was pretty excited to find out who Vlade was (if he was 'anyone' at all). I wish I could have kept Isle of Dracos going, but that was extremely poor planning on my part that made me shy away from it.

I'm certainly glad the Academy idea was done away with. I didn't like that system at all. Unfortunately, we didn't get that huge influx of new arrivals I expected.

The fact that the Hallow's Inn is 9 months old is something of a personal achievement. It is the longest running RP I have ever had. It is certainly not how I expected it, but it did end up teaching me a whole lot. One day, I'll renovate the Hallow's Inn (and perhaps rename it The Ploughin' Pony )and make a better, more exciting RP, based on the Germanic-Baltic regions, and include more locations and plots- with inspiration from the Teutonic Order. Also, being in Rise of Domrius is another achievement for me. I've never been in a RP for that long. It too has taught me a lot, and it is one of the RP's I can't get enough of; I really enjoy it, despite it moving at a crawl right now.

I still wish we ran with The Assassin's Guild for longer. It had a cool premise and we were getting somewhere with it and then it was nuked with the rest of the old RPs.
Not sure if this was on this forum or another, but there was a cool Victorian steam punk RP about a guild of monster slayers that died. Wish we ran with that.

Vanir -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/11/2015 2:52:41)

I remember the Assassin's Guild...

I cry every time.

black knight 1234567 -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/11/2015 4:31:01)

I don't remember who ran it last time, I think it was TJ?
Also someone on here set up a thief roleplay where combat is minimal and it was all about the heists, man that idea was so damn cool but it died before it got off the ground too.

TJByrum -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/11/2015 17:37:17)

Yeah, I was the original creator of the RP, but I had passed it on to someone else. I didn't think anyone liked the Assassin's Guild that much.

The heist RP was Felicity, by Ryu Viranesh.

Bastet -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/11/2015 18:01:26)

It's been that long? Woah.

May the Rise of Domrius and the Hallow's Inn never die.

TJByrum -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/11/2015 18:08:35)

Wishing I could do a whole redux of the Hallows Inn. Make it bigger and give it some direction. It feels stagnated right now.

Have I been gone so long as to be forgotten? You passed the Assassin's Guild on to me. It meant so much. I very recently looked through my post history and noticed that once the Assassin's Guild fell apart, all of the other RPs I joined only lasted a few posts. I left role-playing for a while and returned during the massive RPA revision, and I must have gotten caught up in real life and lost interest because I didn't follow through with that. Anyway, it remains that the Assassin's Guild was the last successful and long running RP I participated in.

I just began poking around again a few days ago, but everything here looks stable. Stability, I think, is much more rewarding than popularity and buzz. The community looks strong and reliable, albeit small and slow. That is why I am so excited to return here. I haven't checked out Rise of Domrius yet, but I've extensively check out the Hallows Inn. Everyone has created exciting characters and I really love the setting. I haven't read through the IC yet, but I'm very optimistic about it.

Don't scrap Hallows Inn. Its great because we as role players give it direction.

TJByrum -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (7/12/2015 12:42:09)

@Vanir: Yes, I remember you. Just couldn't place your name. And you'd be more than welcome to join the Hallows Inn!

@BK: I'm glad you feel that way BK. I introduced the Nazha plot to get everyone started, but it turned out everyone was ready to start interacting all on their own. I feel like the Nazha plot just slowed everyone down and crippled them, and the RP would have been better off had I not done that.

I'd like to introduce more to it is what I'm saying. Keep everything as it is now, put it on hold for a moment, and create a whole new OOC with my changes. I'd like to expand the Darkwald, using inspiration from the Baltics and Eastern Europe. Germanic, Danish, Lithuanian, and Russian influence. I'm also interested in the Teutonic Order, and I'd like to introduce an order like that in the RP. Some sort of knights guild dedicated to some sort of religious order, but they're more or less a bunch of mercenaries who slaughter for the highest bidder; their influence is growing within the region, and they're making claims in the Darkwald.

Then again, I can add all of this in as the RP continues. Luke Grange, for example, is creating a new location at the edge of the Darkwald called Stone's End. The Varan to the north are very much like the Danes from Denmark. Vaelun and his companions are starting a monster hunting guild somewhere in the Darkwald. Before long, the players could see a sort of Teutonic Knights order appear. I'd just like to make it larger, with more to do.

Kooroo -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (8/3/2015 1:57:32)

Hmm. Old RPs that didn't make it, eh?

Ruins of Paxia, and I'm not going to mention the reboot. Vanguard Academy, though I was in that for.... one, maybe two posts? Or maybe I had the second one coming but never posted it.
Super's Weavers was good, but the slowest thing since snails leaking super glue slime trails.
Words also started well.... And that was that.
Welcome To The Clubs was another good one.
Lords of War is possibly up there with Ruins of Paxia. The second time really didn't get far though, so that was more than disappointing.

There're another few that I remember were alright as well, but I can't remember their names and what I did or what happened in them. So they probably don't come in here.
... Mistagen, or something was one of them. I think?

