Prologue

"As long as I can remember... I get the feeling that I share some sort of connection with him"

- Aridance

It all happened so quickly. Houses burnt down to smoldering ashes. Townspeople losing their homes and loved ones in one man's fit of anger and madness. Fear struck them down, constricting any hope from their hearts. The mage rampaged across the village, one pair of the townsfolk decided to take a stand. Using any means necessary, a man and a woman, both members of the King's army, were ready to defend their home and their young daughter from this murderous mage. As he approached, the pair took their swords and stepped outside, ready to face him.

"Hm? What's this? A couple of King's little worms think they can hurt me? ME? HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! *cackle crackle* I'LL BURN YOU DOWN TO YOUR BONES!"
The mage charged at the pair. The man pushed the woman aside and yelled "TAKE ARIDANCE AWAY, FIONA! I'LL HOLD HIM LONG ENOUGH!" Reluctant, the woman ran to the house, understanding that they must put the safety of their daughter at first. As she ran upstairs to get her young child, she heard a devastating scream of pain. Knowing what had happened, she quickly took her daughter, ran downstairs and headed for the back door. As she got outside, the crazed man was already waiting.

"What's the rush, pipsqueak? The party is just starting! HAAAAAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!"
"I will not let your hurt my daughter! Step away!"
"Or what? You're gonna try and plunge that sword in me? Be my guest! Do not be taken by surprise if you find that metal stick melting long before it reaches me though! HAHA!"

As the mage shortened the distance between him and his victim, the woman attempted to flee back to the house and escape through the front. However, mere steps away from the door, the woman stopped dead on her tracks and turned around, just as a violent explosion consumed the house in its entirety, launching her and the child in air. Pieces of wood and stone shrapnel everywhere. The woman laid on the ground, having taken the brunt of the explosion to the back that resulted in fatal wounds and broken bones, including her right leg. Miraculously, the child was unharmed.

He approached.

"On today's menu; ONE CHARRED HUSBAND! HAHAHAHAHA!!! *cackle crackle*, the mage said, flinging the burned corpse of the woman's beloved next to her. "Well don't worry, I'll send you and that little brat straight after him! It'll be quick, but I can't guarantee it'll be painless! HAAAAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

As he formed a fireball on his fist, the woman was ready to accept her fate, pressing her young child against her body, hoping the flames wouldn't reach her.

He threw the ball but suddenly, a barely visible, ball shaped shield with a faint color of orange formed around the woman and her child, deflecting the fireball. The mage was both astonished and angered.

"What?! There is no way she could've deflected that ball without magic! Wait... It wasn't her... But that child..."

Though they averted a sudden death, it wasn't strong enough to deflect all the damage, and the woman suffered a bad burn on her back. The mage came right next to the woman, grabbed the child and silently inspected her. Suprisingly, the girl was still asleep.

"It must have somehow activated from her subconciousness..."

"GIVE ME BACK MY DAUGHTER!!!!" The woman yelled in pain and agony. Sparing only a glance to her, the fire mage turned away and began to walk, taking the child with him.

"STOOOOP!!!" The woman yelled. For her surprise, that's exactly what the mage did. "... This child now belongs to me. With you, her potential would dwindle and eventually fade. But with me... She will become something great... Hehehe..."

With that said, the mage began to take his leave. However, the woman would not have it. With her last ounce of strength, she stood up. Even a broken leg would not stop a mother from taking her child back. The mage stopped once more.
"Impressive. For a mere human. Takes extraordinary parents to have an extraordinary child, I suppose", the mage said with a belittling tone. "Seems to apply only to you, as your now-burning husband wasn't quite all that. HAHA!", the mage continued his sadistic banter. The woman picked up a broken sword and readied herself. She knew that with the burn on her back and a broken leg and sword, she'd stood no chance, and even without those her chances would not be any better. But for the sake of her child, she was ready to die.
"Give me... back... my daughter", she uttered in pain. In the blink of an eye, the mage appeared right in front of the woman, and plunged his scorching hand through her chest. "Not. A. Chance", he said, with a malicious grin on his face. "A-A... Ari...d-dance", she gasped as her last words, as her eyes grew colorless. The flame of her life now extinguished, the woman fell. "Hmph. Humans. Beings of such fragility and weakness should just learn their places and stay in them."

