superjars -> New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 12:04:05)

Hello everyone,
Welcome to the new face of the RP boards. This change has been a long time coming, but it is finally here. Over the last couple months that I have been the Head Mod for RP, I've been looking at the things that seem to be a problem: both things that you have brought up and things that my team and I have observed.

I wanted to create this post to enumerate some of the differences in these new boards versus the things you were used to in the old boards and then open it up to some questions about any specific things you are unclear on.

New Features:

1. Simplified process of graduating from the RPA: The Role Playing Academy was never intended to be the free-for-all RPing extravaganza it has been. It is intended to be a place to help members learn how to RP or to simply prove that they are a competent RPer *Note: we will not be testing you on your grammar, spelling or punctuation. If any of those is an issue, we will redirect you to L&L where they work on writing.*

Almost everyone (myself and my AK's Ryu and TD are excluded) have been removed from the Role Players group who was in there previously and the group was remade for this new change.

The new RPA will have three threads manned by myself and my AKs, within which you will be asked to create three separate posts in order to join the Role Players group and join RPs. These should be simple and straightforward and simplify the process that allows people into RPs with minimal fuss. Our goal is to have everyone RPing together.

2. The RP Archives: Everything was moved from the former forums and into the Archives. A lot of those RPs will likely never be resurrected, but we wanted to keep them for posterity. Everything from the RPA, the RP and the ARP got put together in there. However, for whatever reason, the forums decided to eat the RPA OOC stuff we moved there, so we may have to recreate some of that. Sorry for that, but there's nothing we can do about it.

But this doesn't mean that some RPs can't or won't be brought back. The Archives are currently a holding place while we rebuild the RP forums into something all of us can enjoy and share.

3. Limits on RPs and RPing and the Host system: A huge problem I've seen since I joined RP is that we get hit with waves of new RPs every couple days, some which get very little interest, some which garner great amount of interest, but die because the host disappears and some that garner interest but people are at their limits in terms of how many RPs they can be a part of.

So, we are going to limit the number of RPs that exist at one time: This will be a number based on the total number of active members in RP and will be examined on a monthly basis to see if we need to increase it. The starting number will be 6 RPs, which is enough for several people to be in four and still have a variety of RPs.

We will be looking at the number of RPs people are in and perhaps modifying those totals, but for now it will remain the same. RPs should be time consuming and so being in a large number of them can be detrimental to the quality of each one you are in.

In the same vein, we will be implementing a Host system, where we will limit who can host RPs. This will be based somewhat on talent, but much more on time constraints and dedication to being able to run an RP. In the future, we may also introduce some new threads in the RPA in order to give some training into what goes into hosting and how we can get better at it.

4. Branching out into other genres and worlds: One thing that I have gotten permission to do is to move away from the strictly AE nature of RPing on our forums and allow some different worlds to be explored. We'll have a thread in RP Discussion to talk about what we want to allow, and I'm thinking we'll have 2 of the 6 RPs be non-AE focused, if it is something people are interested in.

5. The RP boards: The RP boards are the only place where RPs will reside. Everyone who gains access to it will be participating together. No longer will we have several levels of RPers, but everyone will be together to RP. I am excited to see how we can grow our community into something amazing. We will be starting small at first, but as we gain members and branch out, I hope that we can grow and become a flourishing community of RPers.

Thanks for everyone who helped with this transition and I now open this thread up to questions that anyone may have about what I've hosted. I'll try to answer as much as I can, but there is a lot left to do to get this up and going and I have RL stuff as well.

So, we are going to limit the number of RPs that exist at one time

This is at the same time scary and good, since I've been inactive here for a long while because none of the RPs interested me, and all the different ones were hard to get people in.

Will I, for example apply for one of the six RPs, with a Discription of the Plot and so on, with it either approved or denied, or will it just be whoever makes the RP first gets the RP? And will there be measures taken to make the RPs not all be similar?

DaiTigris -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 12:34:45)

So I am curious about what other qualifications will need to be met in order to host. I'm imagining there would have to be a certain amount of Rp's participated in or something like that as well, will there be such restrictions? Also along those lines will we still be able to co-host?

kkutwar -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 12:46:02)

[We'll have a thread in RP Discussion to talk about what we want to allow, and I'm thinking we'll have 2 of the 6 RPs be non-AE focused, if it is something people are interested in.]

Will whole-cloth original material be allowed, or will it have to be existing material? That, and how will it be decided who gets to run one of the two non-AE role plays?

