Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 12:39:23)

Kose, seeing as Mafia is starting to generate its own little spot here on these forums, would it be acceptable to create a new separate Mafia thread?

here are things we could do with it:
1) manage interest for future games (i.e. reserving spots on future games, so we don't lose people who are potentially interested but are deterred by lack of space)
2) manage replacements for current games (i.e. setting up a list of reserve players who show interest in wanting to play and don't mind replacing in)
3) setting up a list of moderators interested in covering future games (it hasn't started developing too much yet, but I know a lot of people want to give a hand at moderating games)
4) setting up a list of links to guides for playing and moderating (especially for moderating so we don't have a repeat of some of the rules' discussions we've had recently)
5) finally, just plain discussing the game! though I think we ought to include the stipulation of no discussing ongoing games
5b*) possibly setting up a sect of dedicated players who can check games for balance before they begin (a quality-check team, if you will)

Is there anything I'm missing from this? I've proven to myself that my activity levels are too low to manage all of this, so we could keep it all in one thread but have the first few posts dedicated to some of these topics: i.e. one person would be in charge of replacements and interest, one person would be in charge of moderators and perhaps the quality-check group, and one final person would be in charge of managing links and guides. How does the idea sound to you for now?

random fun 12 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 13:49:09)

What would you guys see as necessary for a good game. I've tried to include a good plotline for the players, but other than that I suppose it could do with something. Any ideas?

Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 13:58:05)

>.> Actually, random fun, we had begun developing a guide on that when we hit a road-block on what actually makes a good game.

It's rather hard to say. My two cents would be thus:

The actions we perform here are basically another form of role-playing. The role of the GM is to provide the players with the inspiration and understanding to roleplay their characters effectively. The motivation of the player to play is that they want to be like their character; thus, in order for games to be fun, a couple of things have to be done.
1a) the game must inspire the player to want to be their character.
b) Thus, the game must create an atmosphere where said character will shine.

The success of many of the games can be attributed to this. Many of the zombie survival games that have flourished on this site take on these sort of conditions. The characters perform outrageous feats of bravery and strength, and get to be damn cool. They are also very relatable, harkening back to a primary Human vs. Nature conflict. That's why these types of games seem to have be very well-liked on these forums.

Any thoughts?

Un67 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 19:32:27)

I believe firmly that the most important aspect of a game is flexibility. If the actions of the players can affect the state of the game world, then it gives the players the ability to say "I did X so X happened" which I feel is very satisfying. As a result I feel games without a stat system tend to be better than those with them, for the simple fact that the players are capable of doing more. In addition, I feel that being able to start the game with unique characters is very important. I feel that having everyone start exactly the same with no customization is... dull, and unfulfilling. OK, it be problematic at times, but even so I feel it makes for a better experience. Now, there are some notable exceptions to all this - the incarnations of Mercenary and Sorcery comes to mind. Still, I feel this is the best way to make games.

Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 19:46:14)

I might add that the flexibility of the world fits into how the game must inspire the player to want to be their character. Thus, that they can do all the crazy batty stuff they'd like to attempt IRL here.

1girlhousefan -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 20:40:05)

Also, the GM should have fun with it too. When they don't have fun, they seem less inclined to make interesting updates on time.

PBlades -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 22:24:58)

Well whaddya know, this thread is still here.

Looking back, it's been a while since there's an FSG game here.

Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/2/2012 22:30:47)

I think everyone who used to run and play FSGs are a lot older now and hardly have time for it: I for one know now that I'm going to be dropping my potential spot at the D&D group in my school because I've finally reached my limit. With age comes many responsibilities, and I for one know that I cannot handle running games anymore (especially when I don't even have time to play video games or watch anime anymore T___T). I think we all remember that those games were the ones that absorbed the most time. ^^ so much fun though

Un67 -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/3/2012 10:00:50)

Not necessarily. WA's FSGs are pretty good and don't take up that much time.

super dude -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/3/2012 10:54:07)

You've inspired me DoS... I shall design my own FSG... Could take me a couple weeks, maybe months, but I'll get it done eventually! Course it wont be a massively huge FSG though. I should have the time to design it, even if I only spend 10 minutes a day :P. Running it will be a different story, so I'll make sure I have the time to keep it going before I actually post it.

