there should be a little browser box that pops-up when you have a new PM, or at least have it to when you get a PM it sais how many unread PM's you have next you the inbox link like this: Home Login Profile Help Members Search Inbox (5) Logout Play

the 5 next to the Inbox represents how many unread PM's you have

this would be helpfull

Outsmarting Bugs

There is a notification for when you receive a PM, if you go to your Profile and scroll down to the "Private Message" section and check off "Pop-up notification of new Private Message?" you will start getting it.

It is there, but not automatically checked off and running.

As for your idea about the number, that would be quite cool. It might be possible (If the coders can do it) to have both parts of your idea merged, so when you have a new PM the box pops up, but it SAYS how many you have :) That way, you don't have to be going through your PM box every time there's a new PM, to make sure there isn't others. Personally, I think the idea you were getting to is great!
