Chosen 0ne -> Factions And Their Use (11/3/2013 16:53:16)

Hello everyone, this is a thread about Factions and what everyone thinks of them at their current state, along with where we want them to be in the future.

Back in 2009 when I first joined I didn't know what factions were. I thought people just put names under their characters for fun. The first one I joined was called The Dark Knights. I was extremely excited to be apart of a group of players that battled together. The officer that recruited me helped me through the lower levels up until level 17. It was him that showed me where to get an aux. Back in my day the first aux was available at level 15, and it was a standard weapon everyone got. The founder never went online so I could never get the officer position I deserved, so I quit.

I joined a few after this and then a huge release for factions came. This was the new Faction HQ. This was an excellent release because there was finally a place for people to meetup for meetings and not be disturbed by other players. Anyone else remember faction meetings in houses?

Features were coming for factions pretty frequently and it kept things interesting. The devs even talked about Founder stepdown and whatnot. The flags and tokens became a huge part of factions as well, because after that your flag would actually mean something.

Along the course of Epic Duel players have felt like they should leave. Sometimes we would think, "I dont want to log in today."

SO what made us log in?

Factions. Factions and their daily win reqs. The fear of being kicked. This is what gives us all an incentive to play. It is because of this that a lot of players are still here today. Factions are the backbone of gameplay. People get wins for their factions and win dailies for them. They are what give this game meaning and value. Theres also a huge amount of respect thats had in wearing the name of a successful faction.

So what happened?

Eventually features for factions stopped coming in. We got war cannons after people wanted more stuff to do with their guild of friends. This was ridiculously fun but it costed a ton to use.

That feature is gone now and since then factions havn't changed very much at all. What we need is a new thing for factions to do. That's what this thread is about. What can we do to help the backbone and core of Epic Duel become better. Because it is these factions that give us all reason to play everyday.

I myself have made over 30 different factions, and being a leader, these are some things that could make the experience we have with factions better.

The first one is a credit pot. What is this you ask? The credit pot is something that would be avaible in the HQ that players in the faction donate too. Using these donations the leader can buy upgrades for their HQ. Upgrades include different locations, fortresses, rooms, and furniture. Additionally NPCs that can be added for retraining and whatnot. Maybe a room where you can battle from that adds double the influence, whatever.

The next one I think would be beneficial to the Leaders of factions is a messaging system that effects everyone online. And there are a few things to add to it. The first feature of this is faction private chat, which is self explanatory. The 2nd of which is a message that the leader types in from the faction page that gets displayed over the screen of all the players. This can be set to go off every hour, 30 minutes, whatever. It will say things like, "Keep up the good work everyone!" Or it could provide daily inspriational messages. This could also be used to remind playes of events. "Faction meeting at 4:00 Pm server time!" This goes in the same place where it says the admin has kicked you.

Anyways, discuss, what are some things factions need right now? What do you like? What don't you like? What do you think of factions in general?

Let's try not to discuss conflicts between different factions and mention names whilst doing so. Have fun.

~Chosen

Noobatron x3000 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/3/2013 17:29:48)

Never seen the point in factions never will unless the game gets a pve aspect a massive influx of players, constant fresh content . Unless all of the above happen ill never stay interested in this game long enough to commit to a faction.

Shajun Ki -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/3/2013 17:31:37)

I must say these are some great ideas chosen! I myself don't care much for factions anymore since the most respectable faction leaders/factions have retired and because as you mentioned above, there haven't been much faction improvements/features. I dislike
the new faction system because it spreads everyone out and causes people to be less social with each other. I feel that competition between factions is very low, I never see anyone speaking of other factions and how they admire them or brag that they're better or more active than most of the
top factions.

Pemberton -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/3/2013 21:22:13)

In beta and gamma, factions were really competitive but DEVS did not improve faction system and never gave any incentive and REAL REWARDS for the top factions.
THere is no point improving the faction system now because there are no more BIG factions. DEVS missed the window of opportunity.

Thylek Shran -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/4/2013 2:40:27)

I made a few submissions how to make factions better in the past.
Here is one of them:

quote:

Faction officers should be able to kick regular members to assist the leader.
There should also be an option for a co-leader beside the founder who has
the same rights than the founder. The member with the most wins should
automatically become the co-leader. This would prevent factions not being
able to kick members and officers because their founder has stopped
playing ED.

