The first part reminds me of a similar thread, and as such, I'll quote what Everest and Apparition said: quote:
ORIGINAL: Everest A somewhat curtailed About Me section does exist, where you can explain how you found AE games, as well as sharing your birthday, age, and instant messenger screen name. However, Artix Entertainment tries to protect the personal information of its players to as great a degree as possible. The Forum Rules on User Interaction further explain the rules pertaining to personal user information. While it is unfortunate that this is the case, it is possible members would seek to take advantage of any information shared in an About Me section. quote:
ORIGINAL: Apparition Something as personal as a phone number or address shouldn't be publicly shown on the forums. If you really want to get to know somebody, it should be done through means such as AOL Instant Messenger or such as MSN Messenger. If anyone were to be able to know someone's phone number or street address would be giving out an alarming amount of personal information. Personal information people of the forums may not want others to know. As they pointed out, allowing user to put more information that they can in the moment could create bad situations that would ultimately defeat any benefit of having such function, so a "About Me" section is something we can't do. Now, regarding the banner, I believe that's pretty much covered by the ability to use a Signature and adding such section would be something along the lines of a "second Signature", which by my eyes have no useful function. It's pretty easy to make a character banner using the signature space, so there's really no need for a section just for it. About the last two questions, I believe those functions would end up affecting the privacy of a forum member, which is something that really bothers me. Even with the ability to display (or not) their most frequented boards, I fear this is somewhat covered by the ability to check the person's latest posts: It's the best indicative of the forums this person frequents. I believe offering something bigger than that could cause more evil than good, to be honest. Now, for showing someone's buddy list, the buddy function is there so that you can easily contact someone who you like, and showing it to other people is something I see no use other than bragging rights, as another person viewing it has no positive effect to herself or to the user in question as far as I can see. While it's nothing outrageous, I fear this function would add nothing to the forums, and even affect it negatively.
