Finally, this is the last week to pick up the January and December seasonal items, as well as access the Frostval storybook! Make sure to get what you want before they leave for another year!

I appreciated this quest a lot. I think it's clearly the best reimagined quest in the past half a year, mainly because we finally get some interaction between our hero and Akanthus. Also, plot happens! Also, no BiS gear, instead, we get a nifty cosmetic spear!

I've left a lot more detailed praise and thoughts on Discord so I'll just leave it at that here.

And things take quite a turn after I just got back from a grind from a different Lorian multiverse.
spoiler:

Akanthus pretty much shows that he's nowhere inclined to make peace with magical beings. Gotta admit thought that he can pull off a Madara instead of utterly toying with us with combat like Sepulchure did in Final 13th (and I thought that fleeing is gone. That was quite an ending). From his tone it feels like he's either ain't from Lore -at least, not our hero's version of it- or a bona fide resident of Lore, just disillusioned with magic.

Helpful!

I really liked this quest. The plot moved in very interesting way and that final boss was unique for DF, but well done! Although I'm a bit surprised how much we still have left for the first arc of Sulen'Eska, I thought we would move to Swordhaven after this.

And finally some customization for Pyromancer! It is my favourite of the DC classes and I've waited for some catalysts for it too!

spoiler:

This is has certainly been quite the release.

And as expected Akanthus was going to do everything in his power to undermine the peace negotiations with the Vind. And what's more he did so by using that fabled clever tongue of his into to getting someone to provide a result he so desires. It was so obvious how badly he wanted to strike at us when he almost raised his sword against Taivas but he knows he has to stay his hand for the moment because if he does then that means he can't just point to the Vind as being the aggressors in front of witnesses and then basically have to return to Jaania whose isn't going to be happy that he bungled the negotiations. And he knew that's exactly what was going to happen the second Kara decided it was time to leave peacefully. So what does he do? Tells a clever lie, a presented hypothetical (followed by cleverly worded truth), so someone, anyone, in the group, let's their the anger boil over the previous insults and now the possible threat that the Rose has broken its word and attacking Sulen'Eska as we speak. And sadly it worked with a simple thrown rock to raise his sword again.

I do like how both Jaania's and Akanthus' is shown to contrast here because as we know they both desire control over magic, but whereas Jaania is at the very least willing to try and make sure that her desire for control over magic isn't too harmful (her methods of doing so is still crazy and conceited will likely end in her attempts regardless but I digress) Akanthus desires no compromise with magic. He will give it no quarter nor offer any sort of clemency if it so much as smells like magic. If he cannot be chained or control then it simply must be forced to move on from this world. Thus segueing into his use of a Shadowscythe bomb to be tossed into the Mana core.

Additionally though Jaania wants to bring an end to the horrors presented by magic and yet Akanthus seems to want it gone for that plus the limitations it supposedly imposes. Which begs the question of what he even means here since without magic, beyond the lives that would end without it, the world would become far more mundane and mediocre. His line of being a product of the world will still be true regardless the only thing that changes with the end of magic is just new boundaries set by such a world. Furthermore, why does everyone being a product of Lore as it currently is makes you worthless.

Even more strange is what exactly the answer he's looking for because judging by that sigh and the fact he didn't the Hero to disappoint him almost seems like he wants there to be gains of magic on Lore something that proves it's existence is worthy enough in his eyes for it to stick around.

Stranger still is that darn armor of his. At one point I believed it had anti magical properties that allowed him to see through Sepulchure's illusions and while I still believe that if this quest is any indication then Akanthus armor can seemingly nullify magical damage altogether or make himself invulnerable somehow (maybe the hits end up going somewhere else?)which would explain Seppy's story of Akanthus walking away unscathed when protecting Jaania from an ambush from Yalla's soldiers. Which also means he had the armor way before becoming Jaania's right hand. This begs the question again of what the heck this thing is even made out of. It possibly could lead back into the theory that Akanthus is Sobieslav and therefore the armor itself was Soul Forged, although him running from the Magestirium and knowledge of Edelia would mark him as being from the Land of Fables anyway so he could just be some dude that got soul forged armor anyhow. There are of course the magical runes that line the armor itself that Akanthus may have simply slabbed on the armor himself to although I wonder if by some chance he had the soul forged armor first and then added magic runes to it to make it even stronger.

And then there's another potentially crazy impossible possibility and that is somehow Akanthus managed to find a large remnant of Mechquest tech large enough for him to make armor out of and potentially added pieces of what was left into his soul forged swords. A recent theme we saw with Notha was the combining of tech from the remnants of Mechquest and the magical applications of the current universe that is Dragonfable. So what if by chance Akanthus was able to on some level achieve the same feat somehow. I do think he is from Lore but if he somehow got a glimpse of what Mechquest technology is capable of then maybe that's why he views this world as so worthless it's not the magic that's inherently the problem but it doesn't even scratch the surface of what could be achieved. Again totally crack theory right here but I'm getting odd vibes by a few things here at the moment, one being the music as strange as it sounds both here and when Akanthus found the Shadowscythe power source.

Been holding off playing the Reimagined so I can play it in one go ('cause a lot of these storylines spaced out over years are hard to remember for plot points), but I may jump in soon if we're getting major lore drops.

I have to ask (and I'll check back after I've played), does the dialogue support the idea that Akanthus is related to some Off-Lore species or even Pre-Reset Shadowscythe (like the "he is himself or serves the After-Reset Reincarnation of Valoth theory), and plans to ruin magic to cripple Lore, it's magical creatures, and it's dragons (which, pre-Reset, were an intergalactic race that fought the Shadowscythe and who created the Eggs of the Destroyer and Savior Dragons that came to Dragonfable), all for an invasion that could lead to a new story arc?

I knew this wasn't necessarily going to work out, but... oh my goodness. Damn you, Akanthus!

Friendly!

I absolutely loved this quest!
spoiler:

I'm happy that we're finally getting to see a more distinct personality from Akanthus, even if it is a really horrible one, which makes me wonder if Jaania even knew about the meeting in the first place. The spear reward is also beautiful.

A thought:

spoiler:

Akanthus doesn't use magic... but he definitely uses something else.
we we're unable to hurt him, and that can't just be armor or combat skills- I mean, come on.

That, plus the hints that Akanthus isn't from Lore, points to a conclusion- Akanthus has powers that aren't magic as we know it. As in, he does not use mana.
My guess is that this is the reason he works with the Rose- with magic gone, no one will be able to resist whatever powers Akanthus possesses.

Also, whenever Akanthus disrespected Amadeus, I used to think "Man, he's got no idea, book 1 Seppy would wipe the floor with this guy". And while that's probably still true, and Akanthus claimed he didn't know who Amadeus really is...
Well, it's just that there's more to him than we thought, and that might explain his disregard to practically everyone around him. And perhaps the helmet; his face might not look entirely human.

spoiler:

Edit: @Vaalirus- shadowscythe or soulforged armor don't really explain it... We've fought and damaged both types of these powers before.
Either it's something new (at least partially)... Or maybe it was an illusion somehow (either he wasn't really there, or the illusion made him appear unhurt).
