Ballad of Kyota
Written on request for a friend.

Kyota, in the pale of dawn,
Enshrin'd by the sun's gaunt rays,
Drew forth his blade, Gariton; [1]
He did set its length ablaze.

Kyota, in the forest's depths,
Stood upon an em'rald knoll;
For to send to cold, bleak death
A great, formidable Troll.

"With fire," Kyota proclaim'd,
"Shall I purge thy wickedness!"
After he had this exclaim'd,
In he took his deepest breath.

In answer, the Troll but roar'd,
Its bellow shaking the trees.
In this pause, brave Kyota scor'd
A wound which flow'd like the seas.

En'raged by this blazing wound,
The Troll struck a mighty blow
At Kyota, he who had hewn
Asunder his mighty foe.

Kyota, stagger'd by the clout-
Nearly lost his helm of mail-
Recover'd to then strike out,
Gave the beast its final vale. [2]

Vanquish'd by the blazing sword
Of Sir Kyota, bold and true,
The Troll, now quite neatly gored,
Is a trophy, Kyota's due.
__________
[1] "Gariton" is a play on the Old French "garite" for "watchtower," and similarly, "garir," "to protect."
[2] A "vale" in this sense is a farewell. Mispronounced for rhyme.

Nightmares From Dreams

Line your pockets with the dreams
From the thousands of dead;
Grow fat with your avarice,
Strike down their hopes of bread.

Slice into their misery,
Watch the pus bleeding out
As it poisons their nightmares,
Feeding off of their doubts.

Ravish their remnants of hope,
Fondle your petty greed.
Lavishly drown in your wants,
While they parch of their needs.

When those tasks have been finished,
Then on with all the blame!
Damn others with your pretense,
Pass on deserved shame.

Lap from their shattered daydreams,
As you grow fatter still,
As your pockets burst open,
As you evermore will.

Tinted Pane

With fire in his mind,
Hands clenching the wheel,
White-knuckled with fear,
The pane makes him blind;
His world is unkind.

With nothing to gain,
Driving ever on,
Laughing to himself,
Quietly insane;
He sees just the pane.

Trying not to crash,
His wheels burning red,
His exhaust pipe clogged,
His actions all rash;
His life's a mad dash.

Moving far too fast,
Swerving off the road,
Smashing though the rail,
But one doesn't pass;
They break through the glass.

Stepping through the crack,
He sees what he missed,
The life he'd forgot,
All that he had lacked;
He'll never look back.

And What Happens Then?
Written from the point-of-view of a role-play character

Walking through ruins of forsaken citadels,
Imbibing the wine of fermented fallacies,
Watching as they crumble, our forgotten cities,
All blown to pieces by the wind of our "progress."
When it all disintegrates, who are you then to tell?

Bellowing at no-one to open the window,
For this rose-tinted glass shall not safeguard our eyes.
Candor will soon collapse as syndicates will rise,
Destroying what we have built, and what happens then?
If anyone learns the answer, then please let me know.

Fleeing from the darkness but lacking legs to run,
Ghouls of lost generations howling with their grief,
From the foredoomed cripple to the ignoble thief:
Swept under roads with the trash that consumes us all;
Victims of society, look at what we become.

And what happens then?

Skulk

It's the darkness inside
Of your suspicious mind,
Twisting your thoughts around,
Skulking without a sound.
Feeding on fears,
Lurking for years.

An over-zealous court,
Hunting as if for sport
The victims of your crimes,
"For these are troubled times."
Leave them to die.
Nevermore cry.

Weaving this web of lies,
Trapping those you despise,
Burning them with your hate-
Can't repent, it's too late.
Watch them all leave,
You never grieve.

Façade

Filling my ears with your sweet delusions,
Veiling my eyes with tempting illusions.

Letting me go only to enslave me,
Chaining my soul with your depravity.

Whispering to me, trying to deceive,
Oh, my tangled mind, will you never leave?

Demon In A Perfect World

I want to find a world
Where I can forget,
Ignore past and present,
All of my regrets;

Obliterate my doubts,
Break out of my cage,
Revive dead compassion,
Quell my senseless rage;

Embrace those whom I love,
Re-forge those lost ties,
Destroy this foul creature
Whose sight I despise.

Yet still it lives in me,
Devouring my soul,
Mocking all my efforts
With the thoughts it stole.

I battle and fight it,
My efforts tire me.
And sometimes, I wonder:
Will I win, or he?

No! for I shall slay it,
Regain my lost mind;
Only then happiness
I will at last find.

