Shameless Self Indulgence

Prepare to party! This week, celebrate the birthday of EpicDuel's resident artist/assassin: Nightwraith. New missions, new weapons, and revamped skills await for your celebratory needs! As if that weren't enough reason to celebrate: the winners of the Creative Carving Contest will be announced in-game at Elon Musk!

Back to Party Business
Visit me at my usual haunt in the Wasteland to investigate my stash of weapons and armors! Do you have your OneX6 Keys? No? We've got you covered -- you can either buy one directly or win one by completing a new mission. Be warned: I've been buffed to level 36 so I'm not the pushover I used to be!

[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/NightWraith_BH_lowres.jpg[/image]

The classic birthday missions are also returning, with a few new additions in case you've already completed the old ones. Complete them all for huge rewards!

Suggestion Shop
In addition to hunting bounties and weaving baskets, I (Nightwraith) am EpicDuel's lead artist, but I don't mind sharing the spotlight with aspiring artists. That's why we're combining my birthday celebration with the introduction of a new round of suggestion shop weapons, created from ideas submitted from our creative EpicDuel community!

[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/Suggestion_shop_DNs.jpg[/image]

It's been way too long since we've done a shop like this so we're really going all out. We hope to have over 12 new weapons culled from the best of the best suggestions. Charfade and I are working as hard as possible to deliver more, but this is a thoroughly packed release. The weapons are still in progress so check back for a full list of items and their associated artist after we go live. If your suggestion was not selected, that does not mean it was terrible or we hate you -- it just means it may have to wait for the next suggestion shop. Hopefully it won't take a full year to do another one!

Arcadia
It wouldn't be a proper birthday without a new Arcade Game!

[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/NightwraithsNightmare_DNs.jpg[/image]

Horrifying! Give it a spin and be the first to claim the grand prize! As with other games, Nightwraith's Nightmare will introduce it's own new evolving achievment and leaderboard!

Cheevo Counter
Speaking of achievements -- we now have tracking for many of the daily achievements like the 1v1 and 2v2 automatch daily winners. Players who win the daily achievements multiple times will increment their number on the appropriate achievement.

Active Update
To address balance this update, we will be tweaking a few energy numbers from last week's update, but we also have a far grander change in store: Converting all passive skills into active ones.

[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/skill_revamp_dns2.png[/image]

That means Blood Lust, Reroute, Deadly Aim, Shadow Arts, and all the Armor skills will be converted into active skills. Blood Lust and Reroute will become Mark of Blood and Battery Backup respectively. The purpose of this change is to add strategy to battle. Currently, passives grant HUGE benefits with little sacrifice, especially for level cap players. Active skills require more sacrifice in terms of energy cost and turn cost. To compensate for these sacrifices, the effects of the skills will be modified. This change will affect all classes so we're really interested to see what new strategies emerge from this change.

Adrenaline
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/adrenaline_dns.JPG[/image]
  • Adrenaline
    • Replaced with Adrenaline Rush. Adrenaline Rush instantly grants the target a percentage of their maximum Rage.

Hybrid Armor, Mineral Armor, and Plasma Armor
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/armors_dns.JPG[/image]
  • Hybrid Armor
    • Hybrid Armor now increases the target’s Defense and Resistance by a percentage of their base Defense and Resistance (the portion from your Dexterity and Technology) for 4 turns.
  • Mineral Armor
    • Mineral Armor now increases the target’s Defense by a percentage of their base Defense for 4 turns.
  • Plasma Armor
    • Plasma Armor now increases the target’s Resistance by a percentage of their base Resistance for 4 turns.

Reroute
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/battery_dns.JPG[/image]
  • Reroute
    • Replaced with Battery Backup. Battery Backup grants the target an immediate boost to Energy, and doesn’t cost the user anything to cast.

Deadly Aim
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/parasite1_dns.JPG[/image]
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/fire_dns.JPG[/image]
  • Deadly Aim
    • Deadly Aim was replaced by two new skills: Fire Scythe for Tech Mages, and Energy Parasite for Blood Mages

BloodLust
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/markofblood_dns.JPG[/image]
  • BloodLust
    • Replaced with Mark of Blood. Mark of Blood leaves a mark on the target for 3 turns, granting lifesteal to anyone that attacks the marked target.

Shadow Arts
[image]http://www.epicduel.com/images/cms/shadowarts_dns.JPG[/image]
  • Shadow Arts
    • Shadow Arts now casts the target in shadow and reduces all damage they take by a percentage for 2 turns.

Everything in the update looks good, but I am still worried about that passive to active change. I just hope it was done correctly and the compensation they gave doesn't destroy all but the builds that didn't or don't rely on passives.

axell5 -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 10:58:31)

i am 100% thining like mother, i mean, everything seems good but the active/passive change scares me a little because what if it RUINS the builds that rely on them? i see about shadow arts as too OP(what other ppl say and not me) but wbu the armors? the blood lust and reroute? Hope it isn't a too dramatic change an doh the cores will require less energy? AWSUM! and really looking forward to nightwraith missions... level 36? Well... more chalenging than before is what i can say

Therril Oreb -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:19:41)

It will be like the EP cost for cores. It is a bgi change, many builds will be ruined. But new and more strategies will open for everyone.
Don't be discouraged by this, don't think this ruins the gameplay. It is another big change in the balancing of classes. So before complaining, think in advance what might be viable new ways to work on this.
Those able to adapt are those that will succeed and rise in the ranks.[:D]

Ranloth -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:23:11)

I'm hoping turn cost is enough for the revamped passives. It allows any build to take advantage of (technically) new skills without depleting your Energy pool, which is also limited. Strategizing is one, but when one skill can destroy all strategy (read: EP draining) then we've already got an issue.

