Now that we have established a small base of graduates in the RP Boards, I've been thinking it may be time to start another RP in it to get things rolling. First we'll need an idea, which should be pretty easy to get considering all the ideas that have been flown around here in this board, a host, and then we'll have to ask the AKs if there's going to be anything special and new when starting an RP in the RP Boards. So, who's with me? :D

Well Legendium, I would probably think it's best to wait until the next batch (2-3 RPers) comes in. But that's just me, if everyone else feels now is a good time, so be it.

If we post a good enough RP, maybe others will be more encouraged to come along?

I would have suggested the Elemental Championships, but we'll probably need to wait until we get a lot more people.

Any arena-style or tournament-style roleplay would probably work. I noticed the RPers around here like PvP and such, I myself even plan on trying my hand at it (I never was a PvP kind of guy). So I am up for an arena or tournament style roleplay.

Can we call it Punch Punch Princesses?

@TJByrum

That's not my type of RP, but I don't see any reason not to do that kind of an RP. Variety is the Spice of life and all that jazz. It certainly might look more attractive at any rate.
And for now, this thread is really just brainstorming and getting a bit of a vote with the players. If we can combine this with the previous war idea, I'm all for it.

@Star

Anything's possible, but if we choose that name, we'll have to change the middle word to something with a V. For humor's sake.

First off, the Elemental Championships is an official RP tournament that is run every summer. So that isn't really up for grabs.

Second, there is this thread where I asked which RPs people would be interested in bringing back.

Third, several people are being evaluated to serve as hosts for the new RP Boards. Once we have a few more people graduating, we'll be working on a Host training session for those who are interested or close to being ready.

Personally, I think arena-style RPs can be sort of boring. I'm all about the epic adventure-story type RP, but that's just me.

When it comes to me, I'm also an adventure RP type, preferably with combat and some great chances to develop characters mixed into the whole package. There's a lot more to adventure than just saving something (usually the world) though, and that's perhaps what I find most fascinating. The chance for character's personal stories to become intertwined with a particular quest of some kind that takes people where they never thought they'd go. Just my two cents on the whole matter.

But, but can't there be adventuring punching princesses?

...

It started as a joke but now I actually kind of want to see/make an RP about princesses in various unladylike occupations like boxers, bounty hunters, and gladiators...and that's why superjars should never let me host RPs.

jars: But the first one we do is special, more special than the rest. It's like getting Wilbur on the plane before Amelia. Of course we have to discuss which one will pave the way for the others! Of course, Tempest is the one that really has already claimed that spot...

This is a very good idea Jars. Not everyone is cut out to host. Take for example, me. Although I think I can come up with some good RP's, I don't think they'll ever see their true potential cause I never have to confidence or will to keep moving them along. I never finish my roleplays, so me being a host just means the RP will die quick(er). World War Lore, City of Silversword, Assassin's Guild... I always gave them away to someone else.

I'd be interested in a 'Host training session', if it can, as the name suggests, train me to be a better host.

Also, whew *swipes sweat from brow*, I thought I was alone when it came to adventure-story RP's. As I've mentioned in the past, I have never done a PvP roleplay, I always stuck to the adventure-RP's cause I liked them more.

So am I normally. Maybe we should put up a poll in the RPA, to see which kind of RPs people are interested in. We could make our first decisions off of that.

TJ, I don't think you're a bad host at all. You just suffer from the opposite of hubris.

@Star

Ya know, I kinda want to join you on that one. But it'd have to saved for a later time. The first six RPs that get up in the RP Boards should be serious. Until one of them finishes though. Then I'd actually like to play in that RP. And anyways, you could just make a princess that slugs things in any normal RP. Jokes are allowed, my character in the Tempest proves that.

@Legendium: Thanks Legendium. I like to create worlds, stories, characters, and conflicts, and I like to watch other people interact with them. Unfortunately, I always get ahead of myself, wanting to start a new roleplay about a new world, with newer stories, characters, etc. I can't just sit still and say "okay, here's what I need to focus on". No, I want to focus on more than just one thing. But it's a good thing we had that "1 roleplay per host" rule, else I'd have about 10 RP's going on at once.

I have in mind a simple roleplay, one I think people could enjoy. It's nothing big, would not last long, etc, but I plan on hosting it whenever possible as a 'test RP' or something.

Having a Tolkien-like basic RP would be a good way to kick off things.

*cough* ArenaChallenge *cough*

But yeah, I love adventurous RP's. Something that changes over time, changes scenery and area. Something with progress, and perhaps a goal that everyone has to work together to achieve.

A dragon has attacked, and now a team of adventurers are called upon to slay the great beast. Little do they know, they are the pawns in a much greater scheme. But will they uncover a destiny far beyond what any of them thought they could achieve?

