It's been a while since I post on these forums O.o Work got to me I guess :/ In any case, I've been waiting for someone to make a thread like this ^_^ I think a lot of people feel very strongly for this game. So here: I made my account the first day AQW advertised EpicDuel. I got founder as quickly as possible and really enjoyed all the classes at the time. It was a simple game, with a simple community and simple mechanics; everything needed to create a great game. Beta was somewhat interesting. A lot of changes were made, some very beneficial, some... not so much. All in all? It was fun. Gamma was hectic. I think that it was at this point that everyone realized this game has great potential to make a LOT of money. If done right, I wouldn't be surprised if this game surpassed AQW. What happened? Well the focus of income and making players join became far more important than the actual gameplay. The gap became more notable between F2P and P2P players. Great names started to emerge from the 1v1 and 2v2 boards, which were players who essentially payed to win. Gamma brought a lot of imbalances, and I don't think anyone realized what we were doing. Note that this is not the devs' fault. We, as the community, are supposed to help, contribute, and support changes made and give constructive criticism. Instead, we sat back, complained blindly and whined about pretty much anything that didn't please us. Balance also began to go amiss. Mercenary had Support Merc, Tech Mages had Support Mage, and Bounty Hunter had Strength. The solution proposed by the community and executed by the devs? NERF EVERYTHING. Tech mages took a HUGE blow with the heal nerf and Mercenary ceased to exist until Omega. Lastly, enhancements gave players who payed an even GREATER advantage and just threw balance out the window. In short: Gamma: Gap, Pay to Win, drastic imbalance. Delta arrived at the peak of this crisis. I think we all hoped, with the allure of new classes, we'd see a reshuffling of imbalance and hopefully attain something close to it. Big mistake. Strength Tactical Mercenary was arguably the most powerful build to exist in this game. Players could put in 50 wins a minute with it, and there was no build that could even compare, but Bounty Hunter almost did. Tech Mage, Cyber hunter, and Mercenary were all sitting in hell at this point. The only solution was to nerf, AGAIN. Throughout Delta we just saw a back and forth of OP classes. Blood Mage had it's five minutes of fame along with Dexterity Tech Mage (which, by the way, I will never forgive the devs for nerfing). Cyber Hunter was pretty good at one point, and after including plasma armor, it was almost overpowered. What happened though, was all of us who bought varium (I'm talking $200+) became unbelievably overpowered. There was just no way to balance this game out in the slightest, so the solution was scratch everything and go with a clean slate: Omega. I have to admit I liked Omega. For a little while it felt like the "good ol' days". It took me a while to realize how bad things were. The community had essentially torn itself in half: Players who wanted balance and actually believed in the good of the game, and then players who wanted all the wrongs corrected, this being mostly the non-varium community. I'm not blaming them at all, but the line "pay to lose" became rather popular at one point. We who carried this game on our backs by paying hard earned money repairing cars (that's what I did, anyway), flipping burgers, or begging our parents were tossed out into the cold with no reconciliation. This is when I stopped playing the game completely. There are a lot of things you can fix, but a broken community is not one of them. I've been reading the forums and logging in for 20 minutes every other day or so, and I can say I think things are better. Varium still has an advantage but isn't completely upsetting the balance, non-varium players still lose but those who take time to study builds and create new strategies tend to go remarkably positive. The game seems to be holding a "stable" amount of players (at least we haven't seen a massive depression in player count), and the classes all seem to be even. ED is advancing rather nicely with releases and updates, and I think I can say this is the best Epicduel has been in a LONG time. Players are obviously upset that they don't get their 99% win rates, and to them I say grow a pair and learn to build. There's no such thing as perfect. Ultimately? With all the ups and downs, we've seen a growth and maturity not only in the devs but in the community as well. Guys, we're ALMOST starting to resemble a proper gaming community :) I hope people agree with me, but I know most won't. Telling the truth has never really gone well with this game...