Especially after the Cores change, which deplete our Energy. Too many things relying on Energy would end up being an overkill with low Energy pool which we have now.

Therril Oreb -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:29:33)

EP draining is indeed a very strong skill here. It can destroy any strategy. Especially in short battles that will only take a few rounds before it is decided.
What can be done to this?

-Nerf Ep draining. Lower how much it takes, bigger Ep cost, longer cooldown, you name it. But imo, this is not a solution. Not in long term

-Change the way of battles: This might be something different. But what would people think of changing the fights themselves? Give a standard EP regen to all classes for example (but certain classes more then others)
Or increase how Health is calculated. Longer battles will change the way skills work.

There are many ways to make fights more interesting.
With all passives gone, you could say EP is more scarce and important then anything else. So feel free to think and suggest for this.

Mother1 -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:35:44)

@ Therril oreb

I still think the way I think because guess what? There are some overused builds that barely rely on passive that will get a buff from this. Strength support TM is a good example. At the cap even with cores costing energy they still have so much left over energy that they wouldn't need reroute. As for deadly aim they lose about 4-9 damage, but other than that this build is hardly affected offensively.

Now let's look at another build that uses passives. Focus blood mage. Most of them I see right now require stredegy to work since they work with their passives. However this build get 2 hard nerfs since they will need to take a turn to active their passives where as strength support TM wouldn't need this.

But then again I could be wrong, But there is still that thought that lingers.

Therril Oreb -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:37:55)

Let's first see what the new skills will be. Who knows, maybe the skills might be a buff for some classes ^^

Ranloth -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:41:06)

Neither would work, probably, since some classes would remain at a disadvantage. BMs don't have Energy draining nor return, and cores also cost Energy - heavily at a disadvantage if new passives will cost Energy.
Since new skills won't have to be maxed for full benefit - like passives are now - it will result in more free skill points, therefore even a nerf to EP-draining skills could be in vain, but upset many players. And as you've said, it's not a long term solution.

Turn cost should be enough to balance passives, without Energy cost. One could argue Energy cost could grant it more power (as opposed to without), but at what cost - EP draining being even stronger? Limiting strategy for some classes? Etc.

I like the change, but it takes one thing to ruin it completely for everyone. It's a very risky one at that. The cores change was justified very well, and so is passive but it also should be balanced properly and ensure some sort of equality between classes and skills.

Therril Oreb -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:45:12)

A standard way I would balance the classes without means of destroying/regaining Energy would be that they either deal hard damage or they have high defenses or more Health.
I admit I can only look at this from a general point of view seeing how little I know of the details of ED. So don't go mad at me for not understanding you 100% :p

Don't expect this to be perfect yet. After the change, The staff can look at a grander scale how to balance things out. Make sure to give feedback to the staff so that they can work on this!

Striker44 -> RE: November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:46:04)

Once PTA go live , requirements for passive skills will gone and will be more skills points avaible ?

Synner -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 11:55:02)

Omg this update scares me :(

Synner The Passive To Active Thing Scares Me

King FrostLich -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 13:21:20)

This update marks our doom.

martinsen5 -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 13:22:51)

With this update, a lot of re-building will have to be done, don't expect to keep your old build unless you're in crazy luck.

While I love change, I'm still worried BH and BM will be unable to compete with other classes, as they don't regain energy. And as people have mentioned above, energy draining skills will be more powerful than ever and I surely do hope they recieve both a cooldown and a higher cost.

axell5 -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 13:23:02)

lol why doom?

Scyze -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 14:06:38)

@martinsen5,
However, after a Skill has been altered, you get a free retrain.

Trans: Can you add that quote below the design notes post?
-- -- -- -- --

Looking forward on that mage skill, maybe is that battery? or is something else that I forget to read.

Seems Like a Big Update, New Weps, Missions, Balance etc.

charwelly -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 14:46:19)

Awesome Ilove this awesome.

Digital X -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 14:47:43)

It'll be interesting to see how BM and TM's skill differentiates. Can't think off the top of my head HOW it will be different though, what could it possibly be? :o

Scyze -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 14:54:51)

@Digital X,
It will be awesome to see how de-buffs will affect the game for some Classes.
However, I'm the same as you because I want to see how BM and TMs vary between each other.

At least we're going to see new Skills right? And please be kind to the Developers and Testers. They're working so hard for this update coming tomorrow and this update is filled with a bunch of new things.

8x -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 14:55:50)

Mineral Armor and Reroute are my lifeline... T.T

Scyze -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 15:00:55)

@8x,
For me, de-buffs just ruin my day. After a BH has used Smoke Screen on me, I can expect to be hit over 25. Now that's still with Hybrid Armor so I don't know how this will workout for the Mercenary Classes. Hopefully it's alright but for Mercenaries, the buffs are quite low. :/

I guess whoever goes first might have a bigger advantage in winning.

Calogero -> RE: =ED= November 07, 2013 - Shameless Self Indulgence (11/7/2013 15:02:55)

BOY will it be fun to be a Bloodmage, Let's see:
EMP by a CH/BH - Assimilate by a Tech Mage - Atom Smash by a Tact Merc and that OP Whatever it's called by a Merc

near 0 Energy left. Wouldn't be able to use my active cores because no energy
wouldn't be able to get that few extra damage/health regeneration of my passives because, you know no energy.

My retiring becomes easier by the release really...