A fact is that factions donīt have a real goal beside the leaderboards and
increasing the faction rank. Factions wars could be nice and everything else
where factions members have to work together. Maybe also the option to
decorate the faction headquarters and that the faction level could be visible
in the headquarters: Lower faction level = smaller headquarters and less
decoration items. Also special features and shops that unlock at special faction
levels would be interesting: Weapons, armors, faction banners that could be
worn in battles, vehicles, robots, headstyles, faction uniforms, etc.

It really would be nice if players could show their faction banner or colours
somehow in duels. Atm all you can see is the faction name and custom titles
for founders and officers.

Therril Oreb -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/4/2013 3:27:38)

It is good you want to discuss factions and their uses. But do not turn this into a suggestion thread. Suggestion threads will be deleted.
Suggestions can be made in EpicDuel Suggestions

kaiseryeux21 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/4/2013 4:06:52)

i used to consider faction as one of the feature of this game that has so many potential to improved. Alot of suggestions had been brought up by so many players. The dev's somehow even mention about implementing something like founder step-down but it was gone with the wind. As what other players said, they miss the window of opportunity.

charwelly -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/4/2013 4:48:16)

I mainly use factions to chat and like to check me influence activity.

Ahhhhhh I remember back in beta as a lvl 25 making a faction called Black Legion and we came 2nd 1 time on the 2v2 leaderboards which made my day haha pretty lame huh.

LatinLover/Martini -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/4/2013 11:28:36)

@thykek officers kicking could give people the opportunity of destroying someone else's faction which is a terrible idea

nico0las -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/5/2013 20:26:18)

Your story about the Dark Knights and the creation of faction HQs is honestly my most nostalgic memory of a video game.

I honestly miss what factions used to mean. They were way more than just a group of players that battled together under the same flag; it was a fraternity where everyone worked together to represent themselves.
Until Death Syndicate X appeared, factions were just groups of friends hanging out together and battling (admittedly, some like Three Stars and a Sun battled a LOT). After DSX appeared, we began to realize what a faction can really be.
Factions like DSX or CaD were so dominant, they essentially controlled the game. I don't know if anyone else remembers, but when DSX reached its peak, it was pretty much God in ED. Every day, all day, their players would be harvesting wins.
I think this is what killed factions. They became more about winning and dominating than about fraternity and teamwork.

What do factions mean now? Nothing. Whatever factions used to be is dead now. Faction leaders now strive for one thing: Winning. Obviously, this was always the purpose, but back then there was much more meaning to it.

This is just what I feel. I haven't joined a faction in so long since I don't feel like being harassed for wins. Maybe that's just be, but hopefully some people agree?

I really miss the war. I miss war cannons, war kills, influence, all that. I really wish we could bring that back, but I know we can't.

Mother1 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/5/2013 20:49:28)

While I didn't start in beta or gamma, When I first started I did see some very dominant factions, and while leveling up I wanted so much to be in quite a few of them. Heck myself even created a faction back before the infernal war started and got the experience of running one. But alas since things have changed so much most factions especially older ones are now retired or dead. While a few of the older factions are starting to come back to life, their is little to no incentive for most to play.

What I would suggest is making it so factions members can once again see the amount of wins they are pulling in individually for 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, and Juggernaut. I remember that was something that really motivated me back when it used to be like that.

Pemberton -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/5/2013 21:44:31)

Yeah I remember when 3 Stars and a Sun won all day everyday for months and years. And they did when no build was overpowered. Good times. I call them Beasts of Beta.
Then I also remember Death Syndicate X and they were just winning dailies like taking a candy from a baby. I call then Gods of Gamma.
These 2 factions were like Chicago Bulls with Jordan or Floyd Mayweather.

Chosen 0ne -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/7/2013 0:20:03)

^^ Let's not forget other cool beta factions like The Black Nights of Chaos. I was never in that but that was also a name that came with pride.

