Good tut, It can go straight to gimp word-for-word. Good depth tut, easy to follow. Good job!

Edit: bad spelling

It should. Go to Image> Adjustments and see if you have Curves, Levels, Color Balance, and Hue/Saturation.

When you click levels, there is a button on the right. Under Ok, Cancel, Load, Save, Auto, Options. Auto is what you're looking for.

Woah sage slash, maybe you should look around the SaAMA before saying it ruins a sig. The lighting filter is a horrible tool, it doesn't work well.

Can I have the numbers for "auto levels"? I am using Paint Shop Pro X and it doesn't have "auto levels"...

Ah, I didn't take a screenie. Just add another dark curves layer or add a +5 contrast on it in Brightness/Contrast layer to get the equivalent I presume.

I tried converting this into GIMP and got such horrible results.

Eh? Not for me. it worked fine, you just have to experiment with the first curves layer. Try and get it as close as possible to Metal's settings. And if you end up having the BG whitened then just do a color balence.

So you think people are more likely to play around with curves than contrast?
>.>
I find curves as intimidating as the pen tool.

Lol I love the pen tool too! Curves aren't hard, if you don't like what you get hide/delete the layer or brush black on the layer mask where you don't like it.

hehe
i made a tuit onb this ummm, my first one and now i see this
well mine was for GIMP and i did use those curves and all that and the same almost settings as you, i cant believe it, lolz
and you can also use the color balance and curves to make it blend, and sometimmes even look like the render is shooting out lightning if you use wind