Abstract In Solitude Minor

I lost my way;
What more can I say?
For the dawn, it comes, (Ah, it comes so fast...)
Comes to take me away.
Nothing I do can stay.

I lost my mind;
It lays within these lines,
Taunting me with visions, (Glimpses of the past...)
Never giving me time
To see what I can't find.

Calling all the dreamers,
Everywhere,
To change the world again.
For I know
That it's cold,
But there's a fire inside.

Calling the wanderers,
Everywhere,
To find our place again.
We just roam
With no home,
'Cause there's a house somewhere.

We'll find ourselves
Among these shelves
Of our deserted dreams, (Our long-forgotten hope...)
Our broken, tarnished wings,
And together rebuild this life.

Fallen Short

No more can be said.
No more can be done.
For too long have I hid;
I can no longer run.

I've got to own up.
I've got to give in.
You say I am corrupt,
I have no chance to win.

I wanted to pray.
I found myself dumb.
I had nothing to say;
The words refused to come.

You were always there,
Yet I never was.
There is no need to stare;
It is simply because:

I have fallen short again.
I am falling short again.

Must I hide away,
Escape from this pain,
To break from my old ways,
To learn to live again?

I have always fallen short.
And I shall always fall short.

Yet now, you cannot harm me anymore.

Inspiration

With the merest touch-
The brush of your hand,
Caress of your breath-
You ignite my mind.
Waves of emotion,
Rampant and untamed,
Cascade throughout me.

Two years was I cold;
My past feelings sat,
Forgotten, rotting,
Waiting for something.
Perhaps not the spark,
You still engulf me,
Consume me with bliss.

And now! within me,
My soul cries your name.
I long to see you,
For we lie so close,
Detached but by space.
Oh, to cross this void!
Need miles so divide?

Yet simply know this:
As you read these words,
You gaze into me.
I lay myself bare,
Open for your eyes.
My voice, a whisper,
Speaks to you through text.

My first foray into blank verse. Written for my dear love.

The Togs of War
Title shamelessly stolen from DragonFable. :o

Rising tide, a clash of arms,
Trampled fields and burnt-out farms.
Soldiers marching ever on,
To meet the fast-coming dawn.
This battle shall never cease-
The Togs of War have been unleashed.

War-fueled rage from every side,
Adding to the Togicide.
Mages' spells and Rogues' daggers,
Hammers for the Warriors:
Tools of chaos, tools of peace,
Tools to bring Togs to their knees.

(Spoken: Do Togs have knees? I dunno, just roll with it.)

Battle, madness incarnate,
This skirmish we shall ne'er forget.
Rest, re-gather, watch and wait,
To prepare for coming fate.
We shall triumph! We shall win!
Until Togicide comes again...

An Entreaty To The World

Why do we fear such things as common entropy?
Why do we feel the need to defy gravity?
Do we find society lacks in levity?
Can we?

Does our world not have enough of this flippancy?
Do people need to shirk responsibility?
Can we grow more careless as a society?
Dare we?

The most vicious brutalities take place behind closed ears and doors. The oppressor and the oppressed, constantly at war- with each other, with the land on which they feed; with their futile hopes and their boundless needs. The people refuse to force open their eyes, to see they've become one with the ones they despise. The humble cry out, begging for mercy; to end the violence in all that they see.

When will we listen as our wounded conscience cries?
Will we ever from the ashes of coldness rise?
Dare we reach out to open up our blinded eyes?
Might we?

As the caress of a loved one warms the heart,
Shall we break from the chains, and let our world restart?
Might we today finally choose to play a part?
Shan't we?

Can we?
Dare we?
Might we?
Shan't we?

We can.
We dare.
We must.
We shall.

Human Again

I stared through a looking glass, what did I see?
An image of a reflection of me.
I broke through the pane and I looked through the frame,
What do you know, it was only the same.
I danced in the acid rain, burning inside,
Let it corrode away what I would hide.
I glanced at that wooden frame, lacking a pane,
What do you know, I was human again.

So come now, ye hollow men, heads filled with dreams,
Lying tattered and broken with the years;
We'll chuckle and moan, yet we'll not be alone,
And find ourselves in our laughter and tears.
Yes, come on, ye hollow men, heads stuffed with dirt,
Come and let the sweet rain wash out your sin.
We'll laugh and we'll cry and we'll live and we'll die,
And find that we're human again.