One of my favorite memories of a faction I wasn't in was when CAD saved tokens for 6 months and put them all into one flag. Oz central station, the place where all the cool kids hung out had a flag with 200k tokens on it. It was then that we knew who the real owners of Oz were. Handed down from Three Stars and a Sun to CAD. Good times.

Other cool beta facitons include all 7 of Beastmos old ones. Fun times.

nico0las -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/7/2013 0:54:23)

@Above
I laughed so hard when I saw that flag with almost 300k tokens on it. They really liked making sure everyone knew who was in charge...

I like looking at all the big factions now and remembering when they had just gotten started. Legion Kings, Meganet, Guaps (the first one), CaD....
Good times.

charwelly -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/7/2013 2:12:17)

I also remember some great factions I remember Sacred Champions, I loved them strived to be like them.
Also factions like Why so Blue just chill who were also awesome. Then of course Renegade masters who were pretty good, and also Zero blood.

SCAR -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/7/2013 14:54:43)

What I first would like to do is reply to some of the ideas I have seen on this thread, and go from there.

First of all I think if officers were able to kick other players, it would cause a lot of confusion for the leader, I know being a leader myself I wouldn't know who to blame, I personally think it's an awful idea. Now, I've seen some ideas about a ranking system, well, I think that there definitely needs to be some more faction ranks, such as a "Co-Leader" which I think is a good idea, I don't think officers should be able to delete messages put onto the faction message board, only the Co-Leader or a higher rank than officer should be granted the access to do that, I've put messages in the past for the rookies to see to give them some input on what they require for the faction, and had all of those messages deleted by a officer I assume, if there is a Co-Leader rank, obviously there should only be one Co-Leader, but that goes without say, because after all, they're the Co-Founder, in saying all of this, there should also be a General Rank, maybe not called General, it could be another given name, but I think as I have put down numerous times already, there should be more faction ranks, to indicate that people in the faction are doing a worthy job, it might also be interesting to see a rank that only one player could achieve, maybe a MVP Rank? Where the player who has the most influence in the faction is automatically assigned to that rank, as I have read something of that in this thread, I do agree with it, I know if I was a member in a faction who had the most influence, and was assigned to a rank indicating my success, well I'd feel pretty proud of myself. I have read things about a faction war? Not quite sure what to add to that, though I think it's a neat idea, maybe there could be a specific game mode for the top faction's of the day, like for say, the top daily faction's could verse each other? Now I will add as I have read, faction improvements, I do admit it would be pretty cool if whenever your faction leveled up in level, it could unlock new faction item's for your faction to use, such as decorations, npc's that you could retrain from, a battle system inside the faction where you and faction members could train your skills together, all of that seems pretty cool to me, every level for your faction, your faction's base could improve in size, being able to wear symbols of your faction on armor, or weapons in general, well that'd not only be neat, but it'd really put your faction out there, and show that you have pride for your faction, and I'm sure as with level, being able to donate varium or credits could have a big part in faction gear, decorations, base size, and so on. And though as I have also read for this being a suggestion, I think this would've been more proper in the suggestion thread, but at the same time this idea is a massive discussion it's self, I hope this thread doesn't get locked, though I'm pretty sure it won't. And I also agree that it would be nice to see faction kills, instead of influence, I'd sure like to see how many kills I have, or my members have, instead of seeing influence, kills to me are much more prideful and competitive than influence is. And yes I do agree faction's are a huge part of why I still play this game, they give me more purpose to play, and they're just great and fun in general. Also I will say that, well I'm not trying to sound superior than everyone else is, but I know for a fact that me and "Mother1" are both picky people, and I think that since you have us both agreeing, this thread should be in good hands, at least I do think Mother1 agrees with this idea, it is very good, I kind of sigh every time I sign onto the forum's cause most ideas really aren't that great in my eyes, but I know this has been suggested before, but the way you put this really strikes out the thunder I think, anyway I really do agree with this idea, I personally think it takes the cake. And I will add one final thing, I have read people talking about good faction's, and their favorite faction's, I think "Legit" was the best faction, and it's always been a dream of mine to join them, as silly as that sounds, I just really admired them back in the Beta phase, it'd still be nice to join them now, though I think they're pretty died out now, it's a shame really. Long story short, I fully Support this.

goldslayer1 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/9/2013 11:09:27)

i personally dont agree with the idea of officers being able to kick.

the way i see the officer spot, is more of a high ranking member (prestigious member, etc) of the faction.
but management duties should be on the leader and co-leader.