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 12:58:42)

I have a few questions that I shall list below:

Firstly, regarding the RPs Allowed at a Time Rule.

What if one or more of the RPs is progressing badly and an RPer/RPers can see this happening. Those RPers want to host their RPers but can't because the maximum limit is reached. Can they PM a Mod/AK in order to request a review of the badly progressing RPs so that those RPs may be dealt with in order to make place for the waiting RPers' new RPs?

Secondly, about the 4 RPs Joining Rule.

Actually, I've had this query since even before the revamping began. If an RPer has proved his mettle here in this boards and show a considerable display of talent, BUT, he has already joined his 4 RPs, can he perhaps PM an AK in order to request an extension in the limit of RPs he can join? Like upto 5 RPs or the like?

Thirdly, again about the 6 RPs Only Allowed Rule,

Will the AKs/Mods be reviewing the general conduct, progress and management of the Ongoing RPs on a weekly/monthly basis so that they can effectively remove defective RPs in order to make place for those that can work better?

And lastly, about the RP Host Criteria,

Can you please elaborate a bit more as to the selection of RP Host Criteria, if you already have it scaped out?
Do ignore if work on this aspect is still ongoing.

I also have a few suggestions that I think MIGHT help. Seeing as the Revamping is still underway, I felt this to be the perfect period to post them BUT I won't post them here as that would fail the point of this thread. Do consider putting up a Suggestions thread while work is still going on.

Thank You for your time.^^

black knight 1234567 -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 13:02:09)

Can we use worlds from other media/games/etc? if we can, i'll be the first guy to make a LotR RP, straight out :P

EDIT: Will all of us automatically become RPers? or all will have to go through the RPA?

superjars -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 13:26:39)

@Dragonman, we'll start with a couple of the old RPA threads people are interested in and then it will be applications from those members who are "hosts" which I will talk about in conjunction with Arthur's query.

@DaiTigris/Arthur, The host process has not been formalized yet, but as I said in the OP, it will be based on talent (seen through the RPA process) and also on availability and dedication. This original wave, we'll be relying heavily on the input we get from the RPA threads to make decisions on hosts.

@kkutwar, originality is always a bonus, and so original worlds and works, while still having to go past myself and the AK's will be allowed and embraced.

@Arthur, one of the reasons for limiting the RPs is making them simpler to moderate. With less threads to look at, we will be able to keep a tighter eye on all of the RPs running and poke hosts as needed.
Second, there's always been leeway for a 5th RP if an RPer shows the ability to handle it. PMing myself or one of the AKs is the way that can be done.

@bk 1-7, some worlds can be used, as long as there are no copyright infringement pieces to worry about.
Second, there will be no grandfathering in this go-around. All members will have to go through the RPA, although those who have already become them in the past should have no problems passing these new threads.

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 13:30:13)

Understood.
Thank You.

kkutwar -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 13:37:33)

What's the max rating that a RP can be? Because I have one I would like to consider for use, and the story itself is relatively clean but the manual for it gets kind of messed up at points (though I figured I would partially link to it, as in link to the area and then just state what it is here). So, basically can we get to full-blown PG-13 stuff?

Riprose123 -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 13:54:44)

I have two questions.

First of all, what of the people who graduated before the overhaul? I was accepted into the main boards around october of last year.

And second, what of the RP's that were still alive and kicking before the make over, like my own VA? Will they have to apply to be one of the six or will they be automatically counted?

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 13:57:39)

Uhh...
I have another question.

This one's regarding Gaidens of already existing RPs.

I wish to host a Gaiden on my RP, Vanguard Academy(created by me, now hosted by nield and Riprose123). Will that Gaiden be allowed into the 6 RPs or must it be integrated into the Vanguard Academy RP?

DaiTigris -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:00:53)

Thank you Superjars

superjars -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:01:11)

@kkutwar, the forums are PG and must be family friendly, and that is the limit of the forums.

@Riprose123, people who graduated before the overhaul will have to swing through the RPA again, but it shouldn't be too difficult for them.
Second, We'll have a thread in the Discussion about the RPs people would like to continue.

@Arthur, I'm not sure what you mean by Gaiden, but if it is a separate RP, it is a separate RP; we don't have sub-RPs that are parts of other ones.

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:05:58)

It's a Side-Story RP to Vanguard Academy. But I believe my question has been answered.

By the way, can I remove the Temporary tag next to the General Discussion Thread I created? Or will a new thread be created later?

superjars -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:12:54)

The General Discussion Forum probably doesn't need a General Discussion thread. People will be able to create specific threads to talk about specific topics. i.e. What kind of RPs do you want to see?, etc.