The mage began his journey towards his lair, with a burning village and countless dead in his wake, with only one young child as a survivor...

...

...

...

The mage arrived at his lair. The heat inside could make dragons sweat, the heavy, thick layers of smoke would choke any living creature. Creatures of flames and darkness roamed the tunnels, all bowing to the mage out of fear and respect. Reaching his 'throne', he sat down and began inspecting the child on his lap, silently watching her.

"This little runt... I can sense an unusually strong pyrokinetic power within her. Despite being a mere child, she possesses unimaginable potential. She will make a powerful tool for me to use against the Blue Mage, but it will take time to teach her the ways of pyromancy and how to fully control the flames. Yes, it will take time, but she will be my ultimate weapon!

"HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" The man's lunatic laughter woke the baby up, and she glared at the him. Hardly any expression could be seen on his face, but his blackened skull, surrounded by intense flames, would make anyone mad with fear. Seemingly unafraid of him, she began to laugh as she thought the fiery skull was amusing. Confused by the child's first impression of him, his own impression of the child's true power had yet to reach its conclusion.

"Now then, little ru- No... Aridance, right? That's right...", he lifted her up. "Xan is going to be your new daddy."

Chapter 1: The Four Commandments, Part 1

"ARIDANCE! WHERE ARE YOU?!" Xan was angrily yelling around his lair, looking for his apprentice. "If that little runt has run off again in to the woods, I swear I'll have the Triflames add anoth-" Suddenly, the young girl came barging through the doors riding a Tuskmonger.

"UNCLE XAN, LOOK WHAT I CAUGHT!" Aridance was heading straight to Xan on top of the wild beast, however, Xan was quick to react and simply created a shield around him, knocking the tuskmonger out when it hit it.

"Awww, what did you do that for?" Aridance questioned her master. Xan firmly grabbed the Tuskmonger by the tail, and threw it in a pit of lava. "HEY!!" Aridance yelled. "HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BECOME MY PET!" Xan glared at the girl and the pit. "Well, now he's your food. Hey you, fire elementals over there, go and fetch that smelly beast from the lava before it's blacker than the night sky." Aridance sat down in her chair next to Xan's throne and started sulking. "Why do you always do that to the animals I bring here?" She gave Xan an angry look. "Because, little runt..." Flames with a violent color of orange and red starting forming around Xan. "YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO GO OUTSIDE AND FETCH ANIMALS!!! YOU ARE TO REMAIN HERE AND TRAIN YOUR PYROMANCY!!!" he yelled. "O...O-okay... I get it..." Aridance said with a frightened look on her face.

Xan sat down on his throne, clearly angered and disappointed in his apprentice. "Aridance. Go to your chamber and rehearse the list of The Four Commandments." Aridance quickly took an disapproving look on her face. "AGAIN!? I've done that a thou-" With a single glance from Xan, she turned pale, staying her tongue. "Go... to your chamber... Now." Aridance quickly stood up and ran to her chamber.

"What am I doing here... Looking after a kid when I should be hunting down that blasted Warlic... But then again... She IS my most potential weapon so far... Just keep it together Xan. Soon, she will be ready for the next step in her training... " Xan smiled to his own thoughts with an evil grin.

Back in her chamber, Aridance was once again revising the list of The Four Commandments under the supervision of a Fire Elemental. Repeating the commands in her mind, she had to yet come understand the full meaning behind them, young as she was:

  • 1. OBEY. When given orders, you are to follow them flawlessly. No questioning, no hesitation. Consequences of disobedience will be severe and painful.
  • 2. MARCH. With the powers on your possession, you are to become a being more stronger than imaginable. You will become an unstoppable power, forever marching forward, while stopping at nothing.
  • 3. DESTROY. Fire is the element of destruction, pyromancy is the art to control that destructive force. Your powers were given to you so that you may spread that destruction wherever you roam.
  • 4. CONTROL. With your powers, you are shunned upon. Inferior beings will not welcome you, out of fear and hatred. That is why they are there only for you to control and manipulate. Do not form bonds. It is you and your powers alone.

The commands were sinking in to the young Aridance's mind, slowly but efficiently. "Only thing for me is Uncle Xan... If that stupid Warlic or whatever hadn't destroyed my village all those years ago like Uncle told me..."

