Varium is an incredibly precious mineral. Found only on Delta V, it is the only known mineral to grow. As opposed to crystals growing by taking from material around them, varium seems to actually duplicate its molecular structure. It means in Latin, literally, “changing thing.” These are my theories as to why, and how, that is possible.

The Pool Theory

The outer core of Delta V is made of varium in liquid state. When liquid varium makes its way to the crust, it enters and fills cracks, forming “varium pools.” There, it has time to cool, harden, and crystallize. The molecular structure of varium is similar to that of water, making it less dense in solid form than in liquid form. The sharp increase in volume causes an increase in pressure.

When this happens near a weak spot in the crust, the varium crystals push upward into the shallowest parts of crust: the ones suitable for mining. When mined, more varium pushes itself into the open spot, giving it the appearance of growing.

While this theory is the most logical, it does not explain the unusual effect it has on some humans, turning them into Tech Mages.

The Interplanar Theory

Varium originated in the alternate plane of reality used by Tech Mages to teleport objects instantly over great distances, and also to exile the rebellions on Delta V. It exists in plasma form almost everywhere in that plane, and puts humans into a state of conscious suspended animation, a state that requires no food, water, or oxygen.

All varium is linked to this plane. Perhaps by a fluctuation in the interplanar system, a “portal,” varium entered our universe. There are several ways it could have entered Delta V:
  1. The portal opened in several locations in the crust of Delta V.
  2. The portal opened in open space, other materials were gravitated toward it, and the process formed Delta V.
  3. Delta V has unique core materials that attract varium to it. This is the least likely possibility.
All varium is linked to its original plane, and serves in itself as a means to go back there. It selects a human, and uses the same power of conscious suspended animation to encompass that human. This affects the human’s brain--giving that human a unique, unearthly knowledge of machinery--and cellular structure--giving them the ability to store and release energy.

The primary function of this, though, is to bring the varium back to its plane. With their amazing powers, Tech Mages are also given the ability to interfere with the interplanar fabric. This allows them to open new portals to the varium plane, therefore being able to return the varium to its original location.

If this theory is true, it means some startling things. First of all, it means that varium is conscious (or at least semi-conscious) or that there is a conscious power behind it. Second, it means that by teleporting varium via the alternate dimensional plane, we are loosing it much more quickly than it is growing back. Third, it means that by controlling varium, you can control the minds and actions of Tech Mages. It leaves one to wonder just how Magistrate Baelius was able to recruit an army of Tech Mages at a time when they were a neutral people. If what I imply is true, it means that Baelius' Project Delta obsession might not have been by coincidence.

I will not write too much of Baelius for fear that these files will fall into the wrong hands, so I end this theory before probing too deeply into the mind of the Overlord.

The Radioactivity Theory

In order to understand this theory, one must understand the concept "E=MC^2." In short, this means that energy and mass are equal. Mass can become energy and energy can become mass. The amount of energy found in a body of mass equals that mass multiplied by the speed of light squared.

Delta V was originally made of hydrogen and was incredibly hot. Fusion happened constantly, and heavy elements were formed. When the hydrogen ran out, there was still much excess heat. These heavy elements fused into even heavier ones, some of which were radioactive. One new radioactive element was formed in this process: varium.

Its radioactivity has an effect on the brains of some humans. It gives them an uncanny knowledge of machinery and the interplannar fabric. If this is true, then all humans are capable of opening portals and storing energy in their bodies, but it is only Tech Mages who know how to do such things. This same radioactivity affects the minerals around it, manipulating their atomic structure into that of varium. Over time, this makes a good deal more varium than there was originally, meaning that it does actually grow.

I use the term "radioactive" very loosely here, for it has been proven beyond doubt that actual radioactivity kills humans; it cannot turn them into anything like Tech Mages. The "vario-activity," if I may, is still unlike anything we have ever seen.