Am I happy with the current RPs?
The RPs currently out are fine. They seem interesting enough.

Happy with the current number of RPs?
.... There are three. I think you can guess.

Things that can make the community better?
Right, see, this is where we can get into paragraphs and paragraphs as to what happened, and what could try to improve the community or just the overall Boards themselves, but it's also here where it gets long, potentially ranty and, more likely than not, off topic.
And people don't like that here. Off topic, and I see there's already been plenty of debating.

Anything to add?
Not really. There may be a thing or two, but eh. It's all clear enough.

Ronin Of Dreams -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (8/5/2015 15:59:23)

I do what I can, and have shook things up where I can, in the hopes of drawing in more life and activity. What I cannot do is force folks to be willing to DM new RPs. Given that it is EC season, there is the usual hope that some of the new blood sticks around if they find any interest in the RPs going on. Plenty of work goes on behind the scenes, and you've seen alot of it recently finally getting into a live format. More will come, but I don't really have many more carrots to give. Besides, the EC is an incredible investment of time to run.

~In short, pardon my dust.~

Still, I'm willing to hear suggestions. If you have any, Kooroo, please feel free to shoot me a PM. Trust me when I say that no one misses the olden days more than myself, and I had some solid hopes with the return of some old blood.

In terms of what I miss and regret seeing die off of recent RPs, Empire of Beasts had a rather interesting concept. Unfortunately, I never really got the hype for Felicity, but I suppose that is in part because of what I knew behind the scenes. Going a bit older than that, I wouldn't mind seeing someone take another go at an MQ RP via something akin to The Crystal Game or Mech Generations, and the latter was probably the most popular MQ RP on the boards ever. Not everything has to be a complicated epic plot, or even all that deep, to be enjoyable after all.

Starstruck -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (8/5/2015 20:07:18)

I personally think that the main problem with RPs at this time is a heavier desire for epic scale or permanent RPs. These are great, but unfortunately...as we can see, they're fueled by interest alone, and if they fail to be consistently interesting, they died. My RP, WaWiaPoW, was fairly railroaded, and it made it about a third of the way through before dying. It lasted a year and a half. The EC consistently completes, and it's entirely railroaded - there's no freedom for characters to establish side plots where they go off and, instead of fighting in the highly simple tournament, idk, slay a dragon or whatever. While those side plots are good for fun RPs in the short term, they aren't going to hold people there for long. I would say right now the RP boards need more Domrius and less WttC.

Maybe when we have multiple RPs opening and closing over the course of a year, it might be a good idea to introduce one or two long-running RPs when people are consistently active and aren't held only by those long-running RPs (which kills their activity if someone takes a long time to respond).

Just thoughts. I love large-scale things as much as the next guy, but cmon, let's keep it moving!

Kooroo -> RE: A Look Back on the RP Boards (8/10/2015 16:19:31)

We haven't had a successful 'short' RP in ever, really. They always seem like they'd need to go on into the ages to be successful. I mean, there could be just a simple one or two 'slay this guy' RPs, but noone really hosts simple ones.

... I'd participate in one of those RPs. They sound fun. Or even as a single guy that runs around, trying to slay everyone. Like hide'n'slay. That sounds fun.

As for the sideplot development bit, Hallows Inn seems to be going alright there, though. I suppose getting the setting right is just another important thing.

Regarding suggestions, I'm not sure how well that'd do here. These forums are handled very differently to other places I wander around, so I'm not sure they'll be that suitable here. There're things I'd look into, but I'm not sure if they're personal irks, possible to do or overall any good, so iono.

The whole 'epic' RP thing leads to laziness as well, I suppose. 'Oh, it's my turn to post, but since it's such a large RP, I'll just catch up later' leads into bad things, I suppose. Especially if people are centered around that character, then it becomes awkward.
Also, vanishing. People still need to be better with regards to handling that. Sure, people apparently have things called 'lives', but still.
Courtesy is a thing. Pop on, do a post. "I'll be away, feel free to slaughter my character in the most brutal manner."
Too bad hosts are nice, though :/

As for RP hosts, ehhhh. All the people with the huge, awesome ideas keep vanishing when they're needed. Or people throw interest checks in RPGD and they don't go far. People probably just need to try and put down a prototype of the RP in the main boards and then see how much interest it gathers. I'm pretty sure we do have some form of a base to get things rolling. Since, you know, DoC and the EC drew out a whole bunch of lurkers.
Though the EC may be more of a migration/fly-to-the-RP-Boards-for-the-winter thing.
Iono. Not sure if that makes sense. Probably should note I haven't really hosted any RPs here or looked into it much, so that might just be random rambling.

Hmm, probably could've worded ALL of that better, but I'm good at doing that thing where you write down what comes into your head and then going back to rearrange it.

Right, footnote. Yulgar's. Not even sure what's happening there. Several people are in there, but've forgotten they're in there or something. No idea. Poof. Vanishing cannon. It's a strange phenomenon.