*FOUR YEARS AGO*

"Uncle Xan? What happened to my mommy and daddy?" Aridance asked her "uncle" while sitting on his lap. At the age of 8, the child had spent six years under Xan's care, learning everyday skills from him. Staring at the walls of his lair, he didn't say a word for a moment. "They were killed. By a man named Warlic. The same man who... turned... me like this. That damned mage took everything I held dear from me. And he did the same for you. He's a cold-blooded murderer. You were lucky I found you alive from the burnt village, unharmed." Aridance sat silently. "But why did he kill mommy and daddy?" Xan looked at the child "For his own amusement... ... Listen kid. We are going to work together. You and I. And we are going to take him down. It'll take time, but I will teach you everything. Like I've taught you writing and reading and the dangers of the world. I will teach you magic, from the basics to the advanced techniques. Because you possess immense power within you. You may not realize it yet, but that power can be taken even further. With your hate. Hate you may not feel yet, but when you come to truly understand the things that Warlic has done... You will learn to despise and hate him with everything you have. And with your power and that hate... When you combine those, nothing will stand in your way."

Aridance stared at Xan, and gave him a smile. "Okay, Uncle Xan. Teach me all you have!"

At the present time, the pyromancers, both master and student, were readying themselves for the things to come.

Chapter 1: The Four Commandments, Part 2

Aridance was laying on the bed in her chamber, thinking about her past and trying to remember her parents. Like Xan had told, her hatred towards the man who supposedly took them away grew slowly, but steadily. "I wish Uncle Xan would teach me something new soon... He keeps telling me about these dormant powers I have and that I have to train my pyromancy, but in the past years he has only taught me how to form a basic fireball..." Suddenly, Xan appeared at her chamber's door. "Aridance. You know what happens when you break one of The Four Commandments. You disobeyed my orders and ventured into the woods. Now, come with me. After we've done adding another symbol and you've successfully lived through another three days and nights, we will train." Aridance was shocked. "Another symbol?! No, please, anything but that! I didn't even go deep in to the woods!", she pleaded, but Xan wasn't showing any signs of forgiving the girl. "Until you learn to follow the Commandments precisely, I WILL keep punishing you. Let's go." Aridance reluctantly got up from her bed and followed Xan.

They went in to another chamber, where there were three Fire Elementals waiting. Xan signaled Aridance to go the centre of the chamber, and the Fire Elementals bounded Aridance in shackles by the arms. "Lasair, we are ready. Raise the shackles", Xan said to one of the Elementals. He pulled down a switch, and slowly the shackles were being reeled up until Aridance was hanging in the air. "Tine, Sruthán. You know the process. Get to it." The other two Elementals took their positions behind Aridance, and put their hands together while facing each other. They closed their eyes, and started to focus. Violent flames spiraled around the Elementals as they gathered power, and suddenly they opened their eyes, both having a crimson color in them. Tine turned his head at Aridance's back, and the first half of The Symbol of Regret began to form. Aridance trembled, but held in her voice. Then Sruthán turned his head, looked at Aridance, and the second half was being burned on her back. "Hm. You're enduring the pain much better than you did for the first two times." Xan said. Aridance looked at Xan with teary eyes and Xan sensed her anger, responding back with a malevolent smile. "But we all know the real pain starts once we are finished." Aridance had already two symbols on her back, she got the first one at the age of eight, for running away from a small Fire Elemental who was her training partner during her first training periods, because she was scared of the Elemental, thus breaking the second Commandment. The second symbol was given to her for refusing to attack a Deft Minx Fairy while Xan took her to the woods for another training session, at the age of ten, breaking the first and the third Commandments. As the ritual came to an end, swift as it was, the shackles released Aridance and she fell down. Lasair picked her up and carried her to her chamber. "Now then... Let's see if she can go through it this time."

Aridance was waving around and trembling in pain on her bed. The Symbol of Regret heats up the body of the victim from the inside, bringing up the temperature to dangerous levels. This itself won't kill a mage, even an apprentice, as long as you can endure the pain, however should the victim give up and lose their strength to fight back, the symbol would burn them alive. Aridance barely survived the first time of this punishment considering she was only eight, and the second time was no easier. Three days without proper sleep, food or hydration, adding the excruciating pain from the symbol would be enough to kill a grown man...