I have a request, if anybody has any archives of any previous FSGs on this forum it would be greatly appreciated, just so that I can use them as examples (Obviously nothing will be outright stolen, this is purely for educational reasons :P)

Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/3/2012 13:21:28)

Unfortunately my computer died. I have absolutely no files of any of my stuff, which I just realized MY PRECIOUS GAMES! T___T

EDIT: Adding on, that'd be cool, super dude! I'd be happy to see another one back on here, though time considering I may or may not try to play. ^^ Mafia is already a bad enough idea, I get extremely absorbed into the game.

Seriously... man. T_T There goes a piece of my life.

http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Masons_and_Mafia
I KNOW WE PROBABLY DON'T HAVE THE EXPERIENCE FOR IT, BUT I REALLY WANNA PLAY THIS SETUP

I wanna run the idea past some of the other players here before I try to start yelling about getting players to play. I'm unsure of how balanced the game will be for the Mafia; since the game is a skill for each individual Mafia member, it makes it a rather unusual game to play.

ANOTHER EDIT:
http://wiki.mafiascum.net/index.php?title=Lovers_Mafia

Lover's Mafia sounds like a good exercise for everyone to learn how to effectively scumhunt on their own. The Mafia can also communicate with each other more and learn how to be stronger as a functioning group, too.

liamliam1234liam -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/3/2012 14:07:00)

I would be open to either one, especially the former.

super dude -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/3/2012 14:15:49)

I was thinking of doing a possible Role Madness game of Mafia for the lulz, I must say I prefer moderating Mafia games to actually playing them. But Masons and Mafia was also on my list of possible variants of Mafia. But yeah, what do you guys think of Role Madness?

liamliam1234liam -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/3/2012 14:45:20)

The chaotic nature of it sounds fun. Need to throw in a Paranoid Gun Owner, by the way.

Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/4/2012 18:59:37)

I'd rather do Masons and Mafia, I never get day-action suddenly throwing the game into chaos. All I ever get to see are wild roleclaims and tantrums, never any sudden "Dayvig X dramatically shoots Y!" type random things. But I'd be open to a Role Madness game later if there's Vengeful Townies and other horribly unbalanced roles like unrestricted Dayvigs and maybe half a game of SKs.

super dude -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/4/2012 19:41:00)

I was also thinking about a possible Kingmaker game... Could be fun.

Kosefira -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/5/2012 6:19:15)

There was an official Mafia thread, but it got lost. Feel free to make another, but I recommend you get a game supervisor to make the Official Mafia thread. That person will be responsible for updating links to newer game versions and possibly listing the winners of each game.

1girlhousefan -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/9/2012 18:39:35)

There seems to be no GOTM yet. I think Kosefira's either waiting for someone else to vote, or someone to remove their vote, as it is a tie.

Or Kose just forgot...

Heroic Necro -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/9/2012 23:48:22)

Heads up to any GMs of Liam. He's gonna be gone for a week

steel blade -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/10/2012 10:45:14)

Thinking of re-running Strings? Anyone interested?

PBlades -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/10/2012 11:24:54)

Still as interested as ever.

super dude -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/12/2012 4:38:46)

If everybody can chip in for the Official Mafia thread with guides and/or information about the game, I can have a shot at running it, it will also be used for any Mafia games that I personally run as well, since I do plan on running as many as possible (Obviously anybody else that wants to run a Mafia game is more then welcome to do so and if he wishes can use the "Superthread" as well.)

If nobody has any objections to me running it, please PM me with any information or guides you will like included, once I feel I have enough I shall put it up.

Kosefira -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/12/2012 7:33:25)

GoTM slipped my mind. That, and part of our veranda was recently torn off by a storm.

Dawn of Shadows -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/12/2012 17:12:35)

That was a pretty nonchalant delivery. Did anything get damaged along with it?

Actually, super dude, what I was thinking would be a better idea was if we split the ruling for different people -- it makes it easier to keep alive if one person in charge drops out. I can find a couple links in particular I think would be important to get up there.. I'll inbox them to you at a later time.

Nartbor -> RE: UCaG Guide / General UCaG OOC / Welcome/Goodbye (6/12/2012 22:41:58)

I forgot to Mention but I am alive. Not dead. Few remember, I suppose but I had made the epic (if I do so say myself) game Battlefield. Old times... old times.