Something I had in mind. A little 'teaser' sort of RP, and if it gets good reception, have more RP's set in the same universe, same characters, etc.

[unhelpful commentary] I think it's apparent by now that we definitely want a fight-based RP. What kind of fight-based RP I leave up to the rest of you - I personally am not interested in that, as I find fight scenes rather difficult to write well.

I do agree, however, that we should have a fight-based RP, if only because there seems to be enough people interested in joining it. And then there should be something else (whatever it may be) for the rest of us. Dunno what. ^_^

I suppose 1 option could be to try to hit a lot of the desired themes simultaneously. The risk of this would be that the RP gets complex (or messy, depending on your perspective) with multiple story-lines

For example, picking up predominantly on the 'fight based' themes...

-dragon goes on unexpected rampage
- a group of adventurers is formed from different towns/races kill a dragon
- various armies converge /skirmish with the intention of grabbing the dragon's gold for themselves
- adventurers battle with one another or try to find a diplomatic solution to conflict
- adventurers/armies accidentally trigger something that opens gateway for new threat to come through.
- various armies have to band together to try to slow new threat down
- adventurers go on quest to get (something else) that will stop new threat getting through

Etc.

Obviously that'd need A LOT of refinement!

Jokes aside, I really, really would prefer a very, very simple and linear RP. I want to see it end with the GM saying, "Good job, everyone. You slew the dragon," not, "Well, it looks like nobody is posting in this anymore..."

I would like to see a very simple RP with clear goals and expectations set out at the beginning. I had one forum suggest a posting order and a post limit so that there could be a "by post #10, the show needs to be on the road and the dragon needs to have been sighted" type restriction. While posting orders are probably not the best idea for this forum, post count objectives could be one way of keeping us on track.

It could be The Hundred Post Dungeon! And all the characters express confusion as to why it is called that because those are clearly pillars, not posts.

I've brought this up before, but...

So the cool thing about forum roleplaying is that it does NOT use traditional table-top roleplaying games statistics, dice, percentages, etc. We use our imagination, reason, and everyday common-sense to roleplay on the forums.

But. But, what if we mixed the two together?

I'm not saying have all sorts of dice rolls and percentages being written in the IC... but we do stuff like that in the OOC and we convey it in the IC realistically. You know, everyone could have character sheets with 'vitality' points' and 'attack', 'dodge', etc. So combat would look something like this:

OOC
quote:

Torvar has a 80% chance to hit you, so I roll the die. I rolled a 50, that's within the 80% range! That means Torvar hit you! Torvar has dealt 5 damage to Ysmir!
But wait! Ysmir has a 50% chance to block that attack! I rolled a 25, therefore I blocked your attack!

IC
quote:

Torvar readied his weapon, blood dripping from the edge of the axe's blade. Gripping it in his two hands as hard as he could, he raised it over his head and charged at Ysmir, bringing it down as hard as he could. At first Torvar expected to feel the axe cleave through skin and bone. Instead it met the hard surface of Ysmir's steel shield. A loud clanging noise sounded and echoed within the empty caverns.

It's JUST like D&D, but we convey the results in a realistic fashion via the IC.

EDIT: I have no idea how D&D works, and I did not intend to interpret how it worked in the above example.

This amused me to no end.

I think that would have been better suited to "RPs You'd Like To See," though, unless you're suggesting we do that RP first?

You guys could try doing an RP similar to the Salvatorian books featuring Artemis Entreri, Jarlaxle and Drizzt Do'Urden.

Adventures inside a Walled City as has been shown in "Road of The Patriarch" if you guys've read that book.

A good mix of free-roam, and adventure.

While that would be a wonderful idea for an RP, Arthur, I don't know if it would be a one-off thing. While I love a free-roam as much as anyone else, they tend to die at awkward times of the plot, which is why I would prefer something much more linear for our first main boards RP.

If you think we could pull off a free-roam, though, please continue! I have never heard of those books, so a quick explanation of how you'd derive an RP from them would be good. Nothing fancy, just a quick description of the premise (it is a world where X does Y) would really help, I think.

On the idea of free-roam, it depends on what kind it is. You could have two types:

One is just creating a world and saying "have at it", with no clear direction or story. Just a 'make it up as you go' type thing.

The other is creating a world, a story/conflict, and leaving it up to the players how to do it.

Which makes me bring up another idea: Power Unlimited. A mysterious island with a powerful artifact on it. You are an adventurer of some sort who has come to this island to find the artifact for whatever reason. Will you make alliances? Who will become enemies? And most importantly, who will find the artifact first? Keep in mind there is only the players on this island, there is no cities, no NPC's, nothing - just the players.