On the morning of the third day, Xan yet again appeared at the chamber's door, accompanied by Lasair, and stared at the motionless body of Aridance. No words were spoken by neither of them. The symbol on her back was glowing with an intense crimson hue, indicating that it had reached the maximum temperature. Xan, with a still, cold look on his face, kept the silence in the air unbroken. "Dead. Hmph. Figures. Last two times she had managed to hold back the symbol so that it did not reach its full power, but now... Bah. Looks like I misjudged her potential. Now I'll have to find another tool...", he thought. "Lasair. Take the body." As the fire elemental approached, a loud gasp was heard. Xan turned around, and witnessed something close to a miracle. The young girl was barely breathing, but alive. "...er... Can... have some... water..." she muttered with her dried lips.

"... Ha... haha... HA! HAHAHAHA! So! The third time wasn't the charm? HAAAAHAHA! GOOD! VERY GOOD! Once you're back on your feet, we will begin the training!"

Chapter 2: The Next Step

Xan was sitting on his throne, thinking his next move. "Once she's done regaining her strength... The training will start. First... I'll have to gauge her current magic power. I've only taught her minor spells over the years, but her natural connection to magic, especially fire magic, has grown stronger as she has aged. It's possible she might already be able to handle more advanced spells... She'd better ready enough for the Triflame Trials. You just wait, Warlic... I'll have your miserable life burned to ashes... HAAAAAAAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" The maddening laughter echoed throughout the lair...

Back in her chamber, Aridance was feasting on the now-roasted Tuskmonger she brought to the lair earlier. Near at the brink of death after surviving through the three painful days and nights, some of her strength was initially restored through magic, but only enough so that she may stay concious for longer than ten minutes. She had then been eating and drinking non-stop for 12 hours, slept for another 12 hours, and so on for the past two days. While she was eating, she was also once again revising The Four Commandments on her own. "I'll let these rules sink in to my head so deep so that I'll never think of doing something stupid again... I hate the symbol... I hate having one being burned on me... I never want another symbol again. I have to try my best and follow these!" she thought. Xan appeared at her door. "Alright little runt, are you done stuffing yourself? It's time for you to take the next step in your training." Aridance sat up, looking on Xan with clear signs of malice towards him. "Hmph. I can feel her magical powers rising in conjuction with her anger. Looks like the whole symbol business is finally starting to bear fruit.", he thought to himself. "I asked you question, runt. Are... you... ready?", he asked once more. "I am", she answered, her malice slowly changing to determination.

Aridance followed Xan to the small arena below the throne, where Lasair, Tine and Sruthán were waiting. "Aridance, first we're going to see what you're capable as of now. Afterwards I'll decide if you're ready for the Triflame Trials." Xan had a menacing look when he glanced at Aridance. "And you better hope you meet my expectations... I'm through waiting." Aridance gulped. At one of the sides of the arena, over the lava pool formed a medium-sized fire ring. "Let's see how's your aim. Form a fire ball and throw it through that ring." Xan commanded. Aridance began to concentrate. When Xan had first introduced Aridance to pyromancy, he had taught her how to form the fire ball, but after that the girl had to learn some of the basic skills herself, such as a fire shield. However, forming the fire ball was easy for the young pyromancer, considering she learned from the best. She carefully aimed, and took the shot. The ball went through. Aridance jumped in the air out of joy. "Did you see that? Wasn't I good?" "Don't get too worked up little runt, you're still nowhere near a full-fledged pyromancer. Let's see if you can do better than that." The fire ring shrunk down, now about half of the original size. "Throw another one, this time through that." She was slightly unsure, but still began to focus forming a fire ball. "I still have trouble making the ball the size I want it to be... Let's hope this works out." She balanced her right arm with her left, carefully aiming to the ring. She released the ball, and it just barely fit through the ring. Aridance sighed in relief. "Hmph. Looks like you can't quite control the size yet, but it was small enough fit through. Alright, this time I want see how you continously project the fire out of your palm." Aridance quickly went pale. "U-um..." Xan looked at her impatiently. "Well?! What is it?" "I uh... doing the flamethrower... Is umm... slightly problematic to me..." Xan's patience was at it's limits. "DO IT. NOW!"