Malleable

I once said
I will break
'Fore I'll bend-
A mistake.
I was wrong,
I'm a fool,
Idiot
And a tool.
Help me up,
Let me out
From the chains
Of my doubt.
Played the game,
Played the fool,
Broke my soul,
Broke the rules.
Your hands lie
In my heart,
Where the seed,
It can start.
Once again,
I must grow,
For inside,
It now shows:
I'm the chains,
I'm the cage;
I am fear,
I am rage.
I will change,
I will mend,
I will shift,
I will bend.
I must live,
Rise above
All my hate-
I must love.
You lie now
'Neath my skin,
For I have
Let you in.
I could live,
I could die,
In the glow
Of your eyes.
Take me,
Break me,
Bend me,
I am malleable.

Completed

Absently reflecting
In the depths of your eyes,
I find myself complete.

Soul brushes against soul,
Entwining, entangling,
Ne'er to be sundered.

With loving tenderness,
With grace born of beauty,
My hand reaches for you.

One compassionate touch
Holds my countless longings.
I am ne'er without you.

Endlessly reflecting
In the depths of your soul,
I seek to complete you.

For Robert - Your pain is mine.

The Fighting Coward

With yet another busted lip,
I'm thinking through my life again,
While trying to make my way home
Through the dark and the driving rain.

'Cause things aren't working out for me;
My life's events are tedium,
And I don't know how I'll own up
When the end of my time has come.

Will I feel wind beneath my wings,
Before I'm swallowed by the ground?
Will all these castles that I build
Become my burial mounds?

Are these people for whom I care
As hard to grasp as grains of sand?
Can I ever hold them to me,
Will they slip right on through my hands?

And will I ever make amends
For all these things which I have done?
Will I find the courage to stand?
Or will I continue to run?

New Longings

I used to dream of grandeur,
Reaching out to grasp glory,
To seize the intangible,
Inspire those around me,
Leave my mark upon the world.

I used to dream of leading:
Ushering on an era
Of unmatched prosperity.
Some day, I vowed, I'd change lives.
My name would bask in honor.

I used to dream of riches,
Not monetary, yet wealth.
Sewing compassionate seeds,
Harvesting a nation's love-
Perhaps that of a planet.

I used to dream of wisdom.
Those far from me would visit,
And weigh my stance in their scales.
My words would be poetic,
Recorded for years to come.

Those dreams are not forgotten,
But placed aside as playthings.
Nice fantasies, amusements,
Yet still lacking in substance;
Not to be sought-after more.

And now I dream of helping.
To reach out, embrace a life,
And forever change one soul.
Perhaps to serve as a muse,
Or maybe just a mirror.

These new longings are simple;
I dream of taking life's hand,
Letting it gently guide me
Through green paths of righteousness,
And meadows of modest joy.

I dream not of heroics,
Nor of power falsely gained;
Rather pride and honesty,
Graciousness and dignity,
To find inherit beauty.

For if I could change one life,
Watch it bloom in ecstasy,
Smell its blossoms, share its love,
And help spread its many seeds,
My calling would be complete.

In this work, we mummers dance,
Hoping once to take the stage.
Our audience is our world,
Which shall exult and reproof,
Provide our smiles and tears.

Who knows what role I may play?
Who predicts where I might go?
Who would want to know their fate?
This screenplay is not written,
Its lines are yet to be penned.

My part is as yet barren,
Free of back-story, dialogue.
I but hope to win one heart,
And when my act is finished,
Retire with a bow.

I

Demon, savior, destruction, peace.
Ice chilling fire, wind blowing leaf.

I

Adult to child, night turns to day.
Mouths are moving, nothing to say.

I

Dancing shadows with torchlight hair.
How much will be too much to bear?

I

Quivering wraiths within their wake.
How much more of this can I take?

I

The key, it lies within my hand.
For how much longer can I stand?

I

Their voices sound throughout my head.
Can I ignore what they have said?

I

This is as much as I can take.
This is the point when I must break.

I...
I...
I!

Shadow In Their Eyes

Father, can you hear me?
Mother, do you care?
Do these eyes of mine stare
Into nothingness...?

It was one, two, three,
March along with me,
As we trudge on, to our graves.
If you're one to pray,
Add to them today
That our bloodied souls be saved.

Pound these dusty streets
With our aching feet;
Our boots trample what yet lives.
Shake the graying hand
Of a dying man-
We'll take anything you'll give.

Then the enemy,
Our front scouts did see,
With so many more a gun.
As such was our lot-
These colors may not-
But, lord God, how we did run.

After half a night,
We could not but fight,
To defend what ground we had;
"Not to question why,
But to do and die":
Truer words were never said.

We fought hard and good,
Like true soldiers should-
We paid for that with our deaths.
Take one look at me
As beneath this tree,
I release my final breath.