So, basically it is a spin-off RP?

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:18:52)

I see. I just felt the need to group a General Discussion together for words which didn't belong in any other thread. In my opinion, having too many threads increases the chances of a massive mess-up.
To sum it up in one sentence, I'll keep the Temporary tag on until further notice.^^

Yes, it is a Spin-Off RP. I was thinking if we could have a VA Superthread for both VA and VA: The Sinister Gaiden, as I call it. We can link both ICs to the Superthread. Can such a thing possibly be sanctioned?

Legendium -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:26:08)

quote:

Thank goodness. Our biggest problem was the overflow of RPs.

And Arthur, I think the best idea is to make it a part of the Vangaurd Academy RP. Like, combine the two.

And I do hope that the six will be of all types of RPs. Like, if all of the RPs are quest types, there will be at least one RP space saved for an academy style RP? As well as the free roam RPs.
Just a thought.

Jexorin Rast -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:31:26)

Now I'm a bit worried I won't be able to do my Coldness of War RP.

superjars -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/2/2012 14:38:20)

@Arthur, We'll be closing that thread in lieu of having more specific ones, especially since the same types of comments made here are also going there.

@Legendium, I'm all about having various types of RPs and I hope the community will agree with that as well. Glad to hear you have a similar interest.

@Link Junior1, there will be opportunities for many types of RPs.

black knight 1234567 -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/3/2012 5:17:52)

What exactly counts as infringing copy right grounds?

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/3/2012 7:21:45)

Again I am back, and with 2 questions this time:

The first one is exactly what Black Knight asked. Also, to add to that, are we allowed to bunny Organisations that have not yet been brought to light in animes/mangas/games etc.?
For example, in Fairy Tail, there exists a Guild called Tartaros that has only been named, no other information has yet been revealed about it. So can we bunny similar organisations?

Secondly, I would like to introduce the concept of a Superthread. Here's how it works, let's take the RPs Vanguard Academy and its spin-off, The Sinister Gaiden as examples. Can I/The Host make a superthread for Vanguard Academy RPs in general(only 2 expected for the near future, the ones named above)? We can make 2 ICs for VA and TSG linking both ICs to the VA Superthread where participating RPers can discuss both RPs?
Can we do that?

Legendium -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/3/2012 14:14:56)

Oh right. On the topic of copyright stuff, is my character for step one too much of a parody on Monty Python?

superjars -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/3/2012 18:06:20)

@bk 1-7/Arthur, infringing of copy rights is using a character or world that is owned by someone else without their express permission. Basically, if someone suggests a world they want to create an RP in, we'll have to find out the companies stance on things like fanfiction and the like (as that is what an RP in their world will basically be) and make a judgment based on that.

@Arthur, not sure what you mean by bunnying the organization, but it will depend on a case-by-case basis of what the owners of the franchise we are copying allows.
Secondly, Superthreads will not be allowed at this time. If you were to make these two RP's, though connected, they are two separate RPs with different members and different stories. They will use their own threads as well.

@Legendium, parodies are a whole different beast. Your bio looks fine from the skim through I did.

Arthur -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/7/2012 11:37:10)

Okay, this one's more RPer related.

Can RPers make their own Showcase threads in the RP GD wherein they will post a record of all their past RP Plots and of Concepts they wish to work upon in the future?(Should the RPer become a host)

They can also post alongside with the plots, the corresponding bio formats. No information regarding RPers who had participated in the RP, or their bios need be included in the showcase.

Furthermore, the RPer can post all his own character bios in the showcase itself.

And lastly, when the showcase is set and ready, the other RPers can come, see and express interest in any future concepts while reminiscing of the past ones. Of course, other RPers can post in the Showcase Thread.

Tags like (Showcase) at the beginning or end of the catchy/fancy thread names will suggest the thread's nature so as to avoid confusion on the part of potential viewers and posters. Mind you, this thread won't be for applying for listed concepts and RPs(That's still RPA OOC stuff), just a showcase to look at and ask questions about or commend.

In my opinion, it helps to personalize and organize the RPing experience so that nothing gets lost.

So, can we do this now that everything is new and revamped?

black knight 1234567 -> RE: New RP Boards Q&A (12/7/2012 13:33:53)

How long does it take to graduate from a phase in the RPA? and will you message the person after reviewing the bio? a problem in the old forum is reviewing people took alot of time, I remember seeing some posts dating back to August when we were in October.