Aridance took her pose hesitantly, pointing her palm upwards. This time she focused all of her energy, and flames started to form around her. "I can't mess this up... I have to show Uncle Xan I can do it!..." The flames around her started to gather on her palm. Sweating and trembling, she tried to control the flames with all her might. However, the flames slowly vanished. Xan went mad. "WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?! CAN'T YOU EVEN MAKE A SIMPLE FLAMETHROWER?! USELESS!" He yelled, however Aridance wasn't quite finished. "Just... just keep... watching, Uncle Xan!" Aridance, still her palm pointed upwards, used the very last remains of her strength. Suddenly, a massive flame bursted out of her hand. The flames were licking the ceiling and eating through the rock. Xan was in awe. "HAAAAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!! YES!!! WONDERFUL!!! SIMPLY WONDERFUL!!! SUCH MAGNIFICENT FLAMES!!! HAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" However, Aridance was not so joyful. "I can't... control it..." She was having trouble keeping her feet, as the fire grew bigger and more intense, pushing her back. "I CAN'T KEEP IT U-" Without a warning, a small explosion from her arm blasted her against a wall. "Get her on her feet! We don't have time to waste!", Xan commanded Lasair.

Lasair helped Aridance to get up. "I'm still... *heavy breathing* not able to control it... It's too intense" the girl said. "Hah! A small setback comparing to how far we've already progressed! With this, you can take on the Triflame Trials, and you're one step closer to becoming my ultimate weapon!!!" Xan quickly realized what he just said. "Weapon?" Aridance was confused. "I uh... What I meant was... Erm..." Xan tried to fix his words. "But..." "... Wait a second... Why am I bothering trying to explain myself to her? It's not like she can do much about it... She's dependant on me, far more than I am on her", he thought. "Yes, a weap-" Xan began, before being interrupted. "Weapon or not... If that's what it takes for me to learn everything to take down Walric... I'll do it". Xan looked on Aridance with a puzzled look. "... HA! HAHAHA! Well said! Only under my training can you hope to defeat him! Now then, little runt! Time for you to take on the Triflame Trials!"

Chapter 3: The Triflame Trials Part 1: Alargamento

"Uncle Xan? What exactly are the Triflame Trials?" Aridance asked Xan as they descended further into the fiery lair. "It will be a true test of your potency as a pyromancer, runt. Lasair, Tine and Sruthán will take part of it. You'll learn the rest of the details soon enough. " Aridance was unsure what to make of Xan's response, but she was not wavered. Her determination to become a top-class pyromancer and avenge the death of her parents was unyielding.

"We're here" Xan said as they reached a large cavern, a place Aridance had not been in before. "If you don't want to drop dead, form a minor barrier around yourself", Xan commanded Aridance. No questions asked, Aridance did as told. Mighty statues of flame elementals surrounded the caverns, and the air was thick with smoke and poisonous gasses. Not a place for normal humans to be in, but then again, the current visitors were anything but normal. A vast space of emptiness in the middle of cavern opened before Aridance, who held a confused look on her face. "I wonder why this place is so empty?", she thought to herself. Soon she would find an answer to that question.

Xan headed towards the middle, with Aridance on his tail. As they moved forward, Aridance noted they were surrounded by a river of lava, so they were standing on something akin to an arena, similar to the one they had been in earlier, except far more enormous. Reaching the center, Xan came to a stop, and he turned to face Aridance.

"This is it, runt. The Trials will be held here. For that, I have this for you", Xan said, and conjured an old tome out of thin air. "I discovered this tome in my search for a way to... annihilate... that cursed Warlic. Take it." As the book levitated in front of Aridance's face, the girl studied its exterior. Covered with nothing but dark, reddish leather, the book had an aura of heat surrounding it which grew more intense as Aridance grabbed it. "It's warm for some reason..." She muttered. "It's an ancient tome, from times far before mine or yours. It took some time, but I was able to learn that it belonged to a fairly skilled pyromancer. It contains powerful magic, and while it is not the strongest tome of pyromancy in existence... It is still very potent. It is called Alargamento, and it will be your tool, your weapon, for years to come. Combined with your natural talent, as a pyromancer you will know no bounds", Xan explained excitedly, with a frantic look on his face. Aridance opened the book, however what she found was unexpected. "Uhm, Uncle Xan..." she said in a worried tone, "The book is empty..."

And empty it was, without a spit of ink to cover the old pages. Xan sported a malevolent smile. "Heheheheeeee... All part of the show, runt."

An uneasy feeling began to take hold of Aridance...