Mother, can you hear me?
Father, do you care?
Or do these eyes of mine stare
Into nothingness again?

I love my gun and my gun loves me.
We are as close as two loves can be.
I feed her the bullets, she feeds me their pain-
Oh, God, am I human or am I insane?
Happiness is her muzzle,
Sorrow when she is cold.
Now listen up, soldier,
And do as you're told.
Back to the front with you,
Back to misery.
Back to the blindness.
Will we ever see?
Come now to me, shadows,
I've been waiting for you.
Are you one of them?
Are you here to take me?
I'm ready.

And it's one, two, three,
Dance along with me.
We shall waltz on, with the night.
Dim your eyes, now, sir,
Because, to be sure,
They could never stand the light.

Father, are you listening?
Mother, can you hear?
Do either of you notice,
As once more I disappear?

Take me from this harm,
Back into your arms.
Please, tell me that I can stay.
But one last request
As I surrender this breath...

Won't you make the bad men go away?

Children of War

We are the children of war.
We are they whose heroes are numbers in a newscast,
To whom a blasted bombshell is a way of life.

We are the children of an IED,
Of the scattered limbs and tattered lives.
For us, chaos is the path of least resistance.

We are the children of a nation forgotten;
When one turns away,
Multitudes are damaged.

We are the children of questions.
Why didn't Mommy come home?
Why won't Daddy smile?

We are the children of a blinded eye,
Of a deafened ear,
Of a society which seems to care not.

We are the children of indecisiveness.
We are the children of self-righteous indignation.
We are the children of destitution.

We are also the children of a new generation,
Whose eyes are not yet grown hard,
Whose ears yet listen.

We are the children of a solution.
We are the children of a possibility.
We are the children of a difference.
We are the children whose world is unfinished.

Fear

With the ebony pulse, I thrive;
With the river's flow, I'm alive.
Blackened nights hold comfort for me-
It is then that I see clearly.
I am he whom you can't ignore.
I am one of the mice that roar.
Condemn me after you hear me out,
Don't silence me before I shout.
I am the whisper in your ear,
Push me away, but I'm always near.
My songs are all those sung of Fate;
Child of Despair, brother to Hate.
I'm the bullet within your gun;
It is from me the enemy runs.
I am the murmur in the crowd,
With moving lips, yet never loud.
Germination, desecration,
Expiration, termination.
Your cities burn and your children cry-
The mighty weep, while the others die.
I am the race that you turn to blame,
I am the cause of worldwide shame.
Drink with the devil, with whom you nest,
Turn from the helpless, be damned with the rest.

Look To Me

They looked to me,
I turned away;
I did not care what I should say.

They screamed at me,
But I was deaf;
Been losing hope with every breath.

And deep within,
I cannot find
The words with which to ease my mind.

I said, "Give up,
You'll never win.
Best just reflect on what has been."

They turned to me,
I looked away;
I'll never know what I should say.

Factory

With blank eyes, we stare up at it:
The gaping wound that slowly bleeds,
Dripping upon our many needs;
The freezing flame which we have lit.

Slowly, it turns its blackened gaze.
Each one of us has an inward sense
It favors us with its presence.
We stand here, as though in a daze.

A chill has spread throughout the room.
Its Power light has flickered on-
Any escape is now far gone;
Grudgingly, we accept our doom.

Whirring motors which once enticed,
We now see them for what they are:
A running sore, an ugly scar…
And it demands a sacrifice.

"Your weak ones," it proclaims to us,
"Bring them now to this room, for me.
Much like them, you will learn to see.
Perhaps from there, you shall gain some trust.

"I do not wish that they resist;
You shall bring them humble, servile-
They must realize that they are vile,
See they deserve not to exist.

"Then, you shall bring those in power,
Who might seek to evade my rule.
Though they may seem collected, cool,
Before me, they'll find they cower.

Finally, you shall bring the rest,
Fling yourselves prostrate at my base.
This thing you call 'the human race'
Weighs naught in the scales of my test."

We leapt into the hole we'd dug,
Bowed to our computerized god.
We needn't now be so down-trod,
Yet no-one thought to pull the plug.

One Step Forward, One Step Back

One step forward, one step back:
Take a look at what we lack.

One step forward, two steps back:
One more lie takes up the slack.

One step forward, three steps back:
Through our morals, let us hack.

One step forward, four steps back:
Lay the world upon the rack.

No steps forward, five steps back:
A whoosh, a smack, a whip crack.

Gather our fear, let's attack,
And watch the blood run down our backs.
