Gifting Event Update

Greeting EpicDuelists! How was your holiday?

Our gifting event has inspiring tremendous generosity from our playerbase. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens with contests with high stakes, certain participants will do whatever it takes to win. If you’re glued to the leaderboard, you will notice a change in the next hour. Thanks to research from the Help Team, we determined that several players were taking advantage of a third party exploit to earn Artix Points. This exploit has been patched, but not before the players climbed the gifting leaderboard. Since a prize as lofty as Alpha Gear is at stake, specifically my Alpha Gear, the players who participated in this exploit will have their achievements deleted and thus be removed from the gifting leaderboard.

We discussed a proper course of action for quite awhile and didn’t arrive at this decision lightly; we didn’t want to disrupt the contest, but we also didn’t want to award prizes to players who used an exploit to gain an advantage. Those who are punished will still be able to gift and receive gifts for the remainder of the event, but with all current gifting progress will be reset to 0.

I'm proud of the decision made. I would've hated to see any of the rewards go to players who screwed the company.

But then this is AE's mistake, why should players pay for it? Absurd.

Much more "reasonable" steps could have been taken, since as far as I know, those players did actually pay for that service, they just had more artix points for the same amount of cash.
Why not do a simple calculation, calculate how much artix points they got, and confiscate it from them. As simple as that.

A mistake was made by AE yes, BUT.. the players took advantage of it. Obviously knowing they were in the wrong.

Took advantage of what?
AE clearly says it supports 3rd party surveys. I don't know what wrong with that. Plus that guy was functioning for years as far as I'm concerned, and I'm still listening to more details from those affected.

Why wait until the gifting event is over? Until they spent their varium?
I just hope AE as a whole prepares its paper work because some suing is about to happen.

@Machaar

The devs discovered the exploit abuse late into the contest. Due to the nature of the exploit (which I obviously cannot elaborate on), the devs had to discuss the appropriate course of action rather than instantly ban the relevant accounts. Nonetheless, the devs made their decision as soon as they possibly could. There were no ill intentions on their part.

Cant say I really support this but can't say I don't either. I mean they technically didn't do anything wrong as they were approached by a legitimate AE representative.

this third party work as doing same survey over and over again which only can be done by a hack and who bought varium from that guy knew exactly what it is , so they take advantage of it and deserve the action took against them ! the price u pay for cheating ! and same action must be done for Codes Leaderboards I guess ! plus I am thirsty , i really support drinking water and i can't say i don't either ! contradicting myself eh ? do i make any sense ?

Well, well, guess I forgot my popcorn. The drama will be all over.

Wonder what top players did this. WOW ROMANIAN AND KATIE BOTH REMOVED FROM LEADERBOARD. I knew something stinks about this event.

From what i see here is that AE made some mistake and now it fixed it. But saying it was AE's mistake and not fixing it would make it unfair to people who actually paid and still could not make it to the LB.

Players removed from the LB had their share of fun/fame, because that's what temporary stuff gets you .... temporary results.

From what I'm seeing here the punishment handed out was a leaderboard progress reset. I don't see anything about losing their Varium or any other form of punishment at all so that seems like a very fair punishment.

^Interesting... So in otherwords those who did abuse this but didn't waste varium on gifts have a large reserve of varium right now and would possibly never need to buy varium again?

Possibly. I never inquired into what happened to these accounts so I'm just going by what the DN says. DN says they only had their achievements removed and gift total reset so to my knowledge that is all that happened to them

Devs are still addressing the matter - the exploit was such that they can't get complete information on the quantity of varium illegally obtained until a few weeks later. On a side note, negative varium is a thing to prevent abusers from spending their ill-gotten gains and avoiding punishment. Don't know whether that will be implemented in this case.

Negative Varium is typically used in cases where a payment bounced but you had already spent some of the Varium you purchased. It's a thing that doesn't come up often so I just wanted to clarify it's meaning in most cases

When NW says, they will have their achievements deleted, is he talking about the gifting ones or all achievements (that would be the most devious punishment... lol)? I'm guessing just the ones related to gifting?

Another thing that I'm wondering is, whether they will have a closer look at the code leaderboard too? If this exploit has been around for a white, that would be affected by it too, wouldn't it?

8x it is very possible that depending on how long this exploit existed it could have impacted a lot of things in ED. That said as nothing else is as high stakes as the gifting competitions in terms of Varium use I don't think other leaderboards will be modified

It my opinion, they should make an effort to correct anything major (like the leaderboards) that might have been impacted by the exploit. But in the end, it's up to them.

I Support And Applaud The Staff's Difficult Choice To Reset The Gifting Leaderboard And Do What Is Just For All.

This Is A Contest That Should Celebrate Generosity And Fairness, Not Reward Players Who Are Taking Advantage Of An Exploit In Order To Achieve Personal Gain And Individual Glory.

Even If Their Intentions Were To Share The Wealth With Others, There Is A Right Way To Do Things And Doing It With Accountability And Integrity Is Important.

Again, I'm Happy That The Staff Did The Right Thing Here. Well Done.

The problem is much bigger than just the gifting leaderboard. Its a big scandal.
The exploit to gain huge ammounts of free varium sure existed a long time before.
For this reason players that got proved of cheating deserve more than just being
expelled from the leaderboard. They was able to gather huge ammounts of varium
over months which they sure did spent already to push their characters.

Another question is how this fraud was technically possible. Is Artix involved in this ?
Usually 3rd party offers (surveys and such) are based on contracts. It does not
bring a good light upon AE.