A co-leader (with same powers as the leader, except for disbanding) spot would make much more sense.

Pemberton -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/10/2013 19:56:28)

Faction leader should have all the power. After all, it is his varium spent for that faction.

goldslayer1 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/10/2013 22:50:20)

@pember
and what if the leader wants the power to give someone who trusted a position of power? like co-leader.

its like officer spots, no one forces you to make officers. you can have 1 leader and the rest of the players listed as "members" and no officers.
its been done before.

Pemberton -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/11/2013 3:35:26)

the current leader-officers is perfect. there are bigger and better things to fix in this game before this founder step-down thing.

goldslayer1 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/11/2013 20:59:26)

quote:

the current leader-officers is perfect.

it is far from "perfect".
if its not evident by the amount of complaints received through out the year, then it should be evident by the amount of factions that die off because a single leader cant manage the whole faction 24/7. or the amount of factions (old LB factions included) that disband.

quote:

there are bigger and better things to fix in this game before this founder step-down thing.

these "bigger" things that need fixing (Balance), have been receiving updates since as far as i can remember, yet nothing is balanced. sounds like they're wasting their time.

i should probably remind you though that they did promise Faction Founder Step-down back in beta.
they recently said it isn't possible now, but im sure they can remedy the issue with Co-Leader.

Mother1 -> RE: Factions And Their Use (11/11/2013 21:06:12)

Factions took a huge nerf the moment they removed the war cannons, and change the way they worked for the infernal war. The moment wins were stopped being displayed, and influence took it's place was when I noticed the huge drop in faction activity.

What made it even worse was this new war system that came with the Dreaded war. I remember before flags were really hard to capture and required time and effect to do so. Now I can capture some points with just one or two battles worth of influence. It is really a shame if you ask me.

What they need to do first is revert this influence thing and go back to displaying wins. That IMO motivated a lot of players into fighting since you knew how many wins you got within that faction.

@ goldslayer1

I remember the reason Charfade gave for why they couldn't do that. The security issues with that were the issue. Meaning if they put this into play, someone could destroy the faction the Founder had made because they got the power to do so.

i personally didn't like the war cannons for factions, it made WDs pay to win.
but its substitute wasn't really better either. and yes, the infernal war did mess with alot of factions.
i personally preferred the old beta WD system where each top faction of the alignments won (meaning #1 for exile and #1 for legion, so it was 2 WDs)

and while i liked the influence change because it took juggernaut and team wins into account, i also didn't like how they removed the wins.
which goes back to the infernal war, players who only did say, 3-4kk wins, were having as much influence as players with 20-30k wins in the faction.

you can thank the pansy players who complained about flags being too hard to capture back then.

because 5-6 months of token saving and hard work shouldn't be hard to capture by players who've only played a week.
*rolls eyes*

quote:

i kinda of agree with this. and now you even have those +5 influence cores which masks your activity even more.

while i liked how team and jugg wins were taken into account, i did not like how the influence eventually played out.
its one of those 'good idea, bad implementation' situations again.

quote:

I remember the reason Charfade gave for why they couldn't do that. The security issues with that were the issue. Meaning if they put this into play, someone could destroy the faction the Founder had made because they got the power to do so.

but thats kind of the point of founder step down, its to step down your position and give your power to someone else.
if you were going to disband your faction, does it really matter if the person you gave the faction to disbanded it later on?

most factions die because the leader either disbands or quits the game, this is why there have only been a couple of serious factions in ED. because rare few are dedicated towards the faction for the long run.

however if there was a 2nd power position (co-leader, or founder step down) then the leader could share some of his faction responsibilities with someone else as well.

some things/updates i feel factions need, are listed here in a thread i made a couple weeks ago.
http://forums2.battleon.com/f/tm.asp?m=21475341
(Google Docs link, under "Faction Improvements")

there i gave some sample pictures and details of how these things could be implemented. (such as Co-Leader, Win Counters, notebot, etc)
